00:00 Do Tatum and Brown have the killer instinct?
00:03 I have yet to see it, Jeff.
00:04 - You know, not the way you want to see it.
00:09 Okay, so it's a little different, right?
00:11 I mean, these guys are cool.
00:13 They just are.
00:15 I talked to Tatum about this at length
00:17 and he said, like, I'm not changing.
00:18 That's not, he might get a little bit with confidence.
00:23 He might feel a little bit more comfortable
00:25 in his own skin to show emotion, right?
00:27 He did it last year.
00:28 If you remember, I forget if it was a Miami series
00:32 or earlier in the playoffs,
00:34 but right away he dunked, yelled,
00:38 got called for a technical and I loved it.
00:42 I actually loved it.
00:43 I thought it was the best thing that could have happened
00:44 because I think that gets the team going.
00:47 - The Ryan Goodman and Tangway podcast
00:49 is brought to you by FanDuel,
00:51 the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNX Media Network.
00:56 - Hey there, everybody, it's that time again.
00:58 Time for the Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman, Tangway,
01:01 Along for the Ride podcast.
01:02 We have a special edition today.

01:18 Get $200 in bonus bets guaranteed
01:21 when you place a $5 bet.
01:24 Through the email chain, we are having a tough time
01:26 coming up with something worthy to talk about.
01:28 So we're gonna put our two esteemed experts,
01:31 excuse me, on the spot.
01:36 We're gonna kick things off.
01:37 We're gonna do a little, we're gonna do games.
01:39 We're gonna do some games today.
01:41 So Bob Ryan, I'm gonna start,
01:43 I'm gonna ask you to go first on this one.
01:45 Name association, gentlemen.
01:47 What is your first thought of the 2023 Boston Celtics?
01:52 (silence)
01:54 Curiosity item, curiosity for me.
01:59 And it all, it starts with how Joe Mazzola
02:05 plans to employ his new toy, his seven foot three
02:09 Latvian toy.
02:11 And that's sort of what Porzingis is.
02:13 He's such a embodiment of the new era
02:16 of what big men are all about, stretching the floor
02:20 rather than kicking ass down low.
02:23 Yet he had proved last year he can kick some ass down low.
02:26 And in my judgment, you shouldn't forget
02:29 that he's seven three.
02:30 And I understand he can make threes and that's fine at times.
02:33 But so that's my number one question,
02:36 is how Joe Mazzola will employ Porzingis.
02:41 So curiosity, I guess would be the word.
02:43 - Jeff Goodman.
02:44 - Probably health for me.
02:47 Again, Porzingis and Brogdon being the leaders of that,
02:52 Hordford being older, Robert Williams always being an issue.
02:56 I think there's plenty of health concerns with this team
02:59 going into the season.
03:00 And generally speaking,
03:03 the teams that go deep in the playoffs
03:07 are the healthy ones.
03:08 'Cause there's not a lot of difference talent-wise
03:10 between a lot of these top tier teams.
03:13 That's why I am a long time disinterested party
03:18 in predictions, because you gotta tell me
03:20 who's gonna be ready to go in May
03:22 that is ready to go now.
03:23 And we don't have that answer.
03:25 And so, show me, I agree with you.
03:28 That's certainly very important.
03:31 - Okay, what comes to mind for me,
03:32 and I'll ask both of you to comment on this,
03:34 is they lack a killer instinct.
03:36 When I look at this team,
03:37 and don't tell me about Marcus Smart,
03:39 because I don't think Marcus Smart was that killer instinct.
03:41 Marcus Smart had the killer instinct,
03:43 but he couldn't make clutch threes.
03:45 So my concern right now
03:46 is while they have invested in Brown,
03:48 they have Tatum, we know about the potential.
03:51 We've heard that word a long time.
03:53 Whenever they've been faced with adversity,
03:54 Jeff Goodman, I'll start with you,
03:56 they have not come up.
03:57 Do they have the killer instinct?
03:59 We've seen the guy in Miami, he has it.
04:01 Durant has it.
04:02 LeBron has had it, and then at times he hasn't had it.
04:05 Bird, Magic, all the greats did.
04:06 Do Tatum and Brown have the killer instinct?
04:10 I have yet to see it, Jeff.
04:12 - You know, not the way you wanna see it, okay?
04:16 So it's a little different, right?
04:19 I mean, these guys are cool.
04:20 They just are.
