00:11 Breast self-checking is a simple way of detecting any irregularities.
00:16 All it takes is four steps and less than a minute.
00:19 And if you're a man, self-checking works for you too.
00:22 Moreover, it's also a good idea to pass it on to your loved ones.
00:27 Step 1. Take a look at your breasts.
00:30 Do this routinely, preferably two or three days after your period.
00:35 Stand upright, shirtless, in front of a mirror.
00:39 And ask yourselves a few questions.
00:42 Are your breasts the same shape and size as usual?
00:45 Do you notice any change in colour or symmetry?
00:48 Any pain, swelling or dimpling?
00:52 Step 2. Feel your breasts.
00:55 Raise one arm and with the opposite hand, firmly palpate your breast, starting from the outside.
01:02 Using your fingers, move over the whole breast in small circles.
01:09 Do you feel lump? A hardening? Is your skin different?
01:14 Step 3. Don't forget the armpits.
01:18 Check that there are no lymph nods under the skin.
01:22 Step 4. The nipple as well.
01:25 Squeeze it gently.
01:27 Is there any abnormal fluid discharge?
01:31 Does the dark circle around the nipple, the areola, look different or retracted?
01:37 All four steps are now complete.
01:40 Now repeat with the other breast.
01:43 Notice anything? Then tell your GP, gynaecologist or midwife straight away.
01:50 The earlier you are screened, the better the treatment.
01:53 However, self-checking is no substitute for a yearly check-up with your gynaecologist or midwife.
02:00 Even less does it replace a mammogram,
02:03 which is the only way of detecting an anomaly that cannot be felt or seen by the naked eye.
02:09 For now, remember these four steps and repeat them regularly so that you get into a routine.
02:15 And be grateful for the time you dedicate to yourself.
