00:00:51 because that is a sin and we will go to heck.
00:00:54 Now let's watch the movie.
00:00:56 (gunshots)
00:00:59 - When we jeer at the devil and tell ourselves
00:01:07 that he does not exist, that is when he is happiest.
00:01:10 Oh!
00:01:11 - Oh, I love Father Gabriel Amorth.
00:01:14 - Hands out well considering I'm a Satanist.
00:01:16 - Sick, '80s, best decade ever.
00:01:21 (speaking in foreign language)
00:01:26 - I feel it.
00:01:27 - They're gonna sacrifice the pig?
00:01:29 They're gonna kill the pig?
00:01:30 (speaking in foreign language)
00:01:34 - Oh my God. - The devil's tongue.
00:01:39 (speaking in foreign language)
00:01:43 - He's a smart priest.
00:01:48 If it was me, I would have been like,
00:01:49 definitely the devil.
00:01:51 - There's no other possible explanation in the 1980s.
00:01:55 - Question, stop now.
00:01:56 (speaking in foreign language)
00:02:00 - Oh my God, they are gonna sacrifice.
00:02:02 - Oh, they're gonna transfer it to the pig.
00:02:04 - Yeah, let's go drag me to hell.
00:02:06 A boy possession, how quaint.
00:02:13 - I've been watching so much English television.
00:02:19 - This programming is trash.
00:02:23 (speaking in foreign language)
00:02:25 - You doubt me?
00:02:26 (speaking in foreign language)
00:02:30 - Yeah, it doesn't have to be Satan.
00:02:32 (speaking in foreign language)
00:02:33 - He could have read Dante's Inferno.
00:02:35 - You will find out soon enough.
00:02:38 (speaking in foreign language)
00:02:41 - You mock me?
00:02:42 - Is that Jonathan Tucker?
00:02:44 - I can possess anyone I choose.
00:02:49 (speaking in foreign language)
00:02:53 - Anyone, anything.
00:02:55 - It's refreshing to see Russell Crowe with this.
00:02:58 Just add that extra zest.
00:03:00 - You have the power, could you possess the pig?
00:03:03 - Yes, I can.
00:03:04 - Come on Satan, possess the pig.
00:03:06 - Egg on Satan.
00:03:07 - Whoa.
00:03:09 - What's gonna happen to this pig?
00:03:14 (groaning)
00:03:18 - Poor piggy.
00:03:20 - Satan's bacon.
00:03:21 - You can sleep now my son, the demon is gone.
00:03:25 - Wow, he handles these exorcisms with such ease.
00:03:30 - Yeah, I would love to be exorcised by this guy.
00:03:33 - I know. - He's so comforted.
00:03:34 - I feel like I got this under control when he's around.
00:03:37 - Oh shit.
00:03:43 - Is that Alex Esso?
00:03:44 - That is Alex Esso, damn.
00:03:46 - I did not know she was in this.
00:03:47 - Nope.
00:03:48 - I'll take this movie more serious now.
00:03:49 - She's becoming a Netflix queen.
00:03:51 - All those Mike Flanagan shows and now this.
00:03:54 - Scream queen.
00:03:54 - True scream queen over here.
00:03:57 - Oh nothing bad's gonna happen.
00:04:03 - Ain't nothing bad gonna happen here today kids.
00:04:06 - That's right.
00:04:07 - Father Esquivel.
00:04:10 - Pleasure to meet you, Miss Vazquez.
00:04:12 Welcome you and your family to the diocese.
00:04:14 - Oh no, no, please go for it.
00:04:16 - Give him a Bible.
00:04:17 - Haley Steinfeld and Finn Wolfhard
00:04:19 are gonna be in a heap ton of trouble.
00:04:20 - Yeah.
00:04:21 - So cool to see Ralph Macchio playing a priest.
00:04:30 - I know.
00:04:30 - You just wanna get in trouble.
00:04:41 - They're setting the stage here.
00:04:43 Chandelier's gonna come back.
00:04:50 - I guess in post production they were like,
00:04:51 just make everything look icky.
00:04:53 - Yeah.
00:04:54 - You got some like icky tint.
00:04:55 - Make this look like it's rotting.
00:04:57 - Uh oh.
00:05:00 - The black phone.
00:05:01 - It's like a rabbit from Donnie Darko.
00:05:08 - How is he so high up there before?
00:05:10 - No idea.
00:05:11 - We're 14 minutes in and I'm feeling like
00:05:15 a lot of this is a rejected screenplay
00:05:17 out of the Conjuring universe.
00:05:18 - Yeah.
00:05:20 - This was one of the scripts that could've been the nun.
00:05:23 - See through to France where the naked ladies dance.
00:05:33 - Oh awesome, gold mine.
00:05:40 - Ark of the Covenant.
00:05:42 - We don't have an income anymore.
00:05:44 Once we fix it up and sell it, we'll go home.
00:05:46 If you could just at least watch your brother,
00:05:48 maybe try and get him to talk.
00:05:49 - Bring him up from the catacombs.
00:05:51 - Please just keep an eye on your brother.
00:05:53 - We don't care a lot.
00:05:57 - I do respect the fact that they kept this R-rated though.
00:05:59 - Yeah.
00:06:00 - Helps.
00:06:01 - The boy was maladjusted to temporary mental illness.
00:06:04 I use primitive psychology, the power of suggestion.
00:06:08 - So you just kill the animal?
00:06:11 - Yeah, gotta really take this basic psychology that far.
00:06:15 - 98% of the cases that are assigned to Father Amorth
00:06:19 are then further recommended by him
00:06:22 to doctors and psychiatrists.
00:06:25 - The other 2%.
00:06:25 This is something that has confounded all of science
00:06:30 and all of medicine for a very long time.
00:06:32 - That's my department.
00:06:33 - I call it evil.
00:06:37 - Copyright that word.
00:06:41 - How did he manage to pull off
00:06:43 making the most badass person?
00:06:45 (laughing)
00:06:47 - You are not a doctor, but these practices of yours
00:06:50 could have damaging effects on these people.
00:06:52 - You're a real overachiever, ain't you?
00:06:54 - But I am a theologian, I am a lawyer,
00:06:56 I am a journalist, and I am a practical man.
00:06:59 I was also a partisan in the war,
00:07:01 so I know a firing squad when I see one.
00:07:04 - He's a really cool character.
00:07:06 - Position of chief exorcist be formally vacated.
00:07:10 - So what you are saying is that evil does not exist?
00:07:13 - The church is under constant pressure
00:07:15 to sharpen her relevance.
00:07:16 - Numbers are down.
00:07:18 - If evil does not exist,
00:07:20 what then is the role of the church?
00:07:22 - We need Satan.
00:07:24 - We have more questions for you, Father Amorte.
00:07:27 - There's been like 47 shots in this one scene.
00:07:29 - I know.
00:07:30 - Gotta make sure we get all this room on camera, boy.
00:07:33 It costs a lot.
00:07:34 - He just does not stop cutting.
00:07:36 - My position was appointed by my bishop.
00:07:39 My diocese is wrong.
00:07:41 My local bishop is the pope.
00:07:42 If you have a problem with me.
00:07:44 - Oh, so great, they got him.
00:07:45 - You talk to my boss.
00:07:47 - The pope is in fire.
00:07:49 - Father Amorte, you have not been dismissed.
00:07:51 - Cuckoo.
00:07:51 (laughing)
00:07:53 - He's going rogue.
00:07:54 - I think Rosalio Crowe brings so much to elevate this.
00:07:57 - Oh yeah.
00:07:58 - He brings so much.
00:07:59 - He was like, what's a project
00:08:00 that I can just put all the way on my back?
00:08:02 (laughing)
00:08:03 - He's so good.
00:08:04 - Do another one of my Mediterranean accents.
00:08:06 - It's like we're barely into the movie.
00:08:08 I'm like, this would just not be the same without him.
00:08:11 (crunching)
00:08:13 - Whoa!
00:08:17 (explosion)
00:08:19 - Jeez.
00:08:22 - Oh my God.
00:08:22 - Ha, crisped him up.
00:08:24 - Wow, this movie is.
00:08:26 - It's in no rush at all.
00:08:27 - Nope.
00:08:28 (laughing)
00:08:29 - I really wish it would pick up the pace.
00:08:32 - Get bored.
00:08:33 - Henry!
00:08:35 Mom!
00:08:37 - Oh, now you care about Henry.
00:08:38 - Henry!
00:08:40 - Talk to me.
00:08:41 He's talking.
00:08:43 - You're all going to die.
00:08:46 - No way.
00:08:46 (screaming)
00:08:47 - It's exactly, oh my God, is he clawing his face.
00:08:50 - This movie is just like an entertaining rock and roll hits
00:08:54 of all the cliches.
00:08:55 - All of the different movie beats.
00:08:58 - Yeah.
00:08:59 - There is nothing that we can do now,
00:09:02 but he can recommend a good psychiatrist.
00:09:05 - I'm getting the heck out of here.
00:09:07 - I need to talk to someone at the consulate
00:09:10 who can help me.
00:09:11 I need a specialist.
00:09:12 - Well, this darker lighting does feel inspired
00:09:19 by the Flanagan movies, I would say.
00:09:22 Specifically the lighting.
00:09:23 Maybe not as blue though, but pretty blue.
