O técnico de 52 anos chega a Belo Horizonte sob desconfianças da torcida celeste devido ao último trabalho realizado. No Shimizu S-Pulse, do Japão, foi rebaixado e acabou demitido com o clube na 19ª colocação da Segunda Divisão do país.  Zé Ricardo explicou o desempenho ruim no futebol japonês e pediu confiança da torcida do Cruzeiro no início do trabalho. Sucessor do português Pepa, o carioca tem a missão de fazer com que a Raposa retome o caminho das vitórias no Campeonato Brasileiro. Faltam 16 rodadas para o fim da competição, e o time está na 12ª colocação da tabela, com 26 pontos, cinco acima da zona do rebaixamento.  “O momento no Japão era distinto, uma cultura nova. O clube já tinha uma situação bem complicada de pontuação quando cheguei. Conseguimos recuperar bem, mas não foi o suficiente para atingir o objetivo lá.
