As the offseason descends into a deafening silence, let's pause for a moment and celebrate "the Jays", Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, for their contributions both on and off the court. What does Adam Silver's memo to the league mean for a potential Damian Lillard trade with the Heat? We also dive into Sam Hauser's potential and whether a leap is possible.

00:00:02 (upbeat music)
00:00:05 - Who is gonna be first to the floor here?
00:00:15 And it is Marcus Smart as he usually is.
00:00:18 - The first round drives.
00:00:19 - Go way up on the ground.
00:00:20 - That's not the first time we've seen a superstar
00:00:23 in many ways sacrifice a body.
00:00:25 - Garnett knocked away.
00:00:27 (crowd cheering)
00:00:30 (upbeat music)
00:00:33 - Welcome in to another episode of First to the Floor.
00:00:37 Ben Ballas here, thank you for joining us.
00:00:39 Hope you're doing well.
00:00:39 We've got a pretty spicy one for you tonight.
00:00:42 I think given where we're at in the off season,
00:00:44 there will be another classic edition
00:00:46 of the Shard and Fretter Report.
00:00:48 We will be frothing over the Jays a bit
00:00:50 because they are awesome and we love them so very, very much.
00:00:53 There has been some ruster news, some gallo comments.
00:00:56 So there's plenty, plenty to get to.
00:00:58 Alongside me as always, it's Mr. Wayne Spooney.
00:01:01 Spooney, how you doing man?
00:01:03 Welcome back.
00:01:03 - I'm doing good.
00:01:04 Who cares about me, man?
00:01:06 Come on, we got somebody else here
00:01:08 who hasn't been on forever.
00:01:10 - Well said, we're very happy to welcome back
00:01:12 the man with the mistress, hot take, Jake Eisenberg.
00:01:15 Good to see you, Jake.
00:01:16 Welcome back, man.
00:01:17 How you doing?
00:01:18 How's the jet lag?
00:01:19 - Fellas, we're back.
00:01:22 The jet lag is full on.
00:01:26 40 plus hours to get back from the beach in Albania
00:01:30 to the tip of the world in Tasmania, Australia.
00:01:35 So rising the last two mornings has felt
00:01:39 like my body weight is 10X what it usually is.
00:01:42 But I get up, Ben's like, "You ready to upload these clips?"
00:01:46 Stream's ready to go and I'm like, "You're damn right."
00:01:49 Jumps out of bed, steaming shower.
00:01:51 No, we're good.
00:01:52 We're feeling good.
00:01:53 We're excited.
00:01:55 - Honestly, just to start it off,
00:01:57 like I listened, I tried to tap in where possible
00:01:59 across the off season, but I listened to the last one
00:02:03 or watched the last one on the balcony in Albania
00:02:06 and just get myself hyped up.
00:02:08 And I just wanted to say, like, this podcast is great.
00:02:13 Like I clearly am biased here,
00:02:16 but if you're listening to the podcast,
00:02:17 I'm sure you at least somewhat agree
00:02:20 that this is a pretty good show.
00:02:21 But I was like listening and I was legit proud
00:02:25 to be part of the crew.
00:02:26 And I was looking out into the horizon,
00:02:28 just getting hyped up to talk about the Jays,
00:02:31 the Celtics, and be back with Spoonie and Ben,
00:02:33 the fellas, and Jackson and Joe.
00:02:35 So yeah, I'm stoked.
00:02:36 I'm ready to roll.
00:02:38 - I love it, Mandy.
00:02:39 Too kind.
00:02:40 I was wondering why those Albania numbers
00:02:41 in the analytics were popping up there.
00:02:43 So very glad to see that you enjoyed the pod.
00:02:46 What was the highlight of your trip?
00:02:49 - I think it was Albania.
00:02:50 Getting to the mountains in a little town called Teth.
00:02:54 Hiking four or five hours a day
00:02:57 into some places called like the Blue Eyes Lagoon,
00:02:59 Valbone, really, really fun.
00:03:03 And I'll say in a Spoonie before we hopped on,
00:03:05 it kind of feels like I got there
00:03:06 before tourism's really hit it.
00:03:09 Like they have enough infrastructure
00:03:11 to support a little bit of tourism,
00:03:13 but it's, I feel like five, 10 years
00:03:16 before it really, really ramps up.
00:03:17 A lot of like half finished buildings,
00:03:20 half finished restaurants.
00:03:22 So that was really cool.
00:03:23 And like, I'm a big hiker and nature person
00:03:26 and the mountains there were pretty spectacular
00:03:29 up in the Albanian Alps.
00:03:30 So that's definitely the highlight for sure.
00:03:32 - Yeah, I noticed you saw Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
00:03:35 So they're frolicking around the mountains there,
00:03:36 the goats.
00:03:37 - Dude, so many goats.
00:03:39 Tom Brady, Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum.
00:03:41 I didn't get too close
00:03:43 'cause I did see some goats fighting from the balcony,
00:03:48 just like doing that.
00:03:49 Like they get up high and they go.
00:03:51 And then come down low, headbutt each other.
00:03:54 So I was careful to not to go too close
00:03:58 to the Jaylens and Jasons of Albania,
00:04:00 but just close enough to get some good content
00:04:02 for the timeline.
00:04:03 - The Marcus Smart goats out there taking charges.
00:04:07 - Yeah, the Derek White goat just leading the goats in blocks
00:04:12 - Wearing a Memphis jersey, doing a double take.
00:04:16 Now look, obviously very, very happy
00:04:21 to have Jake back and the crew back together.
00:04:24 And obviously shout out to Joe and Jackson
00:04:27 and the full crew there on,
00:04:29 I was gonna say the Celtics Reddit podcast,
00:04:30 the First of the Floor podcast.
00:04:32 Before we get to it,
00:04:33 and if you're not about housekeeping,
00:04:35 if you're a podcast listener,
00:04:36 fast forward 30, 45 seconds here, some housekeeping.
00:04:40 We've got some asks of you, the listener.
00:04:43 First of all, mailbag queues.
00:04:44 You can get us at firstofthefloor18@gmail.com
00:04:49 or in the YouTube comments or Twitter or whatever.
00:04:51 We want your mailbag questions.
00:04:53 I think we're finally getting to the point
00:04:54 where we have the confidence to ask listeners.
00:04:56 Like we think we've got a big enough listener base
00:04:58 to ask for mailbag questions.
00:05:00 Let us know, it's the off season, we need topics,
00:05:02 we need questions.
00:05:03 Let us know what you've got
00:05:04 and we'd be more than happy to address those on the podcast.
00:05:07 Also next week, we're hitting trivia.
00:05:09 We're starting round one of trivia
00:05:11 with the First of the Floor crew.
00:05:12 And then we're gonna bring in some
00:05:13 of our Celtics media friends for this trivia segment,
00:05:17 which will hopefully last a couple of weeks
00:05:19 and bridge the gap between now and media day.
00:05:21 Let us know your trivia question ideas,
00:05:23 your trivia segment or category ideas.
00:05:26 We've been running trivia off and on for the last few years
00:05:29 and like you do start to exhaust ideas after a little while.
00:05:32 So your input would be greatly appreciated.
00:05:34 Also, we're cutting up a new intro for the podcast,
00:05:37 Marcus Smart.
00:05:38 He features heavily in the intro.
00:05:40 While we wanna keep him around,
00:05:42 we kinda need to shift the focal point a little bit.
00:05:44 So if you've got any ideas for like First of the Floor
00:05:47 style gritty blips from Celtics history,
00:05:51 let us know, we'd love to hear your suggestions there.
00:05:53 Also, playback.
00:05:55 If you're not part of our playback room,
00:05:56 playback.tv/firstofthefloor,
00:05:59 where we have watch parties, usually for live games.
00:06:02 During the off season,
00:06:03 between now and when the season starts,
00:06:04 we're gonna hold a couple of watch parties for legacy games
00:06:08 and a few options here.
00:06:09 So League Pass has watchable games going back to like 2007.
00:06:14 For example, a good option there
00:06:15 would be Isaiah Thomas's 53 points on the Wizards
00:06:18 in game three in the 2017 playoffs.
00:06:21 Also, any full game on YouTube is also streamable
00:06:24 from a watch party perspective.
00:06:26 So the Celtics comeback against the Nets in 2002,
00:06:29 that's on YouTube.