00:09:27 Ew.
00:09:33 Oh, that is.
00:09:39 Jesus.
00:09:41 Oh, it's his hate.
00:09:42 Thought it said Kate at first.
00:09:44 - Wish it said rebel on his stomach.
00:09:46 Damaged.
00:09:48 Not this priest.
00:09:53 - Yeah, Ralph Macchio, Daniel Brühl.
00:09:55 Way over your head.
00:09:57 Whoa!
00:09:58 (laughing)
00:10:00 Please do a montage where it's just every priest.
00:10:09 - This movie is not what I'm really enjoying about it.
00:10:14 - Oh my God.
00:10:15 - It's the exact thing that shouldn't be working for me,
00:10:16 which is how fast paced this shit is.
00:10:18 - It's frigging Django.
00:10:20 It's OG Django.
00:10:21 - That is not Jamie Foxx, Sean.
00:10:26 - He's in white face, okay?
00:10:29 It's okay.
00:10:38 - You know what I just realized about this?
00:10:40 They treat his story like it's a cop movie.
00:10:43 - Yes, they do, absolutely.
00:10:45 He's in a cop movie and they're in a haunted house comedy.
00:10:48 - And I will call you with the most vital information
00:11:00 at the midpoint or finale.
00:11:07 Not like the other demons.
00:11:08 - Hey, I take this kind of wicked fast paced entertainment
00:11:12 over the pretentious self-serious boring slow.
00:11:17 I thought this would play out remarkably different.
00:11:22 - Yeah.
00:11:23 - This movie is having so much fun.
00:11:26 - Movie is shot like a serious movie
00:11:28 and it's edited like an action comedy.
00:11:30 - It is having a blast.
00:11:33 (laughing)
00:11:35 - The church sent someone, an expert in these matters.
00:11:47 (speaking in foreign language)
00:11:51 - Well, I like the way his character's illustrated
00:11:53 because he's gonna factor out everything
00:11:54 before last thing being.
00:11:56 - It's the devil.
00:11:57 - Yeah, yeah.
00:11:58 So the trauma thing will actually factor into the story.
00:12:01 - He's upstairs.
00:12:02 (speaking in foreign language)
00:12:06 - Yeah, I love the layers he brings.
00:12:13 He's like apathetic, jovial qualities.
00:12:15 - Yeah, he just feels like a real guy.
00:12:16 - He's very multilayered, he's very natural.
00:12:19 Where I feel like normally this kind of character
00:12:20 would be just so serious.
00:12:22 - Only about the faith and nothing else in life.
00:12:25 - Yeah.
00:12:26 (growling)
00:12:29 - Whoa, whoa.
00:12:34 - Damn.
00:12:38 - I think that might be one of the better splits,
00:12:41 but Iris gags I've ever seen.
00:12:44 - What is your purpose?
00:12:45 - I'm here for you.
00:12:47 - Way to go, man.
00:12:48 - Then you must know my name.
00:12:50 I know your soul and every shameless sin.
00:12:54 - That's not an answer.
00:12:56 - You cannot.
00:12:57 - Oh, get ready.
00:12:58 - My sins have been absorbed by the one true master.
00:13:01 - Do not speak of him.
00:13:02 - Are you afraid of him?
00:13:03 - Deus noistic.
00:13:05 (laughing)
00:13:07 - Ubique est.
00:13:08 - Last battle.
00:13:11 - You only do because God allows it.
00:13:13 - Ooh.
00:13:15 - Did he allow that?
00:13:17 - That's a good one.
00:13:18 - This is just the beginning.
00:13:20 You don't know who Lord D is.
00:13:22 - Who is that voice?
00:13:23 It sounds so familiar.
00:13:25 - My name is Nightmare.
00:13:27 - I am the devil and I'm here to do the devil's work.
00:13:31 - My nightmare is France winning the World Cup.
00:13:35 - I can't hide behind your jokes forever.
00:13:39 - Gabriel.
00:13:42 - Yes.
00:13:45 - Oh.
00:13:53 - Oh.
00:13:54 - Oh, smart.
00:14:02 Preying on his trauma.
00:14:04 - Whoa.
00:14:08 - Wow.
00:14:14 - Is that the same bird the little girl was drawing?
00:14:17 - Maybe.
00:14:18 - Your son is under the influence of a very powerful demon.
00:14:22 Removing the boy from this place could be fatal.
00:14:25 - That would be so horrifying.
00:14:27 Even if I'm not a believer, I'd be like, oh, maybe.
00:14:30 - Seriously?
00:14:30 - He was in the car accident that killed his father.
00:14:34 He saw his father impaled.
00:14:36 - Ooh, wow.
00:14:39 - I'll do number on you.
00:14:41 - Trauma such as you describe
00:14:42 can be a gateway for the devil.
00:14:44 Suffering can make a soul desperate for connection.
00:14:48 - Damn it, we all have trauma.
00:14:51 - We're all possessed.
00:14:53 - I have so much trauma.
00:14:54 Why does the devil never comfort me?
00:14:56 - What did I do?
00:14:57 - Gotta get a little bit more trauma.
00:14:59 - This is not right at the cutoff point.
00:15:02 - Henry?
00:15:02 - Now maybe, maybe should have given the daughter
00:15:13 a heads up.
00:15:14 - You should have had this conversation
00:15:17 with the both of them.
00:15:18 - Maybe.
00:15:21 - I'm in hell.
00:15:22 - Mommy's with the maggots now.
00:15:27 - Amy, honey, it's dad.
00:15:31 - That is evil.
00:15:32 - You're all going to die.
00:15:34 - Damn, that was swift.
00:15:39 - What prayer do you know that you would say over and over,
00:15:41 even under pressure?
00:15:42 - The Hail Mary.
00:15:43 But if it is under pressure,
00:15:45 I would prefer to say it in Spanish.
00:15:47 - That's fine.
00:15:48 Your job is to pray.
00:15:50 - I don't think matter to God what language it is.
00:15:53 - Do not respond to anything it says or does.
00:15:56 Your job is to be implacable.
00:15:58 You know any jokes?
00:15:59 - No.
00:16:00 - You should learn some.
00:16:01 The devil does not like jokes.
00:16:02 - And I need you to open for me.
00:16:04 Work out a tight five.
00:16:05 - How did Captain Hook die, Satan?
00:16:07 (laughing)
00:16:10 - What do you call a black guy flying an airplane?
00:16:12 - He looks a little scared.
00:16:15 Gabe, you ran out on me last time.
00:16:18 Like the coward you are, soldier boy.
00:16:22 - Soldier boy, tell him.
00:16:24 - Know what I'm going to do to you, Gabriele.
00:16:28 I'm going to (beep) you.
00:16:29 - Yeah.
00:16:30 - And you'll hate yourself for the release you feel
00:16:36 when I (beep) you.
00:16:37 - Whoa.
00:16:38 - Damn.
00:16:38 - Hardcore shit.
00:16:41 - Do you like how it's an actual,
00:16:44 we're entering the ring with you?
00:16:46 - Yeah.
00:16:47 - Yeah, let's go.
00:16:48 Let's try to exercise me.
00:16:49 - Action and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ
00:16:52 by the descent of the Holy Spirit.
00:16:54 - He's fading.
00:16:54 - By the coming of our Lord for judgment.
00:16:56 - So tell me.
00:16:57 - Come on, buddy, keep going.
00:16:59 - Through the lesson, I am a minister of God
00:17:01 despite my unworthiness.
00:17:03 (dramatic music)
00:17:05 - Keep going, keep going.
00:17:07 - Ooh.
00:17:17 - Oh, hey.
00:17:18 - Your sins will seek you out.
00:17:21 - Oh no.
00:17:21 - My sins will be forgiven.
00:17:23 - In order for him to beat this guy,
00:17:25 he's got to beat his own sins.
00:17:27 - That's right, release the trauma.
00:17:30 - Why didn't you believe me?
00:17:32 - The soul rests in peace.
00:17:34 - I shall rock you.
00:17:36 - Wowee.
00:17:38 - Cool visuals here.
00:17:42 - Yeah, nice match cutting.
00:17:44 - This looks like a fun set.
00:17:45 - How touching.
00:17:47 Is that all you got?
00:17:48 And how about you, panty sniffer?
00:17:51 - Oh, that's a real sin.
00:17:55 - Stood before your congregation
00:17:57 like you're better than them
00:17:59 when you're f***ing their daughters.
00:18:01 - Oh my God.
00:18:03 - Wow, man.
00:18:04 - Shut up.
00:18:05 - Thomas, Thomas, don't speak to it.
00:18:07 - Okay, we will cover this up later.
00:18:09 - Yeah, that's what we do best.
00:18:11 - We'll move you to a new diocese later.
00:18:11 - We're better at that than this.
00:18:13 - Yeah.
00:18:14 - You took the bait.
00:18:16 Your holy church will crumble from the inside.
00:18:20 - Wowee, he's met his match.
00:18:24 - That must've been so fun for that boy.
00:18:26 - I just, all I can think throughout that scene
00:18:28 is what a fun day on set.
00:18:30 - I do have a hard time just getting immersed
00:18:32 into the performance.
00:18:34 It's not really his fault, like the,
00:18:36 there's just something about it where I'm very much aware
00:18:38 of watching a child actor do this.