04:22 I talked to Tatum about this at length,
04:24 and he said, like, "I'm not changing."
04:26 That's not, he might get a little bit, with confidence,
04:30 he might feel a little bit more comfortable
04:32 in his own skin to show emotion, right?
04:34 He did it last year, if you remember,
04:36 forget if it was a Miami series,
04:39 or earlier in the playoffs,
04:42 but right away, he dunked, yelled,
04:46 got called for a technical, and I loved it.
04:49 I actually loved it.
04:50 I thought it was the best thing that could've happened,
04:52 because I think that gets the team going.
04:54 What I worry about, Gary, is the other guys on this team,
04:58 that you at least had a Marcus Smart,
05:00 you had a Grant Williams who wouldn't shut up.
05:03 This team needs a P.J. Tucker type.
05:05 They don't have it up and down the roster.
05:08 So it's not just Tatum and Brown,
05:10 it's more the guy that can get Tatum and Brown going.
05:13 Who is that gonna be?
05:14 Because I don't see it anywhere up and down this roster.
05:17 - Right, I won't argue with it.
05:21 I was thinking, Fenny, I was thinking
05:22 while you were speaking, what about the Warriors?
05:25 And then I thought, oh yeah, they have Draymond.
05:27 'Cause I was gonna say,
05:28 Curry's not that kind of guy, really.
05:30 He's kind of the epitome of cool,
05:31 and Clay's not that kind of guy,
05:33 but Draymond surely is, so yeah, they had that guy.
05:36 They had to, and have, he's still there.
05:39 They have that guy.
05:40 - I'm not talking about necessarily an exterior behavior.
05:43 What I'm talking about is in the last few years,
05:45 the Celtics have underachieved.
05:47 They were in the NBA Finals, they lost to the Warriors.
05:49 When Steph did step up late in the series,
05:51 Tatum had a hurt shoulder, he didn't.
05:54 My point is, the greats play hurt.
05:58 Again, it's Jordan, but that's the only example
06:00 I could think of.
06:01 104, 105 degree temperature, whatever.
06:03 - Nobody's Jordan, all right?
06:04 Nobody's Jordan.
06:05 - I don't know, but my point is, is that,
06:07 I don't care about yelling, I don't care about dunking,
06:11 I care about gut checks.
06:13 - Tatum played through it.
06:14 Listen, he didn't come off the court.
06:16 - He did, but they didn't win, and he didn't play well.
06:17 I guess my point is, where's the gut check?
06:18 - Of course he didn't, he couldn't move.
06:20 He couldn't move in that game.
06:22 - Did they underachieve last year?
06:23 Did they underachieve last year?
06:25 - Yeah, I don't think two years ago
06:26 they necessarily underachieved.
06:28 By getting to the NBA Finals,
06:29 with where that team started the season,
06:32 you'd have a hard time convincing me
06:34 they underachieved two years ago.
06:36 They lost to Golden State in the finals
06:39 when nobody thought in hell that they would get there
06:42 if you would ask anybody at the All-Star break.
06:44 - That's fair, that's fair.
06:46 But I do wonder about their killer instinct.
06:48 - Sure, that's fair.
06:49 - And it's not that, it's like,
06:51 games on the line, gotta have it.
06:55 Game seven, NBA Finals, got to have it.
06:59 We shall see.
07:00 Okay, Bob, I'll start with you on this one.
07:01 Bob Ryan, chemistry experience.
07:04 How did you do in chemistry, Bob, at Lawrenceville?
07:06 - Barbarally.
07:07 I would go to my grave believing that Jack Devlin,
07:12 my chemistry teacher in Lawrenceville's fifth form,
07:18 my last senior year,
07:20 was not going to allow Mary Ryan's son
07:22 to fail to graduate from Lawrenceville.
07:25 And there gave me a gentleman's,
07:26 60 was passing at Lawrenceville.
07:29 He gave me a 62.
07:31 - Wow.
07:32 - 60 or 61.
07:34 I will always believe that he was not going to allow
07:38 Mary Ryan, who was the secretary to the headmaster
07:40 of the school, my mom, her son, to fail to graduate.
07:45 Giving all the wonderful things he'd achieved
07:47 during his five years at Lawrenceville.
07:49 So there's your answer.
07:52 - We need that transcript, Gary.
07:54 Gary, we need to find that transcript.
07:56 - I suck at math and science.
07:58 Anything that had to do with that side of the brain,
08:01 forget about it.