00:06:30 That'd be a great option as well.
00:06:31 If you've got any suggestions for games
00:06:34 that we should watch as part of a watch party,
00:06:36 let us know as well.
00:06:37 You can find us, like I said,
00:06:39 at firstofthefloor18@gmail.com,
00:06:41 which is in the comments there.
00:06:42 Thanks to whichever one of you guys did that.
00:06:45 You can also get us @firstofthefloor on Twitter,
00:06:47 @WSpoonie if you wanna hit up Spoonie
00:06:49 or @JakeEisenberg as well.
00:06:51 And finally, Thursday night,
00:06:53 Green Runs Deep, Celtics super fan,
00:06:56 social media influencer, all around good guy.
00:06:59 I've only ever had extremely positive reactions
00:07:02 with this guy.
00:07:03 He's coming on the podcast Thursday night.
00:07:05 That's gonna be live here on our YouTube channel.
00:07:08 So check that out.
00:07:10 Okay, let's get into the meat of this podcast
00:07:13 and some news that broke between last night
00:07:16 when I finalized the run sheet
00:07:18 and today when we're starting the podcast.
00:07:20 Shams has this report.
00:07:21 The Boston Celtics have weighed guard/forward
00:07:24 Justin Champagny, sources tell The Athletic.
00:07:27 Champagny was signed to a multi-year deal
00:07:29 out of the NBA G League last season.
00:07:31 Now, some details here, guys.
00:07:33 Brad Stevens, he had to make a decision on Champagny
00:07:36 because he was not on the roster,
00:07:38 or if he was on the roster after today, I should say,
00:07:41 then he was guaranteed 50K, a nice chunk of change there.
00:07:44 So we'll get to some cap implications in a second,
00:07:48 but Jake, you're fresh, you're back from Albania.
00:07:51 I wanna throw to you first your take
00:07:53 on the waving of Justin Champagny
00:07:55 as we get straight into the off-season deep cuts here.
00:07:58 - I'm sure Justin Champagny's a great guy.
00:08:01 It's unfortunate that we don't,
00:08:03 that Brad wasn't able to finagle his twin brother
00:08:05 onto the roster.
00:08:06 He seems like the superior.
00:08:08 I will say, because he is a twin
00:08:12 and my PTSD from the conference finals,
00:08:15 I'm just like, he better not end up on the heat
00:08:18 and just turn into,
00:08:20 'cause the idea of Champagny was good,
00:08:22 6'6", scoring guy, but he was really bad,
00:08:27 I thought, pretty much every time he stepped on the court
00:08:30 for the Celtics, both in garbage time and in summer league.
00:08:35 I was screaming at my iPad at 6 a.m. in France,
00:08:40 oh, England, sorry, and being like,
00:08:42 "Can we get Champagny off the court here?"
00:08:44 He's just taking up shots for Walshie.
00:08:47 I thought it was a pretty rough showing for him
00:08:49 in summer league, outside of one game
00:08:52 when Channing Frye, I thought he was an absolute wedge,
00:08:54 'cause I love the way that he rebounds.
00:08:56 I'm like, "Channing Frye."
00:08:57 - His own misses?
00:08:59 - Yeah, his own.
00:08:59 (laughing)
00:09:00 Yeah, just, yeah, this was the correct decision for sure.
00:09:04 And now they have $4.19 million to offer to FreeAgentX
00:09:09 at some point in the future.
00:09:12 - Yeah, he's, I may have said this before,
00:09:16 but I'm gonna reuse a joke because, you know, why not?
00:09:19 I don't remember saying it, but he's like,
00:09:22 if you used to be able to pick your play style in 2K,
00:09:26 and if you picked all-arounder,
00:09:28 you were like a 65 who was just not terrible at anything,
00:09:32 but also good at absolutely nothing, that's champagne.
00:09:36 It's the wrong approach.
00:09:37 - He'd probably be like a superstar in, you know,
00:09:39 Europe or something like that, but he's just not,
00:09:42 none of his skills are an NBA level skill.
00:09:46 Maybe wide open threes,
00:09:48 but that's obviously not gonna be enough.
00:09:49 He's just like, he's not horrible at anything,
00:09:53 but he's not good at anything.
00:09:54 And when you're looking for deep role players,
00:09:56 you want extreme strengths and weaknesses
00:09:59 because it's like, okay, then I know
00:10:01 you're a great offensive rebounder.
00:10:03 All right, this game calls for a good offensive rebounder.
00:10:05 We'll put you in.
00:10:06 You're an elite, elite three-point shooter like Sam Hauser.
00:10:09 You can build like your offensive skill
00:10:12 around elite three-point shooting.
00:10:14 He's just like, meh at everything.
00:10:16 And there's just not really a role for that.
00:10:18 And I'll be interested to see what we do with two,
00:10:21 two open spots and a little bit of wiggle room
00:10:23 under that apron and things getting a little spicy.
00:10:25 Brad, ruthless, doesn't even hit this guy up with 50K,
00:10:29 which is like nothing to NBA money.
00:10:31 - Yeah.
00:10:32 - Well, that's the second apron.
00:10:33 Every dollar counts, every 50K counts.
00:10:36 So like you said, Spoonie, two standard roster spots
00:10:38 now open, please.
00:10:40 Blake Griffin, consume one of those spots.
00:10:42 And there's that one two-way spot remaining as well.
00:10:45 We've got the $6.2 million traded player exception.
00:10:48 And like you said, Jake, 4.19 mil
00:10:51 under that second apron now.
00:10:53 We're already a wiggle under that apron.
00:10:56 And now we've just got a little bit more wiggle room.
00:10:58 So it'll be interesting to see what happens.
00:11:00 I don't necessarily think that this is indicative
00:11:02 of like an imminent move.
00:11:03 It was just more along the lines of that deadline
00:11:06 of saving 50K.
00:11:08 And like we said, every dollar matters.
00:11:11 Anything else on, like, do we need to do the farewell?
00:11:14 We probably don't, right?
00:11:15 (laughing)
00:11:17 - My biggest memory from Champagney is Miami Heat, Celtics,
00:11:22 game five, Celtics blow out the Heat by like 20.
00:11:25 And then Champagne's part of the cleanup crew
00:11:28 and he's kind of a disaster.
00:11:29 And then it gets down to like 10 with like a minute to go.
00:11:33 And everybody starts like freaking out,
00:11:36 sphincters tightening, and then Howser hits like a bomb
00:11:39 from the logo and the game's over.
00:11:41 But that's like what sticks out to me
00:11:43 from the Champagne experience is like,
00:11:45 he couldn't even handle cleanup crew.
00:11:48 But great hair.
00:11:50 - True, great hair, always helps.
00:11:53 You've got to have something
00:11:54 when you're at that end of the bench.
00:11:55 All right, let's get to a quick word
00:11:57 from our sponsor before we move on.
00:11:59 The CLNS Media Network is powered by FanDuel.
00:12:02 Sign up at fanduel.com/boston
00:12:05 and get in on the action with $200
00:12:07 in bonus bets guaranteed.
00:12:09 - Ooh yeah, baseball season is in full swing
00:12:13 and there's no better place to get in on the action
00:12:15 than FanDuel, America's number one sports book
00:12:17 because right now new customers get a no sweat first bet
00:12:21 up to $1,000.
00:12:22 That's up to $1,000 back in bonus bets.
00:12:25 If your first bet doesn't win,
00:12:26 just go to fanduel.com/boston to join today.
00:12:31 Now in typical first to the floor fashion,
00:12:34 while you should absolutely and responsibly so
00:12:36 go and bet on the very much ongoing baseball season,
00:12:40 we've got a couple of stats here from FanDuel
00:12:43 with regards to the upcoming NBA season.
00:12:47 Can you guys guess, either one of you,
00:12:49 who the favorite is to win the NBA championship
00:12:53 as per this very moment per FanDuel?
00:12:56 - It's the Boston Celtics, isn't it?
00:12:59 - Yes, because I have it written down on the run sheet.
00:13:01 - That's right.
00:13:01 (laughing)
00:13:02 - Amazing.
00:13:03 (laughing)
00:13:05 - Plus 470, plus 470 to win the whole thing.
00:13:09 Best overall odds, which is great.