00:18:40 - Yeah.
00:18:41 - But I wouldn't fault the kid for that.
00:18:43 - I mean, I don't want it to be eerie to hear
00:18:45 the adult voice, but it's always gonna be like,
00:18:46 oh, they looped it in.
00:18:47 - Yeah, it's a voice, it feels like a voiceover.
00:18:50 - Yeah.
00:18:51 - Kid matching it.
00:18:52 - Yeah.
00:18:52 - Whereas like, you take Reagan from Exorcist,
00:18:55 like it sounds like it's really coming from within.
00:18:57 - Yeah, and they just manipulated the audio track.
00:18:59 - A promise was made.
00:19:02 She wanted me to leave the priesthood.
00:19:06 - Oh, it was a lover.
00:19:08 - Yes.
00:19:09 - That's different.
00:19:11 - They're proverbial daughters of--
00:19:12 - True stories.
00:19:14 - So he's more like--
00:19:15 - Pass.
00:19:16 - Right.
00:19:17 (laughing)
00:19:18 - How do we make this guy a hero?
00:19:21 For love.
00:19:21 - Who is?
00:19:22 - Rosania.
00:19:25 - Whoa, who's having confession?
00:19:26 - Girl that I should have helped.
00:19:29 It can sense our guilt,
00:19:30 and it uses it against us as a distraction.
00:19:36 - You better grieve fast.
00:19:38 (laughing)
00:19:39 Get some closure.
00:19:41 - We need to find out the name of this demon.
00:19:44 Knowing its name, it weakens them.
00:19:46 - Investigative exorcism.
00:19:48 - I have marked the space for you.
00:19:51 No, not.
00:19:51 - It is in nothing.
00:19:53 - Close enough to Spanish.
00:19:55 Prayer has more power in Latin.
00:19:57 - Sure, it's the root of so many languages.
00:19:59 (thunder rumbling)
00:20:02 - The seal of the Vatican.
00:20:04 - Oh, the Pope's vacation house.
00:20:08 - You think they would have given a heads up about this?
00:20:11 - Eh.
00:20:12 (thunder rumbling)
00:20:14 - Ooh.
00:20:17 - Upside down cross, here we go.
00:20:20 - Let's go.
00:20:21 - Here we go.
00:20:23 - You can now do that at haunted attractions, no problem.
00:20:26 (laughing)
00:20:28 - Oh yeah, try it yourself.
00:20:40 - Hey, someone needs to die.
00:20:41 I hope it's him.
00:20:43 - Someone needs to be pinned against a wall
00:20:45 and thrown across the room and levitated,
00:20:48 killed on the ceiling.
00:20:49 (knocking)
00:20:53 - Who?
00:20:54 - I just would not be sleeping alone.
00:20:56 - Yeah, I would be like with mom
00:20:58 at the very least at all times.
00:21:00 Yep.
00:21:05 - No one's getting out of here alive.
00:21:09 (gasping)
00:21:11 - Mike Tyson is my name.
00:21:14 - This guy's a dumbass.
00:21:15 (screaming)
00:21:16 - Oh, wow.
00:21:17 (laughing)
00:21:20 - It's like a poltergeist movie with her.
00:21:22 - She just wants to be confined, you know?
00:21:26 (screaming)
00:21:28 - Creepy.
00:21:30 - Ooh.
00:21:38 (screaming)
00:21:40 - Whoa.
00:21:41 - Damn, she's be sinking into the bed.
00:21:45 - What?
00:21:46 Such a crazy true story.
00:21:48 - Let's see what secret you're hiding.
00:21:51 - It's a lot more of a fun house movie than I expected.
00:21:56 - I mean, it definitely feels like it, whoa,
00:21:59 wants to be a conjuring kind of movie.
00:22:02 - Go.
00:22:06 (screaming)
00:22:09 - Damn, that's wild.
00:22:13 - Whoa, this looks like it would have been a really fun set.
00:22:16 (screaming)
00:22:19 - I mean, they should go stay somewhere else.
00:22:26 - Yeah, they should absolutely go to a hotel.
00:22:29 Go back to America.
00:22:30 - Your dad left us this place.
00:22:32 - Yes.
00:22:33 - We're not going anywhere.
00:22:35 - For his memory, we stay here.
00:22:38 - It's one of her nails.
00:22:41 - Whoa.
00:22:42 - I'm so curious to know what this director has done before.
00:22:44 - Yeah.
00:22:45 - Everything is redacted.
00:22:48 - Oh, we're at the midpoint.
00:22:51 - Oh, yeah, where's that phone call?
00:22:53 Call them up.
00:22:54 - I think we're at the exact middle of it.
00:22:57 (laughing)
00:22:58 - You know your screenwriting structure, boy.
00:23:00 - The devil is the great deceiver.
00:23:04 He can make you see things from your past.
00:23:06 - If you do not believe me, just ask my friend.
00:23:10 - Whoa.
00:23:11 - This is like a Jack Nicholson play.
00:23:13 (laughing)
00:23:16 - In the history of the church.
00:23:18 - And they are?
00:23:20 - The victims.
00:23:21 The ones who would not convert.
00:23:23 - As above, so below.
00:23:25 - I feel like whenever they light any kind of match,
00:23:27 it's the big fire.
00:23:28 - Yeah, someone's across the set
00:23:30 with a big old lamp to shine on them.
00:23:32 (thudding)
00:23:35 - Two cross keys.
00:23:38 A little gas, a little sulfur.
00:23:41 So no smoking, huh?
00:23:43 - Brimstone.
00:23:44 - It's a door, push with me.
00:23:49 (thudding)
00:23:52 - Whoa.
00:23:53 - Damn.
00:23:55 - Iron Maiden, excellent.
00:24:00 - Hey, this would be really cool to discover.
00:24:02 - Yeah, how creepy that would be, but cool.
00:24:04 (laughing)
00:24:06 - I'll see you.
00:24:09 - Secret note.
00:24:11 - The ring of the cardinal protector.
00:24:13 He was the final hope.
00:24:15 - Wow.
00:24:16 - It looks like he is a prisoner.
00:24:19 The cage is for his own safety.
00:24:22 They do this when an exorcism fails.
00:24:27 - Whoa.
00:24:29 (speaking in foreign language)
00:24:32 - Cardinal protector.
00:24:38 (speaking in foreign language)
00:24:40 (thudding)
00:24:42 - It's locked.
00:24:43 - I have a friend here.
00:24:45 (speaking in foreign language)
00:24:48 - It's the ring, swallowed it?
00:24:50 - In the stomach.
00:24:52 - He didn't poop it out when he died?
00:24:54 (squelching)
00:24:56 (screaming)
00:24:57 - You are gonna get so many airborne
00:25:00 pathogen-based diseases.
00:25:02 (squelching)
00:25:04 - Damn, he swallowed all that?
00:25:07 (laughing)
00:25:08 That's a huge ass key to swallow.
00:25:10 - That's how he died.
00:25:12 - How the, do you swallow that?
00:25:15 - I don't know.
00:25:16 (speaking in foreign language)
00:25:20 - And its name is?
00:25:27 (speaking in foreign language)
00:25:31 - Is the information just so shocking
00:25:34 he's having a heart attack?
00:25:35 - Yeah.
00:25:36 One last bit of excitement.
00:25:40 - Useless.
00:25:41 - Useless man over here.
00:25:43 - Never gonna make that call.
00:25:46 - This movie really does lack atmosphere though.
00:25:49 It's got all the sets for it and the lighting for it.
00:25:53 - Lacks mood and atmosphere.
00:25:56 - Significantly.
00:25:57 - That is greatly elevated by performances.
00:26:01 - Yeah.
00:26:02 - Like everyone's really good.
00:26:04 - We are getting closer to hell.
00:26:05 - Oh yeah, let's go.
00:26:09 Getting warmer.
00:26:10 - Descend.
00:26:11 - Whoa.
00:26:12 - Now there's a real Iron Maiden.
00:26:14 - See, if I'm gonna hide all this,
00:26:16 I would build it on like,
00:26:17 I'd build a really small house on top of it.
00:26:20 - Not a cathedral, not like a diocese castle.
00:26:24 - Yeah.
00:26:25 - Tell it.
00:26:27 Tell who?
00:26:27 Gabrielle.
00:26:29 - Uh oh.
00:26:32 - I'm mort.
00:26:33 - He's off the force.
00:26:34 - What trouble has he got us into this time?
00:26:35 (man screams)
00:26:37 - Whoa.
00:26:37 - Ew.
00:26:40 - That's why we need the old guard vanquished
00:26:43 from this place.
00:26:44 - One of the greatest exorcists of all time.
00:26:47 - No, no shit.
00:26:50 God, everyone's just swallowing stuff today.
00:26:52 - The exorcist himself died.
00:26:56 - His journal.
00:26:58 I was summoned to the town of Sokovia,
00:27:01 a possessed monk, in the year of our lord, 1475.
00:27:05 - The Sokovia Accords.
00:27:07 - 1475, damn.
00:27:08 - He answered me from the mouth of another,
00:27:11 and then a third.
00:27:13 Multiple possessions.
00:27:16 - I'm getting it, I'm getting it.
00:27:18 - Yes.
00:27:19 (laughs)
00:27:20 - I hope young priest dies here soon.
