Antisocial personality disorder is a mental condition in which a person has a lasting pattern of manipulating, exploiting or violating the rights of others without any remorse and it is linked to sociopathy. While only 3% of men and 1% of women suffer from this disorder in the US according to PsychologyToday, it is important for us to discuss it. In our previous video, we talked about what Antisocial Personality Disorder really is, so today, we want to look deeper into the signs of antisocial personality disorder.

00:17 As a quick disclaimer,
00:18 this video is made for educational purposes
00:20 and is not meant to provide
00:21 any kind of professional diagnosis
00:23 for antisocial personality disorder.
00:26 Please seek help from a mental health professional
00:28 if you think you or someone else
00:29 could be suffering from this disorder.
00:31 With that being said, let's begin.
00:34 Antisocial personality disorder is a mental disorder
00:37 in which a person shows no regard for right and wrong
00:40 and tends to antagonize, manipulate,
00:42 or threat others harshly.
00:44 They can be charming at first,
00:45 but have a widespread disregard for others
00:47 and show little remorse for their behavior.
00:50 So here are eight signs of antisocial personality disorder.
00:54 One, they misunderstand social interactions.
00:57 People with antisocial personality disorder
01:00 have a skewed social compass.
01:02 They process social interactions
01:04 and your social signals differently.
01:06 They might misinterpret things that are said.
01:08 For example, they hear insults or mockery when there is none,
01:12 which brings us to the next point.
01:14 Two, they're prone to hostility.
01:16 When someone has antisocial personality disorder,
01:19 they often feel that others have wronged them,
01:21 even when no one actually has.
01:23 They will read between the lines
01:25 when they interact with you
01:26 and hear something completely different
01:28 than what you actually said.
01:29 They might be distressed and on edge,
01:31 causing them to lash out with hostility and anger.
01:34 In extreme cases, they might even seek revenge
01:37 for the perceived wrongs against them,
01:39 whether the insult is real or imagined.
01:41 Three, they can be very manipulative.
01:44 People with antisocial personality disorder
01:46 can repel against others.
01:48 Others might struggle to communicate and connect with them.
01:51 And to make things worse,
01:52 people with this personality disorder
01:54 are also prone to misreading other's signals,
01:57 which can cause a lot of misunderstandings
01:58 in the relationship.
02:00 To overcome this,
02:01 they become skilled at charm and manipulation.
02:04 For example, they manipulate you
02:05 into spending time with them,
02:07 or they may exploit you and con you to get what they want,
02:10 even if it's just for their own personal gratification.
02:13 Four, they have a tendency to lie.
02:16 Along with manipulation comes a tendency to lie,
02:19 and their lies are often used to blame others.
02:22 Lying is a tool they can use for personal gain.
02:25 To someone with antisocial personality disorder,
02:28 the survival of a relationship is vital,
02:30 as long as it continues to serve their needs or desires.
02:33 And deceit is just one of the tactics
02:35 they use to achieve that.
02:37 Five, they are very impulsive.
02:40 Impulsivity is a common factor
02:41 in the makeup of antisocial personality disorder.
02:45 They act on less reservation,
02:47 like there is nothing to hold them back.
02:49 They have very little regard
02:50 for the consequences of their actions,
02:52 and disregard their own safety or the safety of others.
02:55 Their extreme impulsivity often ends in dire consequences,
02:59 such as being hospitalized or serving jail time.
03:02 Six, they indulge in repeated risky behavior.
03:05 Their impulsive nature leads them to make snap decisions,
03:08 which might not turn out well for them.
03:10 For example, they might get involved in criminal activity,
03:14 such as theft or arson.
03:16 They might have problems with drug and alcohol use.
03:19 Their disregard for right and wrong,
03:21 and low moral standards,
03:22 leads them to make bad, risky decisions,
03:24 often for little reward.
03:26 Seven, they have little remorse
03:28 for their behaviors and actions.
03:30 Someone who has antisocial personality disorder
03:33 will do whatever they can to achieve what they want,
03:36 even when their behavior and actions can hurt people.
03:39 They have very little to no remorse for hurting,
03:41 offending, or inconveniencing others.
03:44 They do what they want for their own gain,
03:46 and lack empathy for others.
03:48 Eight, they blame others.
03:50 They also have a habit
03:52 of putting the blame off on other people.
03:54 Because they struggle to take responsibility
03:56 for their own harmful behavior,
03:58 they may rationalize their actions
04:00 by blaming those they hurt.
04:01 They might think the other person deserved it,
04:04 or have a mindset of, "That's just the way life is."
04:07 They refuse to see the repercussions of their actions,
04:10 and put the blame on others instead.
04:12 Do you think you, or someone you know,
04:14 could have antisocial personality disorder?
04:17 If so, we encourage you to seek help
04:19 from a mental health professional.