00:13:10 Scoot Henderson, plus 430, not the overall favorite.
00:13:15 I think ranked third behind Wemby and...
00:13:19 - Chet.
00:13:20 - Chet, thank you.
00:13:21 I was gonna say the skinny guy from OKC,
00:13:23 Chet Holmgren, thank you.
00:13:25 Plus 430, that's a good bet.
00:13:28 Again, gamble responsibly.
00:13:30 But I don't think Wemby, and this is not a hot take,
00:13:33 he's not gonna play, I think, that many games this year
00:13:36 as the Spurs try and ramp him up
00:13:38 to be who they hope he can be.
00:13:40 Scoot at plus 430, I think I'm gonna get on that.
00:13:44 Any thoughts, guys?
00:13:45 - I'm getting on Chet at plus 380.
00:13:48 I'm like all aboard the Thunder hype train.
00:13:52 I placed a bet.
00:13:54 I think the Thunder are plus 7,000 to win the West.
00:13:58 Yeah, I think that they're gonna...
00:14:02 - Hedge that.
00:14:02 - I think that, hey, all they gotta do
00:14:04 is win like one series and I can start hedging that
00:14:08 to plus money.
00:14:09 I think the Thunder are gonna be really good.
00:14:11 The only thing they were missing last year
00:14:13 was like a center.
00:14:15 They had other Jalen Williams at 6'9"
00:14:19 playing the big man role.
00:14:21 Chet, I think is gonna be really good.
00:14:22 I think he's gonna be better than Wemby out the gate.
00:14:24 It's pretty easily, I think defensively,
00:14:26 Wemby and Chet might be on the same level,
00:14:28 but Chet's a far more ready to go offensive player,
00:14:31 I think, than Wemby.
00:14:34 - That's why I like the Scoot bet
00:14:36 because Rookie of the Year tends like six man
00:14:39 to be an offensive award.
00:14:40 I think both those guys will have a bigger impact
00:14:43 than Scoot does on winning,
00:14:44 but Scoot's gonna get shots and he's gonna get assists.
00:14:48 And I think his box score numbers might look...
00:14:51 Maybe he won't get assists
00:14:52 'cause I don't know who he's gonna be.
00:14:53 - Well, I guess if Dame isn't traded-
00:14:55 - I was gonna say, well, maybe he's not gonna get shots.
00:14:58 - But assuming Dame is traded somewhere
00:15:00 or doesn't play, who knows?
00:15:02 But I think Scoot's gonna have the massive usage,
00:15:04 which I think can go a long way to win a Rookie of the Year.
00:15:07 So all three of those guys, you can't really go wrong.
00:15:10 - Brandon Miller might be like the value pick at 1500
00:15:13 'cause everybody's kind of like off him now,
00:15:15 but he talked about usage.
00:15:16 I think him and LaMelo are gonna be
00:15:18 a shot-chucking masterclass by Brandon Miller and LaMelo.
00:15:23 - Yeah, absolutely.
00:15:24 Gonna be interesting.
00:15:25 Get on that, folks.
00:15:26 In the meantime, let's get into the Shard and Frodo report.
00:15:30 - Shard and Frodo.
00:15:30 - The Sixers.
00:15:31 - Shard and Frodo.
00:15:33 - The Lakers.
00:15:33 - Shard and Frodo.
00:15:34 - The Heat.
00:15:35 - Shard and Frodo.
00:15:38 - Milwaukee Bums.
00:15:39 - Shard and Frodo.
00:15:41 - Warriors.
00:15:43 - Shard and Frodo.
00:15:44 - Oh yeah, it is our favorite off-season segment,
00:15:49 the Shard and Frodo report,
00:15:50 where we celebrate the pitfalls and the misery
00:15:53 and the disdain of our closest rivals.
00:15:56 And we're gonna start with a report.
00:15:57 I am gonna run another clip here from Shams.
00:16:00 This is his report on the NBA memo to NBA teams.
00:16:04 - The NBA sent a memo to its 30 NBA teams,
00:16:10 informing them that they have interviewed Damien Lillard
00:16:13 and his agent Aaron Goodwin about his stance
00:16:16 that he only wants to play in Miami,
00:16:18 and the league advised both Lillard and Goodwin
00:16:21 that any future comments of the sort
00:16:24 as far as him wanting to only play in Miami
00:16:26 will be potentially subject him to discipline,
00:16:30 I'm told, in this memo if those comments continue,
00:16:34 as well as a warning to the NBPA
00:16:37 that any future comments by players, their agents,
00:16:40 that are similar to the ones as far as
00:16:42 I only want to play for this specific team
00:16:44 in a trade request, if that's made,
00:16:46 that could also be subject to potential discipline as well.
00:16:49 The NBA told its teams that they spoke to Goodwin,
00:16:52 they spoke to Lillard, and that Goodwin essentially
00:16:55 denied telling teams that he told them
00:16:59 that Lillard would only play in Miami.
00:17:03 The NBA also spoke to other teams,
00:17:06 and essentially they were given the messaging as well
00:17:09 that Goodwin's statements were consistent
00:17:12 for the most part.
00:17:13 For the league to take the step of going
00:17:14 and interviewing Damien Lillard,
00:17:16 going and interviewing his agent,
00:17:19 really informing them to essentially
00:17:22 knock off any potential rhetoric
00:17:24 about only wanting to be traded to Miami.
00:17:26 - Thank you, Shams.
00:17:27 Spoonie, why is this part of the Shot of a Putter Report?
00:17:30 - No, don't go to me, this is Jake's.
00:17:31 This is Jake's.
00:17:32 (laughing)
00:17:33 - I was trying to like evenly distribute the rock.
00:17:35 - No, it's fine.
00:17:36 I've been doing a lot of talk in the last month.
00:17:38 - Jake, why is this part of the Shot of a Putter Report?
00:17:41 - One of my favorite parts of the offseason so far
00:17:44 has been the Miami Heat Twitter
00:17:47 versus the rest of NBA Twitter,
00:17:49 and them being convinced that the world is out to get them
00:17:54 and that their trade package is fair
00:17:56 and that Damien should come play in Miami.
00:17:58 It's been beautiful to see them do mental gymnastics
00:18:03 about the Heat are the ones with the leverage,
00:18:06 despite Portland being the team
00:18:08 that can just not trade him and bring him into camp,
00:18:11 because he's got four years left on his deal.
00:18:14 Four years, like there's no imminent reason to trade him
00:18:18 unless they want to.
00:18:21 This is beautiful.
00:18:23 Adam Silver shout out doing his best stern impression
00:18:26 of the Chris Paul veto back in the day.
00:18:30 The every day that this goes by
00:18:33 is a step closer to the Heat going into training camp
00:18:38 with like a bare bones roster.
00:18:40 Like the Heat can talk about how they have the leverage
00:18:44 all they want, but if Portland doesn't do the deal,
00:18:47 they keep Damien Lillard.
00:18:49 If Miami doesn't do the deal, they are fucked.
00:18:53 They've lost Caleb, they lost,
00:18:55 I wish they lost Caleb Martin.
00:18:56 They lost Gabe Vincent and they lost Max Drews.
00:19:00 If they don't replace them
00:19:02 with anyone besides Josh Richardson,
00:19:06 the devil magic is like 66% of the way out the door
00:19:11 with Gabe Vincent and Max Drews.
00:19:13 The only remaining devil on the team really
00:19:15 is Caleb Martin.
00:19:17 Like if we can just, if they do get this trade done,
00:19:21 he has to be gone.
00:19:21 But every day that this trade doesn't happen
00:19:24 is a step closer to the reality that the Heat have to face
00:19:27 where they've got this bare bones roster
00:19:30 without Damien Lillard.
00:19:32 So I still think that they end up getting Dame,
00:19:37 but I'm really enjoying the entitlement of the Heat
00:19:41 and just that the pettiness, the emotion every day
00:19:45 I'm seeing from these fans, quote unquote,
00:19:48 of them just not being handed Damien Lillard
00:19:52 on a silver platter and then being like, why is it us?
00:19:56 Why when Anthony Davis got traded, did they not,
00:19:59 did the league not step in?
00:20:00 Or why did the league not step in when Kevin Durant said
00:20:03 that Phoenix was the only team he wanted to play for?