00:27:21 - Oh, he's gonna, he's marked.
00:27:23 - The exorcist becomes possessed himself.
00:27:26 Everything that happens after this
00:27:28 is the work of the devil.
00:27:32 - Woof.
00:27:33 - Centuries of persecution and torture,
00:27:35 all started by the friar,
00:27:36 and done in the name of God, by the devil.
00:27:40 - That is a great trick.
00:27:42 - There's so much information.
00:27:44 (woman crying)
00:27:45 - Amy.
00:27:46 - Henry.
00:27:50 - It's okay, Mommy.
00:27:52 - Whoa.
00:27:52 - Henry's okay.
00:27:54 (laughs)
00:27:56 - I just need your sister for a minute, Amy.
00:27:57 Can you forgive me, Mom?
00:27:59 - Damn, he's got that face down.
00:28:02 - But does no eyebrow have an ass.
00:28:07 - This demon is trying to find them,
00:28:11 to raise an army and destroy the church.
00:28:14 - A legion.
00:28:15 - Oh my God, there's a bigger plan at hand here.
00:28:18 - Yes, the whole franchise worth.
00:28:20 - Whoa.
00:28:26 - Oh my God, you caused her to somersault.
00:28:28 - Yeah.
00:28:29 - Jeez.
00:28:32 - Watch me, Mommy, watch me.
00:28:36 - Watch me.
00:28:38 - No hands.
00:28:39 - Oh. - Whoa.
00:28:46 (laughs)
00:28:48 - Murder the girl in front of him.
00:28:51 - Exorcist style.
00:28:52 - Asmodeus.
00:28:55 Satanus.
00:28:57 Lucifer.
00:28:58 - Woo hoo.
00:29:04 - Dude.
00:29:08 - Oh, Jesus.
00:29:12 - When you go that deep,
00:29:13 are you like injecting into their windpipe?
00:29:16 - Damn, look at this, looks like the mummy.
00:29:18 - We have his name.
00:29:20 - I commit it to memory.
00:29:22 - Arctopus.
00:29:23 Species.
00:29:25 - Mother.
00:29:27 - Mother.
00:29:28 Oh shit.
00:29:31 - It didn't mean me.
00:29:33 It wants you.
00:29:35 - Yeah, nope.
00:29:35 - This demon feeds on exorcists.
00:29:38 - This whole thing.
00:29:38 - I thought we knew that like an hour ago.
00:29:41 - The whole reason why you're here.
00:29:44 - With greater victory for the devil.
00:29:46 - Woo hoo.
00:29:48 - And to claim the soul of the Pope's exorcist.
00:29:51 - That title.
00:29:52 - So we have what we need to beat it.
00:29:54 And to save the child.
00:29:57 - Asmodeus.
00:29:58 (laughs)
00:29:59 - We win.
00:30:00 - Ah, you guys got me.
00:30:03 I'm outta here.
00:30:04 - So long, kid.
00:30:05 - He's like Rumpelstiltskin.
00:30:07 - 1942.
00:30:09 So many of my friends were died to German bullets.
00:30:12 (heart beating)
00:30:15 Why them?
00:30:16 And not me.
00:30:19 - I committed the mortal sin of not getting shot.
00:30:21 - My life had been spared.
00:30:23 It was my responsibility to give it purpose.
00:30:25 And in my case.
00:30:27 - It's the bird.
00:30:27 - The bird, she was drawing and he vomited.
00:30:30 It's all connected.
00:30:31 - But when it mattered, I failed.
00:30:34 I did not help her.
00:30:37 I did not believe her.
00:30:39 - You should have, she's hot.
00:30:40 - Yeah, it's the first thing.
00:30:42 - That night, the devil f*cked me.
00:30:46 - What does this devil look like?
00:30:48 - How big is the dick?
00:30:50 (laughs)
00:30:52 - Was I good?
00:30:54 - I was a nexus.
00:30:56 The mentally disturbed slowed my job.
00:30:59 But that all changed because of her.
00:31:02 (dramatic music)
00:31:04 - She flipped.
00:31:08 - Upside down cross dive, swan dive.
00:31:11 - The sexual abuse, they cover up
00:31:14 within the walls of the Vatican city.
00:31:16 With the innocent girl.
00:31:19 - Looks like wings.
00:31:20 - Yeah.
00:31:21 - It's time to lay down that burden.
00:31:24 I absolve you of your sins.
00:31:26 In the name of the father, the son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:31:31 - Amen.
00:31:32 - Let's go kick this demon's ass.
00:31:34 - Yeah.
00:31:36 - I give you the miraculous medal, Holy Fire Insurance.
00:31:41 - This movie's so theatrical.
00:31:43 - Everything just feels like a set.
00:31:47 - Yeah.
00:31:48 - Like it doesn't quite look real to me.
00:31:50 - And the wides are very kind of like workman-like.
00:31:53 (laughs)
00:31:55 - Whoa.
00:31:59 - Did he bear his soul to you, Thomas?
00:32:03 Like your little b*gger breasts?
00:32:06 - Ha ha ha.
00:32:07 - Now the voice sounds a lot more natural.
00:32:09 - Yeah, now he's all built up.
00:32:11 - With his twisted face.
00:32:13 - Confessing to your God, Gabe.
00:32:16 - He was his name.
00:32:18 - Shouldn't you be confessing to her?
00:32:20 - Wowee.
00:32:24 - You are all in my mind.
00:32:27 - I burn in hell because of you.
00:32:31 - What a neat visual.
00:32:32 - You are all in my mind.
00:32:34 - Why is he talking to that girl on the ceiling?
00:32:37 - Get her off of there.
00:32:39 - Yeah.
00:32:39 - Help her.
00:32:40 - Tell me to get on my knees and say my prayers.
00:32:45 - Oh, dude.
00:32:46 - You chose God over that?
00:32:48 - Yeah.
00:32:48 - You got a lot of resolve, man.
00:32:51 - Come on, man.
00:32:53 - What is your problem?
00:32:54 - Flee from the light of God.
00:32:57 See thee beneath God.
00:32:59 - Damn it, get out, get out of my house.
00:33:01 - This is the house of God.
00:33:02 - Yeah.
00:33:03 - Die.
00:33:04 - The son of God is so bad to cross his hands.
00:33:07 - Damn, his face is really mangled.
00:33:09 - Looks like an orc.
00:33:11 - He does, like a little goblin.
00:33:15 - I'm here, you will remain.
00:33:17 Damn, forever.
00:33:18 - We shall be in the hour of our death.
00:33:20 - To crush Satan's scum.
00:33:22 - I am a pro-dias.
00:33:24 - Oh, he said his own name.
00:33:26 - Banded by thy power, they made you the evil spirit.
00:33:30 Encounter them on every side.
00:33:32 Resist their bold attack.
00:33:34 - Damn, they're doing English now.
00:33:35 Whoa, whoa.
00:33:37 - Sweet sauce.
00:33:38 - See, when they do shit like that, the demons,
00:33:41 are they like dislocating his jaw?
00:33:44 Are they permanently damaging him,
00:33:45 or is this something in his perception of everyone else?
00:33:49 - Yeah, that's a great question.
00:33:51 - Henry, I love you.
00:33:51 - Go to him.
00:33:53 - Henry, come back to me.
00:33:54 (audience applauding)
00:33:55 Henry, please, come to me.
00:33:57 - That was a good effect.
00:33:59 - You must resist.
00:34:01 - I can't.
00:34:02 - You must resist.
00:34:04 (Henry breathing heavily)
00:34:07 - Whoa.
00:34:08 - Oh, this kid is falling apart.
00:34:09 (dramatic music)
00:34:12 - He's still breathing.
00:34:13 - Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:34:15 - God, no.
00:34:16 - He's like emaciated.
00:34:19 - God.
00:34:21 - Holy shit.
00:34:24 - Holy shit.
00:34:25 - It's in the mouth.
00:34:27 (dramatic music)
00:34:29 - Oh, yeah.
00:34:33 - Let's go, evil.
00:34:34 - Let's go, spider walk.
00:34:36 Start eating some glass.
00:34:39 - How are they so good at climbing walls?
00:34:43 They're always so good.
00:34:44 - Every demon was a rock climber.
00:34:46 - They all did parkour in some way.
00:34:48 - Yeah.
00:34:49 (demon growling)
00:34:52 - Do a flip.
00:34:54 (laughing)
00:34:56 - Wowee.
00:34:58 - Surrender yourself to me.
00:35:02 - Whoa.
00:35:03 - Man, they keep smashing mommy through shit.
00:35:06 - A lot of big old stunts in this movie.
00:35:09 - Oh, my God.
00:35:12 - I feel like this director has an action movie background.
00:35:14 - Yeah.
00:35:15 - Or something.
00:35:16 - Well, the action is the stuff that punches the hardest
00:35:18 and feels the most engaged.
00:35:20 - You're all gonna die.
00:35:22 - Henry, please.
00:35:23 - Henry's gone.
00:35:24 (demon growling)
00:35:26 - Bum, bum, good music.
00:35:28 - I love you.
00:35:29 (demon growling)
00:35:32 - Ow.
00:35:32 - Someone come, bless this bathwater they're in.
00:35:36 - It's me you want.
00:35:37 Let the children go.
00:35:38 - They all suffer because of you.
00:35:40 Say the words, piggy.