08:02 - And so doesn't every other writer.
08:04 So, Bob Bryant, chemistry experiment.
08:07 Which one goes boom?
08:09 The new look warriors or the new look Phoenix Suns?
08:14 Which one explodes in the lab?
08:16 - I don't think it's a given that it has to happen that way.
08:22 I trust the warriors overall.
08:24 I trust their culture that they developed
08:27 over the last several years.
08:29 So that they will absorb their new guy just fine.
08:34 And so I don't think it'll be them.
08:36 If anybody's going to do it,
08:38 if by process of elimination,
08:40 be the Suns in this line of thinking.
08:43 'Cause I implicitly trust the warriors
08:45 to get as much out of what they've got as they can,
08:50 whatever that's gonna be.
08:52 And they're old, no question.
08:54 And this is gonna be,
08:55 they're the 69 Celtics in the making.
08:57 That's what they are.
08:59 And so by that answer,
09:02 the answer would be more likely Suns,
09:04 but I don't think it's likely either way.

09:43 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
09:46 - I'm gonna go Golden State.
09:52 I just feel like, look at Chris Paul's track record.
09:55 - Is that a fit?
09:56 - I wonder, Jeff, I gotta wonder.
09:58 - He's always hurt.
09:59 He's super vocal.
10:02 And I wonder if that'll rub these guys like, honestly.
10:05 I could see Draymond and him getting into it.
10:08 I could, absolutely.
10:09 'Cause Chris Paul, he'll say,
10:11 you know, he comes with kind of,
10:15 you know, a little bit of an air of arrogance.
10:18 Draymond's not gonna take that shit.
10:19 That's his team.
10:20 He's been there.
10:22 What's Chris Paul won?
10:23 Nothing.
10:25 I kind of like the Suns.
10:29 Again, I'm a big Booker fan.
10:31 KD's KD.
10:33 I mean, man, if he's healthy,
10:35 he's still top three player in the world, in my opinion.
10:39 You add Bradley Beal, who I just,
10:42 you guys know where I stand on Bradley Beal.
10:45 As long as he's healthy, is a third guy.
10:48 I mean, Bradley Beal is their third best player right now.
10:52 Third best player.
10:53 Now again, do they have a bench?
10:55 I don't know.
10:55 But I feel like, you know,
10:58 these guys like have something to prove.
11:01 They're not as old, you know.
11:04 They're not as old.
11:05 Bradley Beal's still in his prime.
11:07 You know, the one who's obviously older is KD.
11:11 But I think when you look at Golden State,
11:13 they're older.
11:14 They're older, all those guys.
11:15 And I just think,
11:16 I can't wait to see the Draymond, Chris Paul.
11:19 That part of it is gonna be fascinating to me.
11:22 I don't think Draymond will punch Chris Paul
11:25 like he did his former teammate,
11:28 who is now gone, Jordan Poole.
11:30 But I think there could be some fireworks there.
11:33 - Do you think there's any remote possibility
11:35 that Chris Paul will humble himself
11:38 in this new atmosphere with these proven winners?
11:41 - He should.
11:43 - I mean, yeah, he should.
11:44 - But hard to change.
11:45 I always say that.
11:46 - I always, he's 38.
11:48 I mean, you talk about leopard changing spots here.
11:50 It's what you're doing.
11:51 And I'm just throwing it out there.
11:53 You're making a lot of sense.
11:54 I'm kind of being really, maybe very terminally naive here
11:59 and thinking that he can change at this point
12:00 and fit and absorb this new culture
12:03 and, you know, fit in, quote unquote, rather than.
12:06 - On paper, I like the Warriors better than,
12:10 I still like the Warriors, but boy,
12:12 when I saw Paul go to the Warriors,
12:14 I just went, man, that is a square peg in a round hole.
12:18 I don't know.
12:19 - And I think Beal, and I think,
12:21 I would think, Bob, that Beal is so happy
12:25 to be out of Washington.
12:26 - You think?
12:27 - I mean, Jeff probably knows better than us,
12:29 but you know, that when he goes to Phoenix,
12:31 he's like, I don't care, dudes.
12:32 You know, I'll drive the team bus, whatever.
12:36 So it's gonna be interesting to watch that Golden State.
12:39 - That's gotta be, the West has got some fascinating stories.
12:42 No question.
12:43 - Oh, it's awesome.
12:43 - No question.