00:20:06 Well, in the Phoenix situation,
00:20:08 the Phoenix offered like one of the best trade packages
00:20:10 that's like been offered in the history of the NBA
00:20:14 within like a week of the trade request.
00:20:16 And Anthony Davis never said he wouldn't play
00:20:19 for anyone else.
00:20:20 He just said he wouldn't resign anywhere.
00:20:21 So the Heat doing all this mental gymnastics
00:20:24 to say that like, this is the, why is silver?
00:20:27 Why is the NBA coming down on the Heat
00:20:30 when this has happened time and time again?
00:20:32 This is a very unique situation.
00:20:33 Like the, Damien's agent and Damien have been like
00:20:38 aggressively, aggressively communicating
00:20:42 that they won't play for any other team
00:20:44 or they will only play,
00:20:46 like only wanna be traded to the Heat.
00:20:48 Like, I'm glad that the NBA is finally stepping in
00:20:52 because I do think it's bad for the, bad for the league
00:20:54 where like these players are just taking these extensions
00:20:58 and then six months later are demanding
00:21:00 that they get traded to one specific team
00:21:03 and threatening to not play.
00:21:05 So this is beautiful.
00:21:07 Adam Silver, I appreciate you doing the Lord's work out here
00:21:10 taking us closer to, 'cause like,
00:21:13 we're running low on Eastern Conference contenders
00:21:15 as we'll get to.
00:21:16 And this would really take us a step closer
00:21:18 to there being one less.
00:21:20 - How long until he shows up to training camp
00:21:22 with a cell phone in his pocket like Ben Simmons did?
00:21:25 (laughing)
00:21:26 - I'm sorry, it's just like not paying attention,
00:21:27 but yeah, I think the one concern
00:21:30 is that it's a little too little,
00:21:31 it's too little too late from the NBA.
00:21:33 It's like, they've already made it known, right?
00:21:36 Like you can't wipe your, everyone's memory away
00:21:40 and just be like, just kidding, that didn't happen.
00:21:42 He'll play for any 29 other teams.
00:21:44 So I, yeah, I'm with you, Jake.
00:21:46 I do think he's gonna end up on the Heat,
00:21:48 but the nice thing is that this puts a little pressure
00:21:51 on Miami to up the offer.
00:21:53 And I don't know if there's a world
00:21:55 where they're worse off by trading for Dame Lillard,
00:21:59 but they are going to completely undermine their future
00:22:02 pretty aggressively.
00:22:04 - Yeah, so Shams talked about the framework of a deal.
00:22:08 And if you're watching on YouTube,
00:22:09 where we're showing the screen cap here,
00:22:11 so it'd be up to, you know,
00:22:12 between three and four first round picks,
00:22:15 plus additional pick swaps,
00:22:17 plus additional second round picks,
00:22:19 Tyler Hero to another team
00:22:21 because Portland slash nobody wants him,
00:22:24 shipping out expiring contracts,
00:22:26 plus, excuse me, young players as well.
00:22:30 Like I'm gonna mess up his name here,
00:22:32 but Hameh Harkwes Jr.
00:22:34 He just became trade eligible like today
00:22:37 or yesterday or something.
00:22:39 So that could be part of the holdup
00:22:41 'cause you would have to imagine
00:22:43 he'd be part of that deal as well.
00:22:44 So, you know, all of this could come to a precipice
00:22:48 in the next couple of days
00:22:49 now that their recently drafted rookie is trade eligible.
00:22:53 He looked great in summer league.
00:22:55 It does feel like you guys were saying,
00:22:58 inevitable that he just does end up on the heat.
00:23:00 It does feel too little too late,
00:23:02 like you said, Spoonie,
00:23:04 that it's great for the league to step in here,
00:23:08 but it feels like the deal's kind of like already done
00:23:11 under the table, but it's not terrible.
00:23:14 And this is in line with the Chardon-Frodo report
00:23:16 that the Heat have to absolutely gut themselves
00:23:20 to get a, what, 32 going on 33 year old guard.
00:23:25 We've seen this with money.
00:23:28 We've seen this with a Kemba Walker recently
00:23:31 where like as you ascend into your mid thirties,
00:23:33 if you're undersized and your biggest strength is your speed
00:23:37 and your athleticism and your bounce.
00:23:39 And that includes like popping threes off of a screen
00:23:43 where you need like bounce,
00:23:44 like quickly get into your shooting stance
00:23:46 and get your feet under you and pop up
00:23:47 and get that shot, you know, up.
00:23:50 And over the defender, it doesn't necessarily work out
00:23:53 for players of that archetype going into their mid thirties.
00:23:56 So to see the Heat gut themselves for a guy that,
00:23:59 you know, might only last half a season, a season or so,
00:24:02 and still be very beatable by a,
00:24:04 please God, healthy Celtics team.
00:24:07 I'm kind of for it, you know, so either way.
00:24:10 - Okay, wow.
00:24:10 - Loving what's going on with the Heat right now.
00:24:13 - What's interesting is that like in the Shams clip
00:24:18 yesterday where he talked about that offer,
00:24:20 again, it was like, this is not the offer
00:24:23 that the Heat even put forward yet.
00:24:24 It's like, this is what the Heat could be putting forward.
00:24:28 It's like, it's hard to get a read
00:24:29 on who Shams is speaking for at this point.
00:24:31 'Cause throughout this whole process,
00:24:33 Shams has clearly been a mouthpiece for the Heat
00:24:36 and Woj has been a mouthpiece for the Blazers.
00:24:39 Where now it's like, Shams was saying,
00:24:42 this is the deal that could potentially be put forward,
00:24:46 kind of to me insinuating that like,
00:24:48 the Heat are still yet to put forward a deal
00:24:51 that even looks anywhere close to this,
00:24:53 which is why a deal hasn't happened.
00:24:56 And Pat Riley is like Danny Ainge, right?
00:24:58 Like he hates to lose a deal.
00:25:01 And he and the Heat feel that they aren't,
00:25:05 that they're beating against themselves.
00:25:07 So why would they beat against themselves?
00:25:09 And that's what all of Heat Twitter seems to be thinking.
00:25:12 But if you do any negotiation,
00:25:14 the most powerful weapon in any negotiation
00:25:18 is the willingness to walk away from the deal.
00:25:21 I learned that on day one of negotiation skills
00:25:24 in my second year of university,
00:25:26 and I've never forgotten it.
00:25:27 'Cause if the other team wants to,
00:25:30 like really wants to do the deal,
00:25:31 and you're literally like,
00:25:33 if the Blazers could choose a scenario,
00:25:36 I think bringing Damian Lillard back
00:25:38 is probably what they would choose.
00:25:39 If you bring Damian back onto this team,
00:25:41 they're probably in the mix again
00:25:42 for like a fringe playoff seed,
00:25:44 which the Blazers, that's what they wanna do.
00:25:46 They don't really care so much about winning a title.
00:25:49 They wanna sell tickets,
00:25:51 maybe get an extra couple of games of playoff revenue.
00:25:54 And Damian gets them, I think,
00:25:56 I kind of like that team if you add Damian to it.
00:25:59 So that's the most powerful part,
00:26:01 like weapon in any negotiation.
00:26:04 And if the Heat aren't willing to put forward that package,
00:26:07 then why would the Heat do it?
00:26:10 - Yeah, we really butchered the Jaime Jacquez name
00:26:13 in preparation of the draft when I put him forward.
00:26:16 I definitely called him like Jamie Jack.
00:26:19 - Yeah.
00:26:20 - And I think it was with a French accent.
00:26:23 - Yeah, it was.
00:26:24 It was, he's like Mexico's like pride and joy in hindsight.
00:26:28 So there we go.
00:26:29 - I think pre-entry into the NBA name,
00:26:31 you have to be subject to gross mispronunciation.
00:26:35 So we're okay, we're fine.
00:26:37 We've done worse as well on this podcast.
00:26:40 - Spoonie, interesting,
00:26:41 like what Jake's saying there with the potential
00:26:44 for Lillard to like actually just revert everything
00:26:47 and go back to the Blazers.
00:26:49 If Tatum, for example,
00:26:51 Spoonie did all of this posturing
00:26:53 about like getting off the Celtics in a couple of years,
00:26:55 say like they were a middling Orlando Magic style team
00:26:59 at that point, and then decided,
00:27:00 oh, you know what, actually, I think I'm good.