00:35:42 - Say the words, piggy.
00:35:45 - Oh, wow, he got out of those easily.
00:35:46 - Be the monster you dreamed of being.
00:35:49 - Ooh.
00:35:50 - Be my piggy.
00:35:52 - Look at makeup on the kid.
00:35:53 - Yeah.
00:35:55 That is disgusting.
00:35:56 - Looks monstrous.
00:35:57 (demon growling)
00:35:58 - Wow.
00:35:59 (demon growling)
00:36:02 - Oh, dude, how's he gonna get out of this one?
00:36:08 (demon growling)
00:36:11 - No, go get Anna.
00:36:13 (laughing)
00:36:15 - Oh, this is cool.
00:36:28 - Oh, what have you done?
00:36:30 You took the demon in?
00:36:31 - Yeah, yeah, I wanna see how this plays.
00:36:33 - Take the cross from my hand.
00:36:35 Take it.
00:36:36 - Oh my God.
00:36:37 Oh my God.
00:36:38 Oh, Henry, you came back to me.
00:36:41 You're safe now.
00:36:43 - For now.
00:36:43 - Get them out of here.
00:36:45 Go.
00:36:45 - Hey, hey, Julia, we have to go.
00:36:48 - Please, let's go.
00:36:49 - Is he just like containing it right now?
00:36:51 - Yeah, I guess.
00:36:52 He's just like fighting it till he can get out.
00:36:54 - Your soul is mine.
00:36:56 Your soul is mine.
00:36:58 (laughing)
00:37:01 Flawless victory.
00:37:03 - Follow me.
00:37:05 - Whoa.
00:37:10 Not so hot now, are ya?
00:37:14 (demon growling)
00:37:16 - Oh, the army's going to work.
00:37:22 - You would sacrifice yourself to save those children.
00:37:25 But now you are mine.
00:37:27 - Oh, fight it.
00:37:29 Eat a Bible.
00:37:30 Drink a gallon of holy water.
00:37:32 - Thank you, Father.
00:37:35 - Thank you, Father, for you have sinned.
00:37:37 - That's the last we ever see of him.
00:37:39 - Yep.
00:37:41 - You will not take me.
00:37:43 - You frightful fools.
00:37:45 - Forgive me, Lord.
00:37:46 - Ooh, boy.
00:37:50 - He's gonna keep him alive.
00:37:51 - I need my pig to get me inside the Vatican game.
00:37:55 (demon growling)
00:37:57 - I enjoy the personality of this demon.
00:38:01 - He's got a big old game plan, too.
00:38:03 He's got big goals.
00:38:05 - I would've just jumped out the window
00:38:06 if that was your goal.
00:38:07 - And he goes right back to not talking ever again.
00:38:15 - Impale the mom.
00:38:16 - Yeah.
00:38:17 (laughing)
00:38:18 - Break it full circle.
00:38:21 - Damn us both to hell.
00:38:23 - Oh.
00:38:26 - Say what?
00:38:33 - Mother Mary?
00:38:34 - Oh, damn.
00:38:40 - Oh, they did it.
00:38:41 - Oh.
00:38:44 - That's mean.
00:38:48 - Still torturing him with this one piece of trauma.
00:38:51 - This movie is so goofy.
00:38:59 - Yeah.
00:39:00 - He's gone, your friend.
00:39:03 It would be my great pleasure to excoriate your soul.
00:39:08 - Good vocab.
00:39:09 - Fight it.
00:39:11 It is just in your head.
00:39:13 - He is not here.
00:39:15 The little piggy is slumping at Hell's Trough,
00:39:18 where he belongs.
00:39:19 - I love that Russell Crowe committed to this.
00:39:21 - I know.
00:39:22 - Pray with me.
00:39:23 - Wow, true magic.
00:39:28 - Where two of you gather,
00:39:29 in my name.
00:39:31 - Oh.
00:39:32 - Lord have mercy.
00:39:35 Say it, Lord have mercy.
00:39:38 - Say it in Latin.
00:39:39 - All this wait you come here.
00:39:43 Find him.
00:39:44 - Levitate.
00:39:45 - Yes.
00:39:46 - Obligatory levitate.
00:39:47 - Check.
00:39:48 (speaking in foreign language)
00:39:52 - Give up, he's mine.
00:40:00 - Ugh.
00:40:00 (speaking in foreign language)
00:40:04 - It's like Doctor Strange magic.
00:40:07 - I have shown you in this man.
00:40:09 - Whoa, money shot.
00:40:13 - Say it.
00:40:14 - No.
00:40:16 (guns firing)
00:40:18 - Knock it off.
00:40:20 - We're not done yet.
00:40:21 - Does that sound like a video game character?
00:40:27 - Yeah.
00:40:28 - I will take you both.
00:40:30 - Nice.
00:40:31 - Whoa.
00:40:34 - Whoa.
00:40:35 - No.
00:40:36 - Sexy.
00:40:40 - That's somebody's king.
00:40:46 - Bless the water.
00:40:47 - Your saints will seek for you.
00:40:49 - Come on, use them in.
00:40:52 - Lord grant me the power.
00:40:54 - Oh yeah, get that righteous holy steel.
00:40:58 - Whoa.
00:40:59 - Whoa.
00:41:00 - Did not expect that.
00:41:01 We need more of that in this movie.
00:41:03 - Yeah.
00:41:03 - A wild kill.
00:41:07 - In the name of the holy mother.
00:41:10 - She is really God.
00:41:15 - So it really got brought to life, these people?
00:41:18 - I guess, whoa.
00:41:19 - Did they add like a camera flash charge sound
00:41:22 to that cross beat?
00:41:24 - In the name of the holy spirit.
00:41:27 (speaking in foreign language)
00:41:31 - Dope.
00:41:37 - That cool?
00:41:37 - That's some good 2000s supernatural horror right there.
00:41:40 - Ghost Rider action.
00:41:44 - Got dragged to hell.
00:41:45 - So they beat it?
00:41:47 - For now, the devil's always out there.
00:41:49 - What'd they do that was so different?
00:41:51 There were two of them?
00:41:52 - I guess it was time for them to be vanquished.
00:41:55 (speaking in foreign language)
00:42:02 - That's why.
00:42:02 - That's why.
00:42:04 - That's pulse powerful.
00:42:05 - Whiskey.
00:42:10 - Praise be to God.
00:42:11 - Both priests died shortly after this.
00:42:14 Moments later due to heavy bodily trauma,
00:42:17 internal bleeding and otherwise.
00:42:20 - The congregation has requested a full report.
00:42:24 - So Cardinal Sullivan can tell me again
00:42:26 that evil only exists in my imagination.
00:42:29 - Cardinal Sullivan has taken a sabbatical
00:42:32 in the Isle of Guam.
00:42:33 - And everyone who thinks like him as well.
00:42:36 - She is even is God.
00:42:43 - Take shot.
00:42:44 - The audience is so weird.
00:42:48 - Yeah.
00:42:49 - So weird.
00:42:50 - The Vatican has purchased the Abbey from the Vasquez family
00:42:52 and reconsecrated the soil.
00:42:55 The family has safely relocated back to the US
00:42:58 where the boy made a full recovery.
00:43:00 - And had no trauma whatsoever.
00:43:04 - Asmodeus has been defeated,
00:43:06 but there are many more to be found.
00:43:08 Soon we will know all of the other 199 sites on Earth.
00:43:13 - They're doing world building.
00:43:15 - They're setting it up.
00:43:17 Got 200 sequels coming.
00:43:19 - This mummy franchise didn't come out.
00:43:21 - I just need a horror franchise, please.
00:43:24 - More than a lifetime's work for one priest,
00:43:28 but two priests.
00:43:29 - Oh my God, they should do a priest cinematic universe.
00:43:32 - An ensemble of priests.
00:43:34 - Let's go to work.
00:43:37 - Let's go to hell.
00:43:39 (laughing)
00:43:41 - It's right on, dude.
00:43:43 - Hell yeah.
00:43:45 - Let's go.
00:43:47 - This movie is something, man.
00:43:51 - Wow, 2016.
00:43:56 - I gotta guess it was books.
00:43:58 - The books are good.
00:44:00 - Ah.
00:44:06 - What a rousing true story.
00:44:07 Julius Avery.
00:44:09 I've heard that name before,
00:44:12 but I might be getting it confused.
00:44:14 - It is based on two of his books.
00:44:17 - And they were good.
00:44:19 Good books.
00:44:21 - Must be full of nothing but horror cliches.
00:44:23 (laughing)
00:44:26 - The pulp novelist, Father Gabriel.
00:44:29 I mean, if this is anywhere near what he's writing about,
00:44:35 I mean, it's pretty much what you got to look forward to.
00:44:38 This was like if The Conjuring decided
00:44:42 that the family wasn't really that important.
00:44:44 - I know.
00:44:45 - Franco Nero, there you go.
00:44:46 - All that stuff they set up with the family
00:44:48 to have a whole little grievance arc tale.
00:44:51 Just like, we're driving off.
00:44:53 - Yep, we're leaving.
00:44:54 - It's the end of it.
00:44:55 - We're done.
00:44:56 This movie can't be three hours long.
00:44:57 - No real resolution with us.
00:44:59 - Yep.
00:45:00 - See ya.