12:45 - Aiton is your fourth best player now in Phoenix.
12:47 Like, they don't know a lot.
12:48 - They don't know a lot about DeAndre Aiton.
12:49 Now, he may be upset that he doesn't get the ball enough,
12:51 but let's face it, he is gonna be wide open.
12:55 He runs the court like he's gonna get the basketball.
12:59 So I like Phoenix.
13:01 I think, you know, their role players,
13:03 they're gonna determine a lot for them,
13:05 but man, their big three, three and a half,
13:07 if you include Aiton,
13:08 they're, again, other than,
13:11 Kevin Durant has to stay healthy, period.
13:13 If he doesn't, obviously we know.
13:15 But to me, Beal and Booker is just such a superstar.
13:20 - I love my mom.
13:22 I've been a Booker fan.
13:22 - They got guys who can just go get theirs.
13:24 They got three guys you can give the ball to
13:26 and they can all go get theirs.
13:29 Golden State, you still have one dude
13:31 that can go get his, right?
13:33 Like, let's be honest.
13:34 Chris Paul was never that guy, pick and roll guy,
13:38 elite pick and roll guy,
13:39 but he's worn down and Draymond can't score.
13:44 And Clay's not the Clay of old.
13:46 Now, some days he's the Clay of old, but not consistently.
13:49 So it's still, Steph is your dude and he's getting older.
13:53 - Yeah.
13:56 - Well, you know, I paid my dues,
13:58 annual dues on the Booker fan club, so I'm all paid up.
14:01 I'm there with you on that one.
14:03 - Let's go student pupil, Jeff Goodman.
14:07 What comes to mind?
14:07 Chauncey Billups, Damian Lillard in Portland.
14:10 - What comes to mind is, is it gonna happen again?
14:14 I mean, I just don't know.
14:16 I would think that Damian Lillard
14:17 is not playing in Portland.
14:20 If he is playing, he's not playing there for long.
14:22 You know, maybe they just, again, if you're Portland,
14:26 you run him out there, you talk to him a little bit,
14:27 "Hey, you know what?
14:29 "Just be good, let's start the season."
14:31 And then maybe some other things will open up.
14:34 I don't know if Lillard will be open to that or not.
14:37 I just don't see him in a Portland uniform.
14:40 And for me, it's get as much as you can
14:42 if you're the Trailblazers, try to get something proven,
14:46 because they've already got enough young players.
14:48 And then on the flip side, if it's Miami,
14:51 man, like Jimmy Butler and Damian Lillard,
14:54 those are two tough, tough hombres.
14:57 - Well, they are, and those guys know how to win.
14:59 Well, at least we've seen it with Butler.
15:00 I don't think Lillard has a supporting cast.
15:02 Your thoughts on the great Northwest, Bob Wright?
15:05 - Well, this is the thing we've been waiting for,
15:07 waiting for, I can't believe that the season ends
15:11 and he's in that uniform, that they're gonna have to,
15:16 they're gonna have to give in to the reality
15:18 of his unhappiness and do something.
15:23 Whether they'll get 50, 60, 80 cents on the dollar,
15:28 whatever they're gonna get, I don't know.
15:29 But it's not, it just isn't gonna work any longer there.
15:34 - Okay, let's go to the wildcard round.
15:36 Final topic in this section of the show,
15:40 spin the wheel, the name comes up, tick, tick, tick, tick,
15:43 tick, Bob Ryan, what comes to mind, Donovan Mitchell?
15:46 - Well, prime of life player now, you know?
15:53 I mean, a top, I don't know, fill in the blank,
15:56 what, 15, 20, at least, I guess, player in the NBA.
15:59 Now, what can I say, a fine player.
16:05 - Well, I think, well, I guess what I thought is,
16:08 everybody's gone West, I'm glad he's in the East.
16:11 - Yeah, well, the West is more intriguing,
16:14 should we say, this year.
16:15 - Well, it is, but here you had Cleveland
16:17 with a fast start last year.
16:19 Will they be able to sustain it this year?
16:21 - Yeah, that's a very good question,
16:22 'cause at one point in the season,
16:24 they looked like they were really gonna be a threat
16:26 in the East, and it, you know, it,
16:29 furthered away, it didn't happen.
16:33 You know, the thing about him is funny.
16:36 I didn't realize how his size,
16:39 I was confused about how big he really was.
16:43 But anyway, you know, it's, he's a nice player.
