00:01 - Hi Vogue, I'm Cindy Crawford.
00:03 - I'm Christy Turlington.
00:04 - I'm Naomi Campbell.
00:06 - I'm Linda Evangelista, and this is Behind the Shoot.
00:09 [upbeat music]
00:12 [upbeat music]
00:22 - My reaction when I was asked to be part
00:25 of the September cover shoot was,
00:27 is this really happening, just to get us all together,
00:31 shooting with Edward and Anna,
00:34 overjoyed would be the word.
00:35 - To come back together for Vogue,
00:38 on a cover, was super exciting.
00:40 - One of the things that I love about the fashion industry
00:43 is these friendships from people all over the world.
00:47 You know, not only Christy, Linda, and Naomi,
00:49 but you know, the hair, the makeup, Edward,
00:52 it really is like your second family.
00:55 - You know, we discussed our children,
00:57 what we're doing, it's just always great to catch up.
01:00 - We get there, we've forgotten that we have to work.
01:03 [upbeat music]
01:05 - The inspiration for the shoot was to show the girls
01:11 as they were now, in their lives.
01:12 We weren't recreating images from the 90s,
01:15 they're not supposed to be who they were when they were 21,
01:18 it's who they are now, and we wanted to sort of show it
01:20 through the lens of joy.
01:22 The atmosphere on the shoot is electric,
01:24 everybody's having fun, the music is blasting,
01:27 you have a whole generation from the 90s,
01:30 and all these young assistants on set.
01:33 I mean, to watch Linda working, to watch Naomi moving,
01:37 to watch Cindy posing, Christy, that eternal glow,
01:41 it's a really special day, I think it's one of those shoots
01:43 nobody in there will forget for a while.
01:46 Today we're shooting with Rafael Pavarotti,
01:48 a young photographer, not even 30 years old, from Brazil.
01:52 There's a very sort of relaxed vibe,
01:56 it's kind of adding to a nuance of the day,
01:58 and sort of trying to meet Raf where he is,
02:02 and for him to also sort of embrace what we represent,
02:06 so there's just like a nice thing happening
02:08 with the energy and vibe on the set.
02:10 - So far I've done one picture, and I have to say,
02:16 I had so much fun, and when he said we had it,
02:18 I was like, oh no, already over?
02:21 - Edward, I've known for years,
02:23 he's a great combination of sweetheart,
02:26 but also he loves fashion, and he loves making fashion,
02:30 and he just brings that enthusiasm and that excitement.
02:33 - I trust Edward, and I trust Raf, that's really it.
02:37 I didn't have any questions because I trust.
02:48 - When Naomi, Cindy, Linda, and Christy came along,
02:51 they really fulfilled people's fantasies,
02:54 the idea of what a vogue model is.
02:56 You saw them in videos for George Michael,
02:58 you saw them on catwalks,
03:00 you saw them with these incredibly famous sort of boyfriends,
03:04 but they also represented their generation.
03:06 The whole new generation was coming up in the 90s,
03:08 sort of very different from the 80s.
03:10 So you know, yes, they really were the girls,
03:13 all the girls wanted to be, you know?
03:15 And they were all so different, right?
03:18 - I've known these ladies for most of my life at this point.
03:22 There is something about our early years
03:25 that really felt very joyful and very celebratory.
03:29 Even though life was certainly not perfect,
03:32 when you look back, there is a sense of fun.
03:35 - Back in the day, we didn't do like one show a day.
03:39 We had them packed in their bumper to bumper.
03:42 It can feel lonely up on that runway,
03:44 so to pass someone, it's always reassuring.
03:48 You just don't feel so alone.
03:51 - We were allowed to show our personalities.
03:54 Our personalities is part of us
03:56 that makes us all our individual characters.
03:58 I'm blessed that I came at that time.
04:00 I wouldn't have wanted to come at another time.
04:02 - People only saw this two-dimensional picture of us,
04:06 and then for me to, you know, be able to be silly,
04:08 or we were all on House of Style,
04:10 like people got to know us a little bit.
04:13 - Vogue asked Peter Lindbergh to do a cover
04:16 that, you know, kind of defined the '90s woman,
04:19 like who is this new '90s woman?
04:21 Peter said, "It's not just one woman.
04:24 "It's more about diversity."
04:25 And obviously, we've come a long way since then,
04:28 but even at that time, this idea to have five
04:31 different-looking women,
04:32 but we somehow all look good together, photographed,
04:35 and I think we were all wearing pretty much our own jeans.
04:38 - And then Giorgio Sant'Angelo,
04:40 wrapped tops, we were on the street in Tribeca.
04:43 We got ready in a motorhome just on the corner.
04:47 - We were on the middle of the street in,
04:50 where were we?
04:51 Under the Brooklyn Bridge or something.
04:53 - We all felt, I think, very much ourselves in that moment.
04:57 - We all loved working with Peter.
04:59 It was relaxed.
05:00 - The thing about Peter that I really appreciate,
05:02 probably more now than I did then,
05:05 is he just really celebrated me,
05:07 and I think that's what he really did then,
05:09 is he just really celebrated women,
05:12 but also your individuality.
05:14 - It's sort of, I'd say, the beginning of
05:17 what this era kind of represents.
05:20 - I didn't think it would have that reaction.
05:22 I didn't think a video would come from it.
05:24 I didn't think George Michael would be calling.
05:26 I didn't think any of that.
05:27 - Never knew at the time doing that cover
05:30 that it would turn out to be the phenomenon
05:33 that it turned out to be,
05:35 and that's what I was excited to,
05:37 and how it would change our careers.
05:39 - Tatiana, who's not with us today,
05:44 I met her before anyone in the group.
05:46 The sad thing is, we have lost so many people in our lives,
05:51 and oftentimes we connect when we hear of some horrible news.
05:57 These are people that we worked with for so long,
06:00 and so when anyone goes,
06:02 you know, it's a moment to kind of reminisce
06:04 about those experiences.
06:06 - Remembering the Peter Lindbergh shoot,
06:11 there's two other Vogues that were special to me.
06:14 First was the French Vogue.
06:15 I had no idea at the time when I shot that French Vogue
06:18 that I was the first woman of color to ever be on it.
06:21 And British Vogue.
06:23 That was also a very important moment for me,
06:26 being British and being the first
06:28 Black British model on the cover.
06:30 The most important changes for me that I've seen
06:33 and advocated for is being diverse and inclusive.
06:37 And finally, we're at a place where I can say
06:40 things are moving in a great direction.
06:42 - The world puts a lot of pressure, obviously,
06:48 on women as they age.
06:50 We still can have fun.
06:52 We can still be beautiful.
06:53 We can still be visible.
06:56 - This Vogue cover is a celebration of that,
06:59 a celebration of our careers.
07:02 - We're still here.
07:03 We can still model.
07:05 - It's really the icing on the cake
07:07 for this whole journey that we've been on.
07:09 - I hope this cover speaks to everyone,
07:12 to all the people that have been supportive to us
07:15 from the '90s, to all the people that have followed us,
07:18 to all the women out there,
07:20 to show that age is a number and it doesn't mean anything.
07:25 Today, you are who you are as an individual.
07:29 - We're women.
07:30 We were women then, but we were young women then.
07:32 And we're fully women in our power, in our bodies,
07:36 not going anywhere.
07:37 And maybe we'll be back in 35, 40 years again.