00:45:02 - Give every character beat to Russell Crowe.
00:45:05 - And set him up for sequels.
00:45:07 - Yeah.
00:45:08 Two priests can get it done.
00:45:10 - Wow, that was so cheesy.
00:45:13 And then when it wasn't, it was kind of boring.
00:45:17 (laughing)
00:45:19 - Yeah.
00:45:19 It had a salvaging amount of cheese
00:45:24 and some pretty punchy jump scare and gore.
00:45:29 Like when it descends into being the kind of movie
00:45:32 you expect it to be, it's decent at doing that.
00:45:35 But Russell Crowe especially,
00:45:38 just ties the entire thing together.
00:45:40 - Oh dude, it was made in conjunction with TSG Entertainment.
00:45:43 - Oh, the best.
00:45:45 - All right, all right.
00:45:48 The Pulp's Exorcist, come on.
00:45:51 What, this has a 47% Ron Tuminos score, 81% audience.
00:45:55 - That's right.
00:45:56 Which one is the correct score?
00:45:59 - I wanna see what this director did.
00:46:02 Julius Avery.
00:46:03 - He did Overlord.
00:46:05 - Yes, oh damn, I should have thrown it out.
00:46:07 I thought that was him.
00:46:08 - His whole direction just felt like an action movie.
00:46:11 - Yeah, yeah.
00:46:13 And I mean, yeah, Overlord.
00:46:14 - How he is Samaritan.
00:46:15 - Is that the Salon movie?
00:46:17 - Yeah, yeah, Samaritan.
00:46:18 - So action, horror, period.
00:46:21 - Is that like a Rob Redford movie?
00:46:22 - No, a McGregor movie.
00:46:23 - Oh my.
00:46:24 - Okay, yeah.
00:46:25 - Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
00:46:27 - I mean, Overlord's great.
00:46:29 - Overlord.
00:46:30 - Overlord, this felt like an action movie director.
00:46:34 - Yeah.
00:46:35 - But no, I felt like it was a bit at odds with something.
00:46:38 Like, is this self-aware or is it completely not self-aware?
00:46:43 - Yeah, right.
00:46:45 What are you trying to do and are you succeeding or not?
00:46:48 - Yeah.
00:46:49 - Or are you succeeding in spite of yourself?
00:46:51 - 'Cause then it has like the rock and roll music.
00:46:53 It has like the tag at the end of like,
00:46:56 the books are good.
00:46:56 And then it's got this like cinematic universe
00:46:59 or franchise sequel set up at the end.
00:47:01 - Yeah, they've got their whole prodigium right there.
00:47:03 They've got their whole base of operations.
00:47:06 - But no, it was like nothing but trope central.
00:47:09 - Yes.
00:47:10 - Nothing but, whereas you take something like Overlord,
00:47:13 which has a lot of familiarity with its setup
00:47:17 and its premise, but it had a very unique way
00:47:20 of going about it that was actually filled with tension
00:47:23 and genuine excitement, where this was nothing,
00:47:26 but it was like literally nothing but tropes
00:47:30 with a couple of moments that were like,
00:47:32 ooh, cool, I like the makeup.
00:47:35 This is a fun looking set.
00:47:36 - Yeah, a lot of interesting locations.
00:47:39 - There's an interesting intention here
00:47:41 with Priest overcoming his own traumas
00:47:44 in order to defeat him.
00:47:46 When they were doing the whole exposition dump
00:47:48 about like what's underneath his house,
00:47:50 like his door, all that stuff.
00:47:52 When they were doing all that, it just like,
00:47:54 they wouldn't just stop dogpiling the information.
00:47:57 And I was just checking out.
00:47:59 I was like, I'm starting to lose sight of this
00:48:01 because I'm a little bored.
00:48:02 - What do you mean?
00:48:04 - It was so boring.
00:48:04 Just like just explaining for so fucking long.
00:48:08 It wouldn't stop.
00:48:09 - Like being read a book.
00:48:11 - Yeah.
00:48:11 Yes, it was so boring there.
00:48:15 And that's what I mean when it started like get serious
00:48:19 and he's doing his confession.
00:48:22 And while I think Russell Crowe really elevates this
00:48:25 and like Alex Esso is great as well.
00:48:28 The other Priest guy is good too.
00:48:30 Yeah, it just, I just didn't really, I just found myself,
00:48:37 I started off having fun with it
00:48:39 and then I found myself getting bored with it.
00:48:41 Then the finale started bringing me back around
00:48:45 a little bit more.
00:48:47 But no, I just kept waiting for something
00:48:49 to give me some unique, something that was truly,
00:48:53 is something that was unique.
00:48:55 But man, it just, it was like a whole bunch
00:48:57 of different movies and every single trope
00:49:01 and you could predict lines.
00:49:02 You know, when you can get to the point
00:49:03 where you can predict lines,
00:49:05 you got a real problem on your hands.
00:49:07 - Sure.
00:49:08 - Yeah, and they dropped the whole premise
00:49:12 of the family as well with the,
00:49:15 I couldn't tell if they never wrote that stuff
00:49:17 or if that stuff was removed just so that this wouldn't be
00:49:21 like so long that it becomes actually tedious.
00:49:24 - So long, what do you mean?
00:49:25 They just needed to have like a little button
00:49:27 of them overcoming the grief.
00:49:29 - Hey.
00:49:30 - They've come with just like, had five minutes on it here
00:49:33 just to fucking resolve that little resolution.
00:49:36 - Well, yeah, I guess throughout the movie,
00:49:38 it's like you meet them, I don't know,
00:49:40 you feel like, again, the conjuring is like
00:49:42 a very solid touchstone for something like this
00:49:44 or the nun, I guess, is more apt because yeah,
00:49:47 it's like you're like the conjuring meets the nun.
00:49:49 - Yeah, totally, and it's like, you're gonna meet
00:49:51 your family who's gonna be the heart of the movie
00:49:53 and then you're gonna meet the people who,
00:49:54 you know, you're gonna meet your Warrens
00:49:56 or whoever your figure of safety and authority
00:50:00 and your chance to stop this and those are gonna be
00:50:02 kind of the two centers of everything.
00:50:04 And I feel like we ultimately got to know
00:50:05 the other priest a lot better than we could know
00:50:07 anyone in the family 'cause once they set up
00:50:10 that dad's dead and there's the trauma
00:50:13 and they have the inheritance and the boy was in the car,
00:50:15 like you don't learn anything about them.
00:50:17 - They're also a very cliche set of characters.
00:50:19 - They are, yeah, yeah, and they don't feel like
00:50:21 anybody thought about them, aside from the actors,
00:50:23 like beyond that point, so it's like you have the family,
00:50:26 you have the mom and daughter only there
00:50:30 to spark set pieces.
00:50:32 - And it seemed like the movie wasn't doing that at first.
00:50:35 - Yeah, it seemed like. - It seemed like
00:50:36 there was gonna be about the relationship
00:50:37 between Russell Crowe and her in some way.
00:50:39 - Yeah, it seemed like it was gonna,
00:50:41 it seemed like it wanted to do some kind of elevated,
00:50:45 you know, character-based, you know, sad story
00:50:49 about this family grieving and overcoming that
00:50:52 and this is all kind of a metaphor for that
00:50:53 and it sets up like early on, you know,
00:50:55 we were joking about like, oh, that's gonna be a theme,
00:50:58 you know, like love, and it's like, yeah,
00:51:00 the mother's love thing comes back,
00:51:02 but it's not like a big, you know, tied around,
00:51:06 you know, element of the character's growth
00:51:08 through the story, it's just like,
00:51:10 oh, hey, we got an opening window,
00:51:11 just remind him you're his mom real quick.
00:51:13 - Yeah. - Yeah, so it's like,
00:51:14 it feels like all that stuff
00:51:16 could have been happening off screen,
00:51:18 but it doesn't feel like they really cared to do
00:51:21 much of any of that, which just makes those scenes
00:51:24 feel kind of odd because, again,
00:51:26 everybody's putting in so much, you know,
00:51:28 everyone's really showing up and, you know,
00:51:31 bringing the performances and yet they feel like
00:51:34 they're kind of left to flail.
00:51:35 - Yeah, yeah.
00:51:38 Music was fine, it just,
00:51:41 in the,
00:51:42 the look of the,
00:51:45 the movie just really needed some type of mood,
00:51:48 it needed some type of mood and atmosphere,
00:51:50 it was lacking in that so much,
00:51:52 and I think that would have really helped propel that,
00:51:56 like 'cause the editing was kind of like gnarly to me,
00:51:59 it just wouldn't stop cutting around.
00:52:01 I thought that the uniqueness came in the form
00:52:03 of who our main character is,
00:52:06 of this kind of badass, exorcist pope,
00:52:11 and priest, this badass exorcist who's got
00:52:15 kind of a plays by his own rules, rugged personality,
00:52:18 he's like that bad, he's that cool cop,
00:52:21 but he's working with the rookie cops.
00:52:23 - Oh yeah, yeah, totally.
00:52:24 - He's got friction from the chief.
00:52:26 - It's a cop movie, it is, it's essentially a cop movie.
00:52:29 - Yeah, this new hotshot transferred in
00:52:31 from the metropolitan city.
00:52:32 - He's traumatized by his past case,
00:52:34 and he fucked up his past case,
00:52:36 and this is redemption for him.