16:48 I mean, he's not, you know, what can I say,
16:50 he's a very important player to them, and a nice player.
16:54 - Do you think he's a better than a nice player, though, Jeff?
16:55 I think he's better.
16:57 - I'll pick up on what Bob said,
16:58 and I think this is what he's trying to say
17:00 without saying it.
17:01 Can he be the number one guy to lead a team,
17:05 like, deep in, like, to the finals, right?
17:08 Is he that?
17:09 Is he a top 15-ish player, which is an all-star,
17:14 or is he a dude?
17:15 Is he a guy that can carry a really nice,
17:17 young Cleveland team, by the way?
17:19 Really nice.
17:20 Like, Evan Mobley, Darius Scott,
17:22 like, they got some good players in that Cleveland team.
17:25 And they've made a, like, they're relevant,
17:28 but they're not, like, a threat.
17:31 That's what Cleveland's become, so.
17:33 - And they're a 48-34, 50-32 best, you know, team,
17:38 which is, that's a nice team.
17:40 Yeah, yeah, no, the answer to your question,
17:42 I say, no, I gotta be proving that he's that kind of guy.
17:46 That's why I say he's a guy,
17:47 expect to see him in the all-star game,
17:49 and that's a certain level of achievement in this league.
17:53 But I'm not gonna go any further than that right now.
17:56 - And will he stay in Cleveland?
17:58 That's the other big thing, Gary.
17:59 Will he stay after his contract's up?
18:01 My gut says no.
18:02 - Gee, how many times are we gonna pose that question
18:05 for how many guys, right?
18:06 - In Cleveland, I know.
18:08 Okay, time for either or, ladies and gentlemen.
18:11 Bob, I'll start with you.
18:12 Either or, you can't root for the Celtics.
18:16 Either or, Knicks or Lakers?
18:19 - Knicks, for me, because I think it's better,
18:24 it's great for the league to have the Knicks
18:26 as the ultimate polarizer, ultimate.
18:31 And people love New York, hate New York.
18:33 And I think it's a much more vibrant and exciting league
18:38 if the Knicks are good and in the mix,
18:40 and they could be good.
18:42 They have a shot.
18:43 They could be good.
18:44 And so I'd say, for me, Knicks.
18:48 But that may be an East Coast bias,
18:50 or a growing up 60 miles southwest of New York bias,
18:55 but that's my stance.
18:56 - I mean, for me, it's the Lakers, 'cause of LeBron.
19:00 I don't know how many more of these
19:01 we're gonna get for LeBron.
19:03 So I just, I wanna see LeBron one more time.
19:06 Like, man, how much fun would it be
19:09 to have LeBron come to Boston
19:12 in the NBA Finals this year?
19:13 One last time.
19:14 This would be it, right?
19:17 Like, come on, Bob.
19:18 Do you want- - We could have,
19:19 we could have back to back.
19:21 We could have the Knicks followed by the Lakers,
19:23 theoretically. - We could.
19:24 That's true.
19:25 That's very true. - And, you know,
19:26 I can't let go of the atmosphere in both buildings,
19:31 and when the Knicks had the great teams from '69 to '74,
19:34 from the games that we had with those guys,
19:37 and the atmosphere in the garden,
19:38 because of the college kids in New York
19:40 that would get put up one fourth of the building,
19:42 you know, and it was like a college game.
19:44 It's college atmosphere.
19:45 It's different than any other atmosphere
19:48 that I've experienced in the 55 years
19:50 since I started covering the Celtics.
19:52 - Really? - '69.
19:53 - Really?
19:54 - Yeah, Philly was one.
19:55 LA was different, but because of this,
19:57 now, you wouldn't have that today
19:59 because we have more seats and ticket holders.
20:00 Those days, you know, the Celtics were averaging,
20:03 you know, 10,000, they weren't even averaging 10,000.
20:06 So people would buy, these kids could buy up the tickets.
20:09 And I'm telling you, it was wonderful.
20:11 Anyway, we're never gonna see that again,
20:14 but I think we could have an interesting, you know,
20:18 atmosphere if the Knicks were good
20:20 and it really meant something.
20:22 - All right, Jeff, we'll start with you on this one,
20:24 'cause I know where Bob's gonna go
20:25 and I'll let him bounce off of you here.
20:28 Either or, Jabbar or Walton.
