Narcissistic Personality Disorder, otherwise known as NPD is a personality disorder characterized by grandiosity. We may see it in people who have inflated self-esteem with little regard for others. It is important to note that NPD is a psychiatric condition and is more complex than simply being arrogant. The condition causes much distress to the people with it and to the people around them. In this video, we hope to shed some light on the condition, and signs that a person should seek help.

00:02 Hey Psych2Go family, and welcome back to another video.
00:09 Narcissistic personality disorder, or NPD,
00:14 is a personality disorder characterized by grandiosity.
00:18 You may see it in people who have an inflated ego
00:20 with little regard for others.
00:22 It's important to note that NPD is a psychiatric condition
00:26 and is more complex than simply being arrogant.
00:29 It's distressing for those who have it
00:31 and to those around them.
00:32 We hope to shed some light on the condition
00:34 and signs that a person should seek help.
00:37 But before we begin, we would like to mention
00:39 that this video is created for educational purposes only
00:42 and is not intended to substitute a professional diagnosis.
00:45 If you suspect that someone or you
00:46 may have narcissistic personality disorder
00:49 or any mental health condition,
00:50 we highly advise you seek help
00:52 from a qualified mental health professional.
00:54 Now, let's begin.
00:56 What is NPD?
00:59 While much of TV and movies portray narcissism
01:02 as people who feel like they're better than everyone else,
01:04 it's usually not just the case.
01:07 NPD is a personality disorder
01:09 in which the person feels self-important
01:11 and craves constant validation.
01:14 Their feelings of superiority
01:15 often hint at a deeper problem,
01:18 as their need for validation often comes
01:19 from a place of insecurity and instability
01:22 rather than genuine self-love,
01:25 which they may not be aware of.
01:27 So what causes NPD?
01:29 While the cause of NPD is unknown,
01:32 researchers believe that it has to do
01:34 with a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
01:37 It's believed that 6% of people have this disorder
01:41 and that men have a higher chance
01:42 of this disorder than women.
01:44 Some believe that NPD is developed to cope with trauma
01:47 and feelings of inadequacy.
01:49 Others believe it may be learned in early childhood
01:52 from dealing with anything
01:53 from abuse to excessive pampering.
01:55 There's even a debate as to how much of the disorder
01:58 is passed down from parent to child
02:00 versus from environmental factors
02:02 that lead to the child acquiring the disorder.
02:05 What are the signs and symptoms?
02:08 Feelings of grandiosity,
02:10 where they feel that they're superior to others,
02:12 and low empathy are often seen in those with NPD.
02:16 They don't care much for others
02:17 except to receive constant validation.
02:20 People with NPD feel as though they're entitled
02:22 to whatever they want,
02:24 which can be dangerous
02:25 as it can manifest into toxic relationships.
02:28 They may manipulate others to get what they want.
02:31 They brag and exaggerate their achievements
02:33 or feel envious of anyone that outperforms them.
02:36 But deep down, the person with NPD
02:39 may be really dealing with their own feelings of inadequacy.
02:42 How do I know to get help?
02:45 People with NPD may not seek help for the disorder itself
02:49 as they may not know that there's an issue.
02:51 Usually, people are diagnosed
02:53 because they seek treatment for other issues,
02:55 such as depression or addiction.
02:57 However, people who feel that they may have the condition
03:00 are urged to reach out for help.
03:03 NPD and the underlying feelings of inadequacy can be treated.
03:07 It not only benefits the individual,
03:09 but also the people around them.
03:11 What treatment options are available?
03:14 People diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder
03:17 will most likely work with a therapist
03:19 using psychotherapy methods.
03:21 Other self-improving activities,
03:22 such as exercise and hobbies,
03:24 may be used in conjunction with therapy.
03:26 It's important to know that treatment is available
03:29 and that life can be made more manageable.