00:52:37 - Yeah, yeah, totally, totally.
00:52:38 - And it was some woman too,
00:52:39 it was like a Phil Noir thing.
00:52:40 - Yeah, it's very much that.
00:52:44 And his character is the main thing that is unique here,
00:52:49 because it could have been just a very cliche thing,
00:52:53 and even when I saw a little bit of the trailer,
00:52:56 I thought that's what it was gonna be from Russell Crowe.
00:52:58 But I thought he brought a lot of life to it,
00:53:00 and he is easily the best part of this movie.
00:53:02 He is like 1,000% the best part,
00:53:04 and he was very committed,
00:53:05 and he never seemed like he was laughing
00:53:07 at what he was in.
00:53:08 Surprisingly, he actually found the exact right mood
00:53:12 and pitch for this, to the point where I'm like,
00:53:15 he's having fun, same time he doesn't seem like he is.
00:53:19 Yeah, at the same time,
00:53:21 it's like he's just cashing a check.
00:53:23 He actually feels like he really brought
00:53:24 a character to life here.
00:53:26 - I'd be so fascinated to know,
00:53:27 was he the first person to sign on?
00:53:31 How did all these other people,
00:53:33 'cause this has got a decent casting,
00:53:35 you have Frank O'Nero in here too.
00:53:37 Who signed on first to get the amount of talent
00:53:40 that they had at their disposal?
00:53:42 Yeah, it's like you see the ultimate thing,
00:53:45 and you're like, really?
00:53:46 All these people came together for this script?
00:53:48 This is the movie they all like?
00:53:50 We're like, nah, we gotta pack this thing.
00:53:52 - Well, even Alex Esso,
00:53:54 who's in some very phenomenal pieces of,
00:53:57 I mean, she's mainly in horror.
00:53:59 - Yeah, and she's led, she's carried movies in the past.
00:54:03 - Yeah, but even the TV show she's on now,
00:54:07 she's in "Bly Manor," she's in "Midnight Mass,"
00:54:11 and yeah, she's been in a ton of movies as well.
00:54:14 - Well, you see her and you expect her
00:54:15 to have a juicy character.
00:54:17 - Yeah, she's really giving it her all,
00:54:19 and she's doing a great job with what she's given,
00:54:22 as expected from a solid performer like her.
00:54:25 And isn't she also in "Doctor Sleep?"
00:54:29 - No, am I wrong about that?
00:54:31 - I would have to double check it,
00:54:32 but I wouldn't be surprised.
00:54:33 - And I'm pretty sure she's in "Flanagan's,"
00:54:34 she's one of "Flanagan's" actors.
00:54:36 - Yeah, "The Flanagan."
00:54:38 - Yeah, yeah, and yeah, I thought that,
00:54:43 yeah, there's no other way around it,
00:54:45 it's just another cliche, all right?
00:54:48 - Well, yeah, and the thing is--
00:54:48 - And it doesn't feel real, it just doesn't feel lived in,
00:54:51 like everything felt like a set,
00:54:53 and the worst part is,
00:54:55 it kind of just runs through the gambit of cliches too,
00:55:01 without ever trying to strike some type of tension
00:55:03 through it.
00:55:04 Like the biggest example is the first time
00:55:07 the cross is going upside down,
00:55:09 and then it pans down to Alex Esso.
00:55:11 It's just like, just throw it in there,
00:55:13 yeah, let's do it, let's just move it in there.
00:55:16 And then, yeah, you're right,
00:55:17 like some of the stunt work's really well done,
00:55:19 some of the makeup looks really good.
00:55:21 - All the technical, like the sets are good,
00:55:24 the costuming is good, the actors and the effects
00:55:27 and the CG and the--
00:55:28 - I would say the sets, definitely,
00:55:30 it always felt like I was looking at a set.
00:55:33 But I think the problem is something about the way
00:55:37 it is captured and edited and perhaps direct,
00:55:41 it doesn't bolster all those things together
00:55:44 into a synthesized whole.
00:55:46 It just feels like you've got a bunch of excellent resources
00:55:49 that I wasn't ever able to fully lose myself into.
00:55:52 Like it's luckily fun, and it's like,
00:55:54 part of the thing about "Overlord" is,
00:55:56 tropes though that movie has, it leans,
00:55:59 it embraces its B-movie-ness, its schlockness,
00:56:04 and I feel like this is maybe torn between,
00:56:07 I don't know, in the age of "The Conjuring"
00:56:08 I feel like we shouldn't be teetering on this edge,
00:56:12 but I see the imagery and the marketing and stuff,
00:56:14 and I think like, okay, this is gonna be
00:56:16 a more restrained Russell Crowe,
00:56:17 it's gonna be a bit more dramatic
00:56:18 and a bit more elevated, to use the term everyone hates.
00:56:21 And then you get inside and you're like,
00:56:24 oh no, this is much more of a fun house,
00:56:26 and I feel like they should have then perhaps
00:56:28 embraced that further, because I could feel moments
00:56:31 where it's like, no, we wanna make this
00:56:33 like a serious drama film, except we're not gonna do
00:56:35 any of that kind of pacing or scene work,
00:56:38 and we're not going to flesh much of anything out.
00:56:41 And so, yeah, it kind of flails in the middle
00:56:44 between being something that is a bit more hefty
00:56:47 and dramatic and based on a true story
00:56:49 versus something that is just wild
00:56:51 and giving you the indulgence.
00:56:52 It's like, this does have like the blasphemy that you want,
00:56:55 I think, out of any exorcist movie,
00:56:57 and I think oftentimes with a,
00:57:00 people dog the based on a true story,
00:57:02 you look at something like "The Conjuring",
00:57:04 but I think that's kind of what people want,
00:57:05 is like, you want the movie to go nuts,
00:57:07 you know, you want the movie to convince,
00:57:09 to make you wonder if it's real and then go crazy with it.
00:57:12 And this movie never really gives you the time to be like,
00:57:15 is it really, could it really just be the psychology thing?
00:57:18 Could it just be all in these people's heads?
00:57:20 You know, before you get to the point where like,
00:57:22 things are flying around, and like,
00:57:23 the second they move into the house,
00:57:25 you're like, nope, something completely supernatural
00:57:26 is happening, I know it.
00:57:27 - Yeah, it was a great setup.
00:57:29 Like, the setup with the priest character,
00:57:33 with Russell Crowe's Gabriel, that was a great setup.
00:57:36 But yeah.
00:57:37 - I feel like the whole movie is kind of a metaphor
00:57:39 for like the first time you see the diocese,
00:57:41 the house they're moving into,
00:57:42 it's like, you get this huge place
00:57:44 with like a fricking catacombs,
00:57:46 and like, you cut down there at one point,
00:57:48 and I'm like, this is part of the house, right?
00:57:50 Like, it breezes so quickly through that,
00:57:52 there's no like real moment to like,
00:57:54 walk in, take in the space, set everything up,
00:57:57 establish that atmosphere.
00:57:59 And I feel like that, you know,
00:58:00 introduction to the setting of the movie,
00:58:02 to this house, is also kind of a good analogy
00:58:05 for the rest of the movie.
00:58:06 It's like, once you walk in, you're just kind of going,
00:58:09 and you're never really taking a moment
00:58:11 to drink anything in, or sit with an idea,
00:58:14 or you know, feel the impact
00:58:16 of what these guys are going through.
00:58:17 And I feel like, you know, especially a lot of people
00:58:19 have religious backgrounds, that this stuff,
00:58:22 you don't have to go as crazy,
00:58:23 or you can, you know, entertain the, you know,
00:58:26 intellectual sides, at least a little bit,
00:58:28 'cause a lot of people struggle with those aspects of faith,
00:58:31 and superstition, and whatnot.
00:58:33 It's like, I don't think you need to make this
00:58:34 like a full-on cinema film,
00:58:37 but I feel like some of those instincts could have helped,
00:58:40 or just going, yeah, full, full, full schlock,
00:58:42 or something like that.
00:58:44 - Yeah, and that's what I meant,
00:58:45 by when I first said at the top,
00:58:47 it's at a crossroads with itself.
00:58:48 - Sure.
00:58:49 - Yeah, 'cause I lost sight of whether or not
00:58:52 this is actually self-aware,
00:58:55 'cause at first I thought it was like
00:58:56 a rock and roll playlist.
00:58:57 - And they do that motif twice,
00:59:00 and then they don't really come back to it.
00:59:02 - But then it seems like, no,
00:59:05 you, they wanna take this serious.
00:59:07 - Yeah.
00:59:08 - Yeah.
00:59:09 And it's like, they want you to--
00:59:10 - When it gets to that point,
00:59:12 I started really checking out,
00:59:13 and I just found myself less interested as it went,
00:59:18 with a couple of visual flourishes once in a while.
00:59:21 Like, whenever it reminded me it was an R-rated movie,
00:59:24 I might be a little bit more pulled in
00:59:27 for that split second.
00:59:29 - Yeah.
00:59:30 - Because there's a lot of PG-13 movies like this.
00:59:32 - Yes.
00:59:33 - And this just feels like--
00:59:35 - This is what the NUN 2 will be.
00:59:37 - The R-rated veil of it, you know?
00:59:40 - Yeah, totally.