00:27:03 I'm gonna stay with the Celtics.
00:27:04 Would you be open to welcoming him back at that point?
00:27:08 Or would the damage have been done from your perspective?
00:27:10 - I don't think I would.
00:27:13 I think at that point, if I was a fan of the Blazers,
00:27:16 I would probably want them to get it over with
00:27:18 and just start rebuilding.
00:27:19 'Cause they've been overdue for a rebuild
00:27:21 for a couple of years now.
00:27:23 The problem is they just signed Jeremy Grant
00:27:25 to that obscene contract.
00:27:27 So they're kind of, there's like one foot in, one foot out.
00:27:30 So I don't really know what they do.
00:27:31 I think they're in a unique position
00:27:33 where I don't really trust their management
00:27:36 to oversee a rebuild.
00:27:38 Whereas I would trust Brad Stevens to do that.
00:27:40 So I think it's a little different, but it would be,
00:27:42 I mean, the second he hangs 50 on a team in like November,
00:27:46 I'd be all back in.
00:27:47 Like I wouldn't care at that point, but it would be tough.
00:27:50 And if you're a middling team, like that sucks, dude.
00:27:53 Like I'd rather be a rebuilding team.
00:27:56 - Yeah, but they must have suckers in gym at this point.
00:27:59 - Yeah, true.
00:28:00 - Yeah, so Jake, like this is pretty much your segment.
00:28:05 Let's be honest.
00:28:06 We've been holding it down for you while you've been away.
00:28:09 What else do you have for us that falls in line
00:28:12 with the Shard of Frodo report?
00:28:14 - I really enjoyed the Woj and Sham's notification
00:28:18 that the Milwaukee Bucks have re-signed
00:28:21 the Narcissus Antetokounmpo.
00:28:23 And also the fact that they had signed Robin Lopez.
00:28:27 So I don't know, they're going for the cool,
00:28:30 the brothers memes and the brothers posts
00:28:32 they can put on the programs and stuff.
00:28:35 Because these are not moves to me that indicate
00:28:37 you care about winning a championship.
00:28:41 For a team like Milwaukee, that's like desperate,
00:28:45 absolutely desperate for rotation players
00:28:48 that can play in the playoffs,
00:28:49 because they have four of them.
00:28:51 Four players that can like close a playoff game
00:28:56 at the highest level right now.
00:28:57 And it's their big four.
00:28:59 It's Giannis, Middleton, Drew and Lopez.
00:29:02 And we've seen in the last two playoff runs
00:29:05 that Grayson Allen can't close.
00:29:08 Javon Carter was probably their best bet and he left.
00:29:11 Joe Ingalls couldn't close, he left.
00:29:13 And like Bobby Portis, the Celtics toast him
00:29:18 every time he steps on the court.
00:29:19 He's not a closing NBA player,
00:29:22 especially with the roster construction
00:29:25 of Brooke Lopez and Giannis.
00:29:27 You can't play that jumbo lineup.
00:29:29 There's just not enough foot speed on the perimeter.
00:29:32 So like when you're just throwing away roster spots
00:29:35 to like for nepotism purposes, essentially.
00:29:40 I get that like, if it helps you re-sign Giannis by 0.1%,
00:29:45 then you probably do the deal.
00:29:48 But this is a waste of a roster spot.
00:29:52 And for a team that's like absolutely desperate
00:29:55 for someone that can play in the playoffs,
00:29:58 I just think this is a win for the Celtics.
00:30:01 Like he's not doing anything.
00:30:02 He's got the pom-poms out all season long.
00:30:05 - Is he that bad though?
00:30:06 Like, so Lopez grouping them together,
00:30:08 Lopez, Robin Lopez and the Narcissus
00:30:11 as a 14th and 15th man, Spoonie.
00:30:14 Are they that terrible?
00:30:16 Like I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
00:30:17 Obviously I'd love to shit on the box.
00:30:20 - But Narcissus, yes, is that terrible.
00:30:23 He is so bad, but you know,
00:30:26 Robin's been like bounced around horrible teams
00:30:28 for the last couple of years.
00:30:29 So I haven't really seen him play a lot,
00:30:31 but like he's not really cracked a rotation in a while.
00:30:35 I tend to think there's probably a reason for that.
00:30:38 He doesn't have, like Brooke really is not,
00:30:41 would not be a positive offensive player
00:30:43 if he couldn't shoot threes, but he can.
00:30:46 Well, Robin can't.
00:30:47 So he's basically you're playing four on five offensively.
00:30:50 And I don't think he protects the rim
00:30:52 or moves his feet well enough on defense
00:30:54 to sort of bring positive value as a player.
00:30:57 So yeah, as your 14th guy,
00:31:00 I think you can do worse than Robin Lopez.
00:31:02 I'm not sure you can do much worse than Thanos.
00:31:04 So, but yeah, Jake spot on.
00:31:06 They're not playing in the playoffs.
00:31:08 Like these guys are complete non-factors.
00:31:11 - Ben, I appreciate, you know,
00:31:13 the devil's advocate point of view and Fox fans on Twitter.
00:31:17 The 14th and 15th roster spots don't matter.
00:31:20 Like, I guess the short answer to that is like,
00:31:23 you're right, kind of, but you know,
00:31:26 you never know when you're going to hit on a Sam Houser,
00:31:30 a Gabe Vinson, a Max Struis.
00:31:32 You never know.
00:31:33 And if you're just throwing these spots away,
00:31:34 you're never going to find out what the flip side is.
00:31:36 You look at Brad Stevens,
00:31:37 it's all about process over results.
00:31:39 One of my favorite Brad Stevens-isms.
00:31:42 It's like, okay, is Delano Banton going to make the roster?
00:31:45 And is he going to be any good?
00:31:47 Probably not.
00:31:47 But like the idea of signing a 23 year old

00:32:47 Don't stop.
00:32:47 - You know, like sword fighting,
00:32:49 just to play within the realms of your typical RPG.
00:32:53 Would you want like a plus 5% increase to that skill?
00:32:58 And so you think about Jarnus being sword fighting,
00:33:01 your core skill,
00:33:02 wouldn't you want to bring in his brother
00:33:03 to like properly enhance the effectiveness,
00:33:06 the happiness, the pleasure of that core piece,
00:33:10 rather than like taking a total gamble
00:33:13 on like a Delano Bantam, for example, instead of that.
00:33:17 Like, wouldn't you rather sort of invest
00:33:19 in what makes your team a winning team?
00:33:22 - Let's call it, let's call this other skill alchemy, right?
00:33:26 So you're saying you want to invest in one handed.
00:33:29 - Not by many RPGs, clearly.
00:33:31 - You want to invest in one handed, right?
00:33:33 And then the Celtics are taking the alchemist route, right?
00:33:36 But what if every 10th potion you make
00:33:39 is worth a ton of money, right?
00:33:41 So like, isn't that worthwhile?
00:33:44 I would much rather like, okay, yeah,
00:33:45 maybe it's day-to-day functionality
00:33:48 isn't as good as the one-handed skill.
00:33:50 But look, if I could sell a potion
00:33:52 and all of a sudden that's going to make all of my skills
00:33:55 way better, 'cause it's going to give me a bunch of money.
00:33:58 So I think like, that's the approach you got to take
00:34:00 if you're, you know, and that's why I always,
00:34:03 always in Skyrim go alchemy,
00:34:05 'cause you can make a lot of money.
00:34:07 (laughing)
00:34:08 - Give me a year, I'll go play more RPGs
00:34:11 and I'll come back.
00:34:12 I'll circle back next off season with this analogy.
00:34:14 I'll have it more fine tuned.
00:34:16 - I think the reality is the process
00:34:18 that the box have used here is like wrong
00:34:21 as far as team building goes.
00:34:23 So, but because Jarnus likes his brother,
00:34:26 it is kind of helpful from that perspective.
00:34:28 But like, from an actual winning a championship,
00:34:32 this next coming season,
00:34:35 signing for Narcis to the 15th spot is the wrong choice
00:34:39 versus like signing someone that could actually help.

00:34:46 he's basically just, you know,
00:34:48 gives us a 0% chance that one of their last roster spots

00:49:11 if they're wrong, that's on them.