20:31 - No, I mean, you gotta go Jabbar,
20:35 but like, they're so different in their personalities
20:39 and how they did it, you know, on the court and off the court.
20:43 So Jabbar was obviously the better player,
20:45 but I would say this, like,
20:47 what if Bill Walton had stayed healthy?
20:50 - Oh.
20:50 - And his personality and his passing,
20:53 and Jabbar was just such an elite scorer.
20:56 Bill Walton, like, the passing, the personality,
21:01 the ability to kind of, again, like, just, you know,
21:06 look at what he did for the locker room
21:07 in Boston when he got there.
21:08 So, but Jabbar clearly was the better player.
21:11 - I mean, Walter took ham and eggers
21:12 and they won the NBA finals.
21:14 I mean, God bless what, Bobby Gross,
21:17 and Dave Kworczyk.
21:19 - Dave Kworczyk.
21:20 - And Lucas.
21:22 - Like, come on.
21:23 - What if there was an app that used AI
21:26 and machine learning to suggest smart sports bets?
21:29 Well, there is.
21:31 It's called OddsR.
21:32 It's the mobile app you need to know

22:34 We call that a winning bet.
22:35 - You know where I feel.
22:38 Okay, first of all, obviously, Kareem's career
22:40 is the greatest career in basketball
22:43 in the history of the sport.
22:45 When you think of colleagues' high school achievement,
22:48 collegiate achievement, and NBA achievement,
22:52 he's the greatest all-around achiever
22:54 in the history of the sport.
22:56 Nobody can come close to the full deal than him.
23:01 He lost, like, starting with his junior year in high school,
23:05 going through his three varsity years at UCLA,
23:08 I don't think he lost more than four games.
23:11 So, you know, seriously.
23:13 - No, I know, I know.
23:14 - His career is, I'm quite,
23:16 my feeling of Bill Walton is that
23:18 he's the most important player who ever laced up a sneaker
23:20 in terms of his ability to influence the game
23:23 at both ends of the floor.
23:25 And if I were, you know,
23:26 and I'll say it for the trillionth time,
23:29 if Earth were in a debt struggle with a foreign invader,
23:33 and there was a one-game winner-take-all basketball game
23:38 in which the loser would go into servitude for all eternity,
23:41 the first pick of any player
23:42 who has ever laced up a sneaker for me,
23:44 for the Earth team, would be Bill Walton at his best.
23:47 A healthy Bill Walton would be my first pick
23:49 of any player who's ever played the game.
23:51 I'm out there on this.
23:53 I don't think I have a whole lot of company in this,
23:55 but that's what I believe.
23:57 But short run, Bill Walton,
23:58 long run, of course, many others.
24:00 - Well, and the aliens would think Bill Walton was an alien.
24:04 Okay, I want to, we got two more here.
24:06 I want to throw in something that Jeff
24:08 wanted to talk about.
24:09 Malcolm Brogdon, Jeff, or Buddy Hill?
24:13 'Cause there's trade rumors.
24:14 - Yeah, yeah.
24:15 And I don't even know if the numbers,
24:17 I haven't looked at the numbers yet, contract-wise,
24:21 but obviously Buddy Hill,
24:23 it looks like he's going to be on his way out of Indiana.
24:26 Malcolm Brogdon is supposedly a little bit disgruntled
24:32 with everything.
24:34 Like, listen, again, you know, they tried to trade him.
24:38 He's got this, you know, wrist injury
24:41 that we haven't heard word one from him.
24:43 I mean, that's the most unbelievable thing.
24:46 Since everything happened with him
24:49 potentially going to the Clippers,
24:50 and then the Clippers bailed
24:52 'cause they didn't have enough info on the wrist injury,
24:54 not one word from Malcolm Brogdon,
24:56 which surprises me, but it doesn't,
24:58 'cause Malcolm Brogdon is super private
25:01 and not about attention and any of that stuff.
25:03 Would I do it?
25:06 Boy, I mean, listen, I'll say this.
25:10 Buddy Hill can shoot the hell out of the basketball.
25:13 They're completely different players,
25:14 and I don't know if Indiana would want
25:16 Malcolm Brogdon back anyway.
25:18 Like, I'm not sure they'd even want him back.
25:20 - But I mean, look, since it's either or, who you taking?
25:23 - Ah, boy, boy.
25:26 I don't know.
25:29 I don't know on this one.
25:31 - Yeah, pick one.
25:32 Come on, pick one.