00:59:41 - Where you could also see the PG-13 version of this,
00:59:45 because the R-ratedness of it
00:59:47 doesn't really pack a punch of,
00:59:51 until there's a couple of gore moments,
00:59:54 the R-ratedness of it just kind of feels,
00:59:58 yeah, it feels a little cheap with its dialogue,
01:00:05 of the way they go with the F-word, the vulgarity of it.
01:00:10 Sometimes it doesn't actually register to me
01:00:13 as truly demonic.
01:00:18 - No, yeah, I wouldn't say it feels truly demonic or--
01:00:21 - Or sinister.
01:00:24 It just reads like a screenplay trying hard.
01:00:29 - It feels like what a teenager would try
01:00:30 and come up with for Demon Dialogue.
01:00:32 - Yeah.
01:00:33 And so, due to that fact, yeah, I would not,
01:00:38 I am not high on this movie.
01:00:40 (laughing)
01:00:41 - It's one of those movies--
01:00:43 - I saw "S.O." up here, I thought, "Oh, maybe."
01:00:45 - This is gonna be, yeah, this might be better than expected
01:00:49 or something like that,
01:00:50 or even more than I expected in some way.
01:00:52 But yeah, this is one of those ones
01:00:55 where the initial ride is fun,
01:00:57 but I don't, and then just discovering
01:00:59 what weird wavelength this movie is on is fun,
01:01:02 but I wouldn't be compelled to be like,
01:01:04 "Add this to your 'So Bad It's Good' list,"
01:01:06 or "Add this to your 'Underrated Gems' list,"
01:01:08 or "Gotta watch this again."
01:01:09 It's like, once you've seen it, you get it.
01:01:11 There is some neat, like,
01:01:13 for particularly demonic horror like this,
01:01:17 I think there are some good set pieces and stuff.
01:01:19 There are some good images in terms of just like
01:01:21 some of the bloody, icky gags.
01:01:24 But--
01:01:25 - But, Mr. Benefit of the doubt,
01:01:26 I would say that there is nothing here
01:01:28 that is actually original.
01:01:29 - No, no, there's not like almost anything.
01:01:32 Except for maybe that--
01:01:33 - It's entirely derivative.
01:01:34 - That analogy of going, "Okay, buddy cop,
01:01:37 "but they're priests and it's exorcism."
01:01:39 Other than that--
01:01:40 - I know, they should've just leaned--
01:01:41 - They should've just embraced
01:01:43 that that's what they were doing.
01:01:44 - And that's what I'm trying to like sneak it in.
01:01:47 - Yeah, no, totally.
01:01:48 Just again, yeah, do that thing where it's like,
01:01:50 we can tell that you're not taking it too seriously
01:01:53 behind the camera, but you're playing it straight.
01:01:55 - Like lean into this alt genre that you wanna be.
01:01:59 - Yeah.
01:02:00 And that will make us more excited for the--
01:02:02 - Super priest man or whatever the fuck you're doing.
01:02:05 Or make it super priest cop dynamic.
01:02:09 - Yeah, really, really commit to it.
01:02:12 - So that we wanna see more of that happen
01:02:14 in these potential sequels, yeah.
01:02:17 - Yeah, I think that would've been way more fun
01:02:19 if they were like, "What an exorcism case is too."
01:02:23 - Yeah, too intense for--
01:02:25 - This is who you call.
01:02:26 - Yeah.
01:02:27 (laughing)
01:02:28 - The off the books exorcist.
01:02:29 - Yeah, the priest who doesn't play by the rules
01:02:32 or get along with anyone else,
01:02:33 but he's kept along because at the end of the day,
01:02:35 he gets the job done.
01:02:36 (laughing)
01:02:38 - No one knows demons like Father Gabriel.
01:02:40 - Yeah.
01:02:41 - Yeah, totally.
01:02:42 - I think there was a genuinely fun movie
01:02:45 that could've been made from this.
01:02:47 - Yeah.
01:02:48 - And they didn't.
01:02:49 - And a movie that made you care about anything.
01:02:50 - 'Cause even by the time he gets possessed
01:02:52 and then it's going through, it's just literally just,
01:02:56 it's just a checklist movie.
01:02:57 - Yeah, it's like you can see where all the beats are going,
01:03:00 except the one, like I thought the one guy
01:03:01 would get possessed, they did that with his sister instead.
01:03:04 But like, you need a heart.
01:03:06 I feel like the priests are good
01:03:08 and watching them deal with their vulnerabilities
01:03:10 and their traumas is good.
01:03:11 - They don't get to know the family.
01:03:13 - But they need the family heart.
01:03:14 - They needed to get to know the sister and the mom.
01:03:19 Like that's where your core of this is, not really.
01:03:22 - What is your relationship together?
01:03:24 - These two stoic priests and reasonably charming priests
01:03:28 getting to know each other.
01:03:29 It's, today you can't relate with those guys.
01:03:33 - No, you can't.
01:03:34 - Yeah, you need the family to humanize everything.
01:03:36 - Unless you're a priest watching this,
01:03:38 you can't relate with them.
01:03:39 - And it seems like, you know, they get in there
01:03:41 and they're mostly only focused on the,
01:03:43 like the movie's intentions and attention
01:03:46 is only focused on this demon,
01:03:47 not about like the well-being of this family
01:03:49 and what their experience is like.
01:03:51 - Or even the kid that watches.
01:03:52 Even the kid who's possessed.
01:03:54 - Like at the end, they're like,
01:03:55 and they went home and the kid was fine.
01:03:58 And I'm like, well, what is the aftermath?
01:04:00 - He doesn't even seem interested
01:04:01 in checking in on this kid.
01:04:02 - Yeah, like go see them at least
01:04:05 or give us some kind of wrap up.
01:04:06 Or yeah, like early on,
01:04:08 they should be like getting to know the family
01:04:10 so that they can understand the traumas intimately
01:04:12 as well as their relationships
01:04:14 so they can call upon specifics to use,
01:04:17 to appeal to the boy's humanity.
01:04:19 Like, yeah, it really, I think,
01:04:21 misses out especially on having tone aside,
01:04:24 there's no emotional core.
01:04:25 So you basically have the appeal of Russell Crowe
01:04:28 to hold everything together, essentially.
01:04:32 - But it's surface visuals
01:04:34 with nothing really underneath it,
01:04:36 whether that be something that is genuine,
01:04:39 like endearingly fun or genuinely scary.
01:04:43 Like there was never really a,
01:04:45 there'd be like a moment of like, oh.
01:04:47 But there was never an actual scene that was scary.
01:04:52 There was never an actual scene that was tense.
01:04:56 Never.
01:04:56 - You never feel like you're in the room
01:04:58 like beholding this nightmare.
01:05:00 Is there one scene where I'm like,
01:05:04 oh, that is an actual scary scene.
01:05:07 - Yeah.
01:05:08 - Like, oh, it's kind of creepy
01:05:10 with the nightmare on Elm Street
01:05:12 pulling him into the bed kind of vibe.
01:05:14 All right, neat.
01:05:15 - But even that could feel more impactful
01:05:17 and more like a nightmare
01:05:18 rather than like one of many random things
01:05:21 happening at this moment.
01:05:22 - No, the whole thing is just a bunch of randomness
01:05:24 and like throwing people into shit.
01:05:28 But even the way it's captured
01:05:31 is not done with any sense of like self,
01:05:35 I'm talking about the way they use the camera work
01:05:38 with this is not done with any type of self-awareness.
01:05:40 Like even if it is derivative,
01:05:42 you could kind of use a bit of a Phil Lord
01:05:46 and Chris Miller touch or Edgar Wright touch
01:05:48 to have some of that self-awareness
01:05:51 of what you're doing here so you can have an energy.
01:05:54 Like last night in Soho,
01:05:56 there was a lot of derivativeness in that, you know?
01:05:59 But there is such, but there's uniqueness too as well.
01:06:03 Like Edgar Wright is actually the perfect example,
01:06:05 I think for this,
01:06:06 of someone who like knows a genre,
01:06:08 really leans into the genre tropes,
01:06:10 but then also does a lot of unique things.
01:06:12 And that's what this needed
01:06:13 was to have that sense of awareness.
01:06:16 Or even James Wan,
01:06:17 like actual, we've been conjuring this whole time,
01:06:20 but like malignant kind of does that, you know?
01:06:22 - Yeah, totally.
01:06:23 And this misses that mark too,
01:06:25 because this feel, like malignant is half of an action movie
01:06:28 crashed into a horror movie.
01:06:29 And this felt like they got a horror movie pack
01:06:33 of aesthetics and just directed it
01:06:35 like a 90 minute action movie.
01:06:36 - Yeah.
01:06:37 - Like a 90 minute action comedy.
01:06:39 - Yeah, all right.
01:06:41 Can you close this out?
01:06:42 - Yeah, guys.
01:06:43 - But it's Spark Noah,
01:06:44 I didn't even want to like talk about it.
01:06:45 - Not Spark Noah.
01:06:46 - I didn't even want to like talk about it.
01:06:48 When it was all said and done,
01:06:49 I was like, I want to turn off the camera on board.
01:06:52 - Not as great as the sum of its parts, unfortunately.
01:06:55 But guys, who's your favorite exorcist?
01:06:57 Have you read any of these books and are they good?
01:07:00 Let us know.