00:49:13 But yeah, I'm pretty sure that it's correct.
00:49:17 And so like,
00:49:17 that's just an absurd amount of success
00:49:20 for guys that haven't entered their prime yet.
00:49:23 And I feel like they get dinged
00:49:25 because of the amount of success they've had.
00:49:27 It's like, oh, these guys,
00:49:29 you know, for dumb NBA commentators or fans or whatever,
00:49:34 that they're chokers or don't live up to expectations.
00:49:37 Like they have only exceeded expectations
00:49:40 for guys that are 25 and 26 at this point.
00:49:43 Like, and that's really the only take to have.
00:49:46 - Yeah.
00:49:47 And someone who would be hugely impactful
00:49:50 on their ability to be successful this year,
00:49:53 this is a bit of a pivot, Sam Houser.
00:49:56 Seriously though, like Sam Houser's ability
00:50:01 to space the floor and allow the Jays to operate
00:50:05 and operate as an elite kickout option.
00:50:08 We saw it in snippets last season.
00:50:11 Like cannot be understated.
00:50:13 And Spoonie, you know, folks,
00:50:15 if you're watching on YouTube,
00:50:17 the headline for Spoonie's article
00:50:19 on Celtics blog is on screen right now.
00:50:20 And let me just preface this
00:50:22 with the opening couple of paragraphs here.
00:50:24 So opportunities to change your life
00:50:27 or your career don't come around that often,
00:50:29 but they're usually different than the movies.
00:50:31 Very rarely our own lives defined
00:50:33 by one big make or break choice
00:50:35 of which the fate of you, your family,
00:50:38 or sometimes the world depends on.
00:50:40 Instead, those opportunities play out
00:50:42 over weeks, months, and years.
00:50:44 The first year law student walking
00:50:46 into their very first contracts class,
00:50:48 the apprentice electrician showing up
00:50:50 to their first job site,
00:50:52 the band, real big fish,
00:50:53 stepping into the studio to record
00:50:55 the seminal album, Turn the Radio Off.
00:50:58 Sam Houser sits on the precipice
00:50:59 of such an opportunity.
00:51:01 Despite being undrafted,
00:51:02 he's made his way into an NBA contract.
00:51:05 He's joined the Celtics on tour.
00:51:07 He now just needs to become
00:51:09 a full-time member of the band.
00:51:11 So first of all, go and read that article
00:51:13 because it's great.
00:51:14 I've read it twice, once for pleasure,
00:51:16 once in preparation for this podcast.
00:51:18 Spoonie, what does,
00:51:20 just to summarize your article,
00:51:22 what does Sam Houser need to do
00:51:24 to become a full-time band
00:51:25 member for the Celtics?
00:51:26 Real quick, I'll explain
00:51:27 the real big fish reference quickly.
00:51:30 The last thing I wrote was
00:51:31 I like used Game of Thrones
00:51:33 to explain something.
00:51:35 And Celtics blog tweeted it out
00:51:37 and was like, next week
00:51:38 we'll be talking about 90 ska bands.
00:51:40 Real big fish is a 90 ska band.
00:51:42 So I just snuck that in.
00:51:44 It's like a deep cut for my own
00:51:46 purposes.
00:51:47 Can't say I know who
00:51:48 they are.
00:51:49 They rock, dude.
00:51:49 Check real big fish out.
00:51:51 Yeah, they rule.
00:51:51 Great, great live jam band.
00:51:53 Yeah, yeah.
00:51:54 Anyway, so Sam Houser,
00:51:57 we were 1.7 points per 100
00:51:59 better with Sam Houser
00:52:00 on the court last year.
00:52:02 The offense got three points
00:52:04 per 100 possessions worse
00:52:06 when he played.
00:52:08 So we were better
00:52:09 because we defended better
00:52:10 with Sam Houser.
00:52:11 He had one of the best
00:52:12 defensive ratings on the team.
00:52:14 Now, I think we're probably due
00:52:15 for some regression
00:52:16 on that side of it.
00:52:18 But you got to think like
00:52:18 the offensive side should,
00:52:21 considering his primary skill
00:52:22 set is offensively, should come up.
00:52:25 And I think part of the reason
00:52:27 is how one dimensional
00:52:29 he was as a player last year.
00:52:31 307 of his 400 field
00:52:34 goal attempts were zero dribble threes.
00:52:36 So three quarters of his shots
00:52:39 were zero dribble threes.
00:52:40 So I basically was just saying,
00:52:41 like, here's two very easy ways
00:52:44 he can have a bigger effect
00:52:45 on the offense and,
00:52:47 you know, and offset
00:52:49 what will probably be
00:52:50 some defensive regression.
00:52:51 And that's like one dribble
00:52:53 relocation threes
00:52:54 like Duncan Robinson
00:52:55 does all the time.
00:52:56 And then he finished at 80%
00:52:58 around the rim last year.
00:52:59 So it's actually really good
00:53:00 when he got there.
00:53:01 He just never got there.
00:53:02 So just be a little more
00:53:02 aggressive with the drive, man.
00:53:04 Trust your finishing.
00:53:05 Trust your soft touch.
00:53:06 You're great from the foul line,
00:53:07 like you're going to get fouled
00:53:08 sometimes.
00:53:09 So just like two small things.
00:53:10 And then he can absorb
00:53:12 some of those Grant Williams roles.
00:53:13 I expect him to be up
00:53:14 around 25 minutes a game.
00:53:16 We don't have another
00:53:17 wing off the bench.
00:53:18 I mean, who's playing?
00:53:20 He's the only one.
00:53:22 Yeah, that's that's the thing.
00:53:24 And Jake, I'll let you go in a second.
00:53:26 But, you know, we cut champagne.
00:53:28 We've got this extra roster
00:53:30 of salary cap space rather
00:53:32 like I'm all I'm all for the house
00:53:35 of first wing off the bench,
00:53:36 the thing, but like we
00:53:37 we do need a backup here.
00:53:39 And I do hope that they
00:53:40 they feel that that roster spot
00:53:42 with a backup wing.
00:53:43 But how's also an underrated cutter,
00:53:46 which is like, yes, I don't know.
00:53:48 Maybe he's properly rated
00:53:49 because like that's
00:53:50 what you need to be good at.
00:53:51 If you're like not very fast,
00:53:53 not very big.
00:53:55 A white guy, you know,
00:53:57 like he needs to be a good guy
00:53:58 and he is very, very good at that.
00:54:01 So, yeah, I'm excited.
00:54:03 I hope that Joe has read
00:54:06 your article, Spoonie,
00:54:07 and I hope that he sort of factors
00:54:10 that into his rotation
00:54:11 in the upcoming season.
00:54:12 What do you got, Jake?
00:54:13 I love Sam Houser,
00:54:16 and I love that we just have the
00:54:18 the same house, the hype train,
00:54:20 just like we're going supersonic.
00:54:22 We're breaking the sound
00:54:23 barrier with this train.
00:54:24 By the time the season starts,
00:54:25 it's going to be like, could
00:54:27 will he be a fringe all star?
00:54:29 Will he will he
00:54:30 Corzer made it?
00:54:31 Yeah, we will.
00:54:32 Yeah, exactly.
00:54:32 Will will he be in the three
00:54:34 point contest?
00:54:35 That's probably our goal
00:54:36 is can we get Sam Houser
00:54:37 in the three point contest?
00:54:38 It is still a travesty
00:54:42 that Sam Houser did not play
00:54:44 in the playoffs,
00:54:46 especially the Hawks series.
00:54:48 I also think that he matched up
00:54:50 really well with Billy
00:54:51 like coming into the Hawks series.
00:54:53 I was like, this is a Houser series.
00:54:55 He can hold up defensively
00:54:57 and then you can't hide
00:54:58 Trae Young on him
00:54:59 because because as you said, Ben,
00:55:00 he moves without the ball.
00:55:02 I saw a few clips here.
00:55:04 We can talk over it
00:55:05 because there's no sound.
00:55:05 But his defense against Philly
00:55:08 from the regular season game,
00:55:10 where there was no Rob and no Horford.
00:55:13 Luke really cooked us
00:55:14 on these two clips here.
00:55:15 How's a great screen
00:55:16 navigation on Harden?
00:55:18 And then Luke helps
00:55:19 and then helps again.
00:55:20 Zero need to help on that either.