25:33 It's not, come on, man, it's a game show.
25:35 - All right, I would stick with Brogdon,
25:37 I think, if his health is okay,
25:39 because I think you have enough,
25:43 you added Porzingis as another shooter.
25:46 I think I'd be very, very worried
25:48 that you wouldn't have another guy
25:50 that can really play the point,
25:51 other than Peyton Pritchard,
25:52 if Derek White gets hurt or isn't as good
25:55 as we think is the full-time point guard.
25:57 How's that?
25:57 - There you go, Bob?
25:58 - This intrigues me.
26:01 I certainly didn't wake up thinking
26:03 I'd be discussing Freddie Heald at all,
26:06 but I'm excited about adding another shooter.
26:11 I think Jeff has summed up the worries
26:14 that we might have about where Malcolm Brogdon,
26:17 what his state of mind,
26:18 and what is the deal with this injury,
26:21 which was very mysterious at the time,
26:24 and which obviously was enough to scare the Clippers away.
26:28 So I'd roll that dice, if theoretically possible.
26:33 Also, I totally agree, we don't have any idea
26:36 that Indiana would want him back,
26:37 but I would roll that dice,
26:39 'cause I, and this is where,
26:42 talk about Bob, get a grip.
26:45 I'm such a Pritchard fan and believer
26:47 that there's a place for him in this league,
26:49 and I like it to be here.
26:51 And we always worry about injury, of course,
26:54 but I would be happy to, I'd make that deal,
26:58 and Pritchard would be my third guard, and so be it.
27:01 So yeah, I'd make that deal.
27:03 - Bonner, where's the salary part?
27:05 - Gary, the salary part, I just looked up.
27:08 Heald has an expiring contract after this year
27:10 of like 19 and a half million this year.
27:13 Brogdon's got two years, he's got this year
27:15 and one more at about 22, 22 and a half million.
27:18 So that would be the other benefit, I guess,
27:20 if you're the Celtics.
27:22 You'd have an expiring contract after this year of Heald,
27:25 and Heald can shoot the hell out of the ball.
27:26 He can do that.
27:28 - All right, so final one here, guys,
27:30 and this may be an obvious one,
27:31 but you never know what's gonna happen here
27:33 with the Bob Ryan, Jeff Govind,
27:34 and Tangrier Long for the Right Pot.
27:36 Bob Ryan, we'll start with you.
27:37 Pippen or Worthy?
27:39 - Ah, I think there's a danger,
27:46 I know I've been guilty of it at times,
27:48 is a danger in downplaying Scottie Pippen's actual value,
27:52 because I don't know, he's not like,
27:54 to me, he's not typically likable,
27:56 but boy, he was good, and he was a perfect Batman,
28:01 a Robin for Batman of those years.
28:04 And his two-way capability was good.
28:09 Worthy, Worthy's wonderful, but Pippen, I go with Pippen.
28:14 - Oh, really?
28:15 Okay, all right, I'm kind of surprised about that.
28:17 - Yeah, well, maybe I'm trying to make up,
28:21 I don't know, I'm trying to overreact here,
28:23 but I'll go with Pippen.
28:24 - Me too, me too, for the defense.
28:27 That's why, to me, that's the difference in the two.
28:32 Like, Worthy was better.
28:34 I think Worthy was a better offensive player,
28:36 but I think Pippen was such a good defender
28:39 that I would give him the edge, even though he's,
28:41 yes, he's not nearly as likable as James Worthy.
28:44 And oh, by the way, the first interview I ever did,
28:47 James Worthy, when I was about 14 years old,
28:50 and my voice hadn't even changed,
28:53 agreed to do an interview with me.
28:55 So I'll never, so it's hard for me
28:58 to go against James Worthy here,
29:00 'cause, I mean, again, what a good dude to him.
29:03 - He's a great dude, I know the chance.
29:04 I met him with Max once, he's a great guy.
29:06 - When people, when the subject of the late-line bias
29:10 comes up, the guy that I always say
29:12 I think he would have been at the level,
29:14 the perennial all-star, but not just shy
29:17 of the Magic Michael Larry level,
29:19 LeBron level, Durant level, is Worthy.
29:23 I think bias could have been the Worthy of his time.
29:27 - Guys, great job.
29:28 I guess that was a decent question, Gare.
29:30 - Yeah, that was very good, thank you.
29:31 - That was, pat myself on the back.
