Alex Donno and Larry Blustein discuss the recruitment of JUCO cornerback Sione Laulea and 4-Star WR Ny Carr. Are they future Canes?
Transcript
00:00 We're joined here by the man, the myth, the legend, Larry Blustein.
00:02 So Blue, in a little over a week's time, October 8th, 5pm, Sion Lalea, who is the top junior
00:11 college corner, College of San Mateo in California, he's going to be deciding between the U, USC,
00:18 and Oregon.
00:20 And it seems like it's been a pretty tight recruiting race for him.
00:23 The perceived advantage Miami has is his very good friend and former teammate there at San
00:29 Mateo, Demetrius Freeney, transferred to Miami before this season started.
00:35 So he's already here, hopefully singing the praises of Miami to Sion.
00:39 Where do you think the Hurricanes stand in his recruitment?
00:42 And is this guy the real deal?
00:43 Oh, he's definitely real deal.
00:45 Six-four, 185 pounds, range, he does a lot of really good things, great ball skills.
00:53 You know, I mean, he's a cornerback who's got safety size.
00:58 He's got loose hips.
00:59 He's very fluid.
01:00 Yeah, I mean, the guy's a proven playmaker, tremendous football talent that would be a
01:08 huge asset no matter where he goes.
01:10 Obviously, right now, a lot of people are saying he may be an Oregon lean, but you never
01:15 know.
01:16 Like you said, you get a couple of people in his ear.
01:20 Him being from the West Coast, sometimes that's really tough.
01:25 It's just like a South Florida kid being recruited by USC, but also by Miami and Florida.
01:33 You say to yourself, well, we got advantage because he's from here.
01:37 And that's where a lot of those people out West feel at this point.
01:42 But I think for a number of reasons, one of them being Jamil Adai.
01:48 I mean, he's a guy who is a proven commodity as a teacher, as a coach, as a recruiter.
01:56 And I think he has, I would believe, every edge in the world of getting a kid like that
02:03 because of the fact that, I mean, you could tell a guy because here he is, he's older
02:07 than a lot of the kids that they're bringing in and saying, hey, from day one, you're going
02:12 to have an opportunity to not just compete for playing time, but to be a cornerstone
02:19 for us.
02:20 And a kid likes to hear that, obviously.
02:22 All right.
02:23 So another one that has had Miami Hurricane fans on high alert over the past few days
02:28 is Nycar.
02:29 He's a four-star slot receiver out of Colquitt County, Georgia.
02:34 For a long time, Blue, he was a Georgia verbal commit.
02:38 He decommitted on Sunday.
02:40 By Monday, Miami had a coach at his high school, Cody Woodall, the tight ends coach, that's
02:47 his region of the country.
02:48 He was already there recruiting Carr.
02:51 And there's been a lot of smoke that Miami, and I think Ny even said that Miami are probably
02:57 the leaders right now.
02:59 Don't know exactly when he's going to make his decision, but have you had a chance to
03:03 scout this player?
03:04 What do you think?
03:05 Yeah.
03:06 Difference maker.
03:07 He's a great kid.
03:10 Truly fast, runs great patterns, really gets it.
03:15 He's the guy when you see him catch the ball in space and then run, you say, "Oh, okay."
03:23 Because he's that dude.
03:25 He's the guy that everybody talks about being a difference maker and not just going someplace
03:30 to blend in.
03:32 When you have schools, as you said, like Georgia and Florida State and Miami and Arkansas on
03:38 him, he's special.
03:39 And this is a guy that, as you said, I know that Brian McClendon and Todd Hartley are
03:45 still very much in the picture at Georgia as far as maybe attracting him in the end.
03:52 But I think that Florida State and Miami have made really, really major strides in the fact
03:58 that they're playing well.
04:00 Not that Georgia isn't, but the fact is, the pecking order at Georgia is a whole lot different
04:07 than it is at Miami.
04:10 Just like to me, I talked the other day about if a Brandon Ennis would have made the decision
04:17 to come to Miami instead of Ohio State, I think he'd be right in the mix right now.
04:23 That's one of the things that a lot of people don't understand, that part of the recruiting
04:29 process, Alex, is to understand and kind of project what type of player this kid's going
04:35 to be at the next level.
04:39 All directions point to this kid's going to be a difference maker because of the fact
04:44 that what he does with the ball and his skills and his speed and his quickness and being
04:50 able to outthink defensive backs.
04:52 So, yeah, he joins Miami and that's just another feather in a cap that's really stacked with
04:58 some really, really good football players for the future.