00:55:22 Like I said, not need to.
00:55:24 And then locks up Maxi 1v1
00:55:26 after navigating a screen again
00:55:28 and then moving off the ball,
00:55:29 taking advantage of someone like Harden
00:55:30 is terrible with off ball defense splash.
00:55:32 Never in doubt.
00:55:34 And again, Harden kind of like gets
00:55:36 like got caught ball
00:55:37 watching Luke Cornett.
00:55:39 And then how's a splashes
00:55:41 a three and in this play,
00:55:42 Trae Young tries to fight
00:55:43 through a litany of screens,
00:55:45 gets lost.
00:55:45 Sam Houser, bang, splash.
00:55:48 Like it just did not make any sense to me
00:55:50 that he was not playing in the rotation
00:55:52 in the Hawks series.
00:55:53 And again, in the in the sixes series,
00:55:55 because I think what it gives you
00:55:57 offensively.
00:55:57 For a team that like has off,
00:56:00 that's that's their issue in the playoffs.
00:56:02 I thought he really could have helped
00:56:04 in three games versus the Hawks last season,
00:56:06 the average 17 points per game.
00:56:07 Now on 68 percent from three.
00:56:10 The point total is kind of buoyed
00:56:14 by the last game of the regular season.
00:56:16 If you remember, that was also the game
00:56:18 that paid for it at 30 point triple double.
00:56:20 Sam Houser, I think went nine for 14
00:56:23 from three in that game.
00:56:24 I saw the box court.
00:56:26 I was like, why do I don't remember
00:56:27 this game more vividly?
00:56:29 And then I went back and I was like,
00:56:30 oh, it's it was the last game.
00:56:32 It didn't matter.
00:56:33 Yeah, but he's got it to us.
00:56:36 But yeah, his percentage from three
00:56:37 against the Hawks actually went up.
00:56:39 If you exclude the nine for 14 game
00:56:41 because he was that lights
00:56:42 out against the Hawks.
00:56:43 And in that Philly game,
00:56:45 he was 14 points and eight rebounds
00:56:48 because he needed him to rebound
00:56:49 because there was no rubber now
00:56:50 for four from three.
00:56:52 I know those are two of our
00:56:54 bigger, you know, Eastern Conference rivals.
00:56:57 And then also the game where the Celtics
00:56:59 almost beat the Bucs
00:57:00 when there was like half
00:57:01 the Celtics roster was out.
00:57:03 He was also crucial in that game as well.
00:57:05 Like he had proved
00:57:06 they could hang against like
00:57:08 two of the biggest
00:57:10 Eastern Conference rivals team,
00:57:11 plus our first round opponent.
00:57:12 The fact that he got,
00:57:13 you know, changed the bench
00:57:15 for the playoffs was really rough.
00:57:18 And, you know, Grant goes out,
00:57:20 Hauser steps up.
00:57:21 That kind of is like the obvious
00:57:22 the obvious move going into next season.
00:57:25 And I saw some people
00:57:27 talking about rebounding.
00:57:29 I forget if I've been
00:57:30 through these stats or it's
00:57:31 just been a while since I've been on.
00:57:32 But Grant, eight point six rebounds
00:57:35 per 100 possessions.
00:57:36 Hauser, seven point five rebounds
00:57:38 per 100 possessions.
00:57:39 You know, kind of a negligible difference.
00:57:41 The biggest difference
00:57:44 is going to be the offensive impact
00:57:46 of Hauser versus Grant.
00:57:47 As good as Grant was,
00:57:48 percentage wise from three.
00:57:50 Grant played two hundred
00:57:52 two thousand and forty five minutes
00:57:53 last season, which is a lot more
00:57:55 than I kind of thought before I checked.
00:57:56 Fourth on the team.
00:57:57 Fourth. Yeah, dude.
00:57:58 I know. Wow.
00:57:59 Like our memories of Grant,
00:58:00 like kind of like getting DMPs
00:58:01 doesn't really match up
00:58:02 with how much he played last season.
00:58:03 Yeah. Yeah.
00:58:05 But Grant took two hundred
00:58:06 ninety one three pointers last season.
00:58:08 Forty percent.
00:58:09 Hauser only played one thousand
00:58:12 two hundred ninety minutes.
00:58:13 He got up three hundred
00:58:14 thirty five threes and shot 42 percent.
00:58:17 Like he shot, you know,
00:58:18 40 more threes and Grant
00:58:20 in like seven hundred less minutes.
00:58:22 We also missed every three
00:58:24 between like January and March.
00:58:25 Yeah, dude.
00:58:26 As well.
00:58:26 Yeah.
00:58:26 And still shot over 40, 40 percent.
00:58:29 Yeah. Which is insane.
00:58:30 That was that was the whole team
00:58:32 that missed every three in November
00:58:34 that like that.
00:58:35 I don't know.
00:58:35 So that was that was a team wide issue.
00:58:37 And then turnovers
00:58:38 one of our Achilles
00:58:40 heel in the playoffs grant
00:58:41 to turnovers per 100 possessions.
00:58:42 How's a one point one turnovers
00:58:44 per 100 possessions?
00:58:45 And that's because he doesn't dribble.
00:58:46 As Spooney alluded to earlier,
00:58:48 zero dribble threes.
00:58:49 And that was something
00:58:50 how many times we're
00:58:51 yelling at the TV screen.
00:58:52 Grant, just shoot the ball.
00:58:54 Just shoot the ball in that
00:58:56 in that game that the Celtics
00:58:57 almost beat the Bucs with their bench.
00:58:58 The last play of the game,
00:59:01 Grant had like an open three
00:59:03 and he pumped fate
00:59:04 and dribbled off his foot.
00:59:04 Turnover game lost.
00:59:06 How's the shoots that no question
00:59:08 gets it off and he may
00:59:10 may or may come this.
00:59:11 But to quote Eric Spalstra
00:59:13 in the playoffs, my top shots on goal,
00:59:16 shots on goal, shots on goal.
00:59:17 Yeah, absolutely.
00:59:20 Go check out the Spooney
00:59:22 write up on.
00:59:22 It's really good on Celtics blog.
00:59:24 It's great as all Spooney write ups.
00:59:28 And you can see it
00:59:29 if you log on to Celtics blog dot com
00:59:31 as I talk like a 90s Internet person.
00:59:34 Log on to Celtics blog dot com.
00:59:36 You can see there.
00:59:37 Get on a while.
00:59:38 Yeah, yeah.
00:59:39 Dial up.
00:59:40 It's there under the literally
00:59:42 it's in the right hand column
00:59:43 on the must read or most read.
00:59:45 Rather, you can see
00:59:46 that the first article
00:59:47 there is is Spooney's article on Sam.
00:59:51 How's it go?
00:59:52 Check it out.
00:59:52 Moving on to misc news, miscellaneous news.
00:59:55 Before we wrap up here,
00:59:56 Danilo Gallinari
00:59:58 made some headlines today,
00:59:59 at least on my Twitter feed.
01:00:01 And this is from his
01:00:03 a Cresta Alta podcast.
01:00:06 Quote, I can't wait to play against Boston
01:00:09 and forgive me for not doing the Italian accent
01:00:11 when the schedule will be will be unveiled.
01:00:14 I'll put an X on the games
01:00:15 we play at Boston against the Celtics.
01:00:18 Spooney, what's the deal here?
01:00:20 Like, did we not treat this guy extremely well?
01:00:23 Did we not like harbor his recovery
01:00:27 after he tore his ACL in a non NBA game?
01:00:30 What's what's the deal?
01:00:31 Every time he posted on Instagram,
01:00:33 it was just like clovers.
01:00:35 And we love you.
01:00:35 Hope you get healthy.
01:00:37 Sorry for paying you six million dollars
01:00:39 to rehab an injury.
01:00:40 We had nothing to do.
01:00:41 Didn't he do it when he was playing
01:00:42 for Italy to like,
01:00:44 what do you want from us?
01:00:45 Like, yeah, you got traded, Danilo.
01:00:47 You you're 37 with a serious injury
01:00:50 like it's going to happen, buddy.
01:00:52 Sorry.
01:00:52 So I don't get it.
01:00:54 But I guess he's just hurt
01:00:56 because he really wanted to be a Celtic.
01:00:57 I can't believe Danilo
01:01:00 Galnari has a podcast.
01:01:01 I guess we have a podcast,
01:01:02 so he's as qualified as anyone.
01:01:04 Arguably much more qualified
01:01:07 to talk about basketball on a podcast.
01:01:10 I wonder if this was in Italian or not,
01:01:13 because Cresta Alta,
01:01:15 that sounds like it could be got Italian.
01:01:18 So shout out to have a transcribe this one.
01:01:21 But yeah, what the hell, Gallo?
01:01:24 I will say the last time
01:01:25 he played the Celtics,
01:01:26 didn't he have like 38 points?
01:01:27 He lit us up.
01:01:28 Yeah. Yeah.
01:01:29 So that's fine.
01:01:31 If he wants to, if that's his revenge,
01:01:33 you know, you get up, get up 12, three.
01:01:36 He'll be playing for the Wizards.
01:01:37 So we'll see if he's able
01:01:40 to even get any shots up
01:01:42 with Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma on the team.
01:01:44 Like if there's any
01:01:45 if there's any other scraps to go around.
01:01:47 But yeah, that was that was a weird one.
01:01:49 I we were as excited as anybody
01:01:50 to have Danilo on the team.
01:01:52 So.
01:01:53 Well, yeah, we played the song on the podcast.
01:01:56 We were like, everyone wanted it to be a thing.
01:01:59 Like, I'm sorry it didn't happen.
01:02:00 I'm sorry you were injured.
01:02:02 No one wanted it to go that way.
01:02:04 And then like we traded Grant Williams,
01:02:06 right, for salary cap reasons.
01:02:09 So we were very much more.
01:02:11 Yeah. Marcus Smart. Thank you.
01:02:13 We're so much more attached to those guys
01:02:15 than you, Danilo.
01:02:16 So like, I apologize
01:02:18 that you were a symptom
01:02:20 of this CBA situation.
01:02:22 And Spoonie and I talked about like,
01:02:24 where does the new CBA rank in like things
01:02:27 that have like fucked the Celtics
01:02:29 in the past 10 years?
01:02:30 And it was number one.
01:02:31 So I'm sorry.
01:02:32 We've got bigger issues to deal with.
01:02:34 You know, you're getting paid
01:02:37 millions of dollars.
01:02:38 You we, you know, gave you a haven
01:02:40 in which to recover from your injury.
01:02:42 And we've sent you somewhere
01:02:43 where you'll arguably have more playing time.
01:02:45 So like.
01:02:46 Kind of fuck you, Danilo Gallinari.
01:02:49 I don't know what else to say.
01:02:50 Like, I'm annoyed.
01:02:51 The best doctors and hospitals
01:02:52 in the country, man.
01:02:54 Like, come on, Danilo.
01:02:55 Very frustrating
01:02:57 and way out of left field.
01:02:58 All right, let's let's end on this.
01:03:00 So Derek White was on NBA today, today,
01:03:03 and I'm going to truncate
01:03:05 some of the quotes here.
01:03:06 What about this one?
01:03:08 Quote, I love being here in Boston.
01:03:10 It would be cool to get an extension,
01:03:12 White said when asked
01:03:13 if he'd like to get a deal done
01:03:14 before the season starts.
01:03:16 Quote, we'll see what happens
01:03:17 during that window.
01:03:18 But I've loved my time in Boston so far
01:03:20 and my focus right now
01:03:21 is just on the season.
01:03:23 Like the interviews on YouTube.
01:03:24 Go check it out.
01:03:25 And he talks about how like
01:03:26 the starting point guard role
01:03:28 is a natural fit.
01:03:29 And the addition of Chris
01:03:30 apps, Paul Zingas
01:03:31 is only going to make his job easier
01:03:33 and he's really looking forward to it.
01:03:34 Blah, blah, blah, etc, etc.
01:03:36 We'll throw now to the world's
01:03:38 leading expert on Derek White,
01:03:40 Jake Eisenberg, fresh back from Albania.
01:03:42 Did you have a chance
01:03:44 to catch the interview?
01:03:45 What do you think about these quotes
01:03:46 from Derek White?
01:03:47 Both Buffalo.
01:03:48 No, I was actually wasn't able
01:03:50 to find it, but I said
01:03:51 I saw the quotes earlier.
01:03:52 Offer the extension
01:03:56 as soon as he's eligible.
01:03:58 Three years, 90 million,
01:04:00 30 million a year is like
01:04:02 in today's NBA
01:04:03 or by the time that extension kicks in,
01:04:06 30 million is going to be
01:04:09 going to be nothing.
01:04:10 You know, the Fred Van Vliet
01:04:11 of the world making 43.
01:04:13 Jeremy Grant making.
01:04:14 40 or 35, whatever he's making like
01:04:19 like you could make an argument
01:04:20 that Derek shouldn't take the extension
01:04:22 because if when if he if he's
01:04:23 is able to get to free agency,
01:04:26 he'll he'll be making
01:04:28 like 40 million a year.
01:04:29 He does strike me as a type of dude
01:04:30 that like if you offer him a three
01:04:32 for 90 million dollar contract,
01:04:33 he's going to be like.
01:04:34 Yes, I'll take that immediately
01:04:36 because he just likes to hang out
01:04:39 with his his kid Hendrix and
01:04:41 and just hope.
01:04:43 And so you kind of need to make sure
01:04:46 that this guy's locked up,
01:04:47 because I think
01:04:48 I would say that he's probably
01:04:50 more important to keep around
01:04:51 than Porzingis, because
01:04:53 you need to make sure
01:04:54 you've got like a legitimate point
01:04:56 card to run the team going forward,
01:04:59 because it's going to be
01:05:00 pretty much impossible
01:05:01 to find someone in free agency
01:05:02 because of how much
01:05:03 the Jays will be making.
01:05:04 And having a look
01:05:06 at the salary cap stuff,
01:05:07 it does seem like you're with you.
01:05:09 You'll still be able to have Jason
01:05:11 because that'll be the first year
01:05:12 that Jason's supermax contract kicks in.
01:05:14 Jason Jalen, KP, Rob, Derek.
01:05:17 And if he's making 30 million,
01:05:19 that leaves like
01:05:20 like another 30 million of
01:05:23 like for the rest of the roster,
01:05:24 which is not a lot, obviously,
01:05:25 but that still leaves space
01:05:27 for the first round pick
01:05:29 from the Warriors,
01:05:29 the first round pick
01:05:30 at the Celtics, owner of their own
01:05:32 that core locked up.
01:05:35 I don't care who else is on the roster.
01:05:37 I know you guys spoke about
01:05:39 like that being a
01:05:40 screwing over the Celtics.
01:05:41 The CBA is like the biggest things
01:05:43 by the time we get there.
01:05:45 A lot of teams are going to be feeling
01:05:46 that crunch as well.
01:05:47 And that's going to kind of.
01:05:48 Maybe really level the playing field
01:05:51 because the Celtics will have this
01:05:52 this core intact.
01:05:54 And so for other teams to match up
01:05:56 to that level of talent
01:05:57 could be quite difficult
01:05:58 because like KP for 30 million
01:06:00 and Derek for 30 million
01:06:01 will actually kind of be cheap
01:06:03 in the NBA in twenty five, twenty six.
01:06:06 So get it done immediately.
01:06:09 Yeah, I think average starter money
01:06:11 is like 20, a little more than 20
01:06:14 right now.
01:06:15 And yeah, exactly.
01:06:17 That's going to be average
01:06:18 starter money in two, three years.
01:06:20 And Derek White is much better
01:06:21 than an average starter.
01:06:22 So that's a positive contract
01:06:24 the second he signs it.
01:06:25 And he's older than you kind of think,
01:06:28 but he doesn't have a ton of miles on him
01:06:30 because he played, you know,
01:06:31 like D2 basketball
01:06:33 for most of his college career
01:06:34 and then was kind of on those
01:06:36 funky, deep Spurs team.
01:06:38 And it's not like he was racking up
01:06:39 like thirty seven minutes a night.
01:06:40 They weren't ever making
01:06:41 the playoffs, really.
01:06:42 So like, I think he'll age
01:06:44 pretty gracefully as well.
01:06:46 It probably means you got to pick
01:06:48 between White and Brogdon.
01:06:49 In my opinion, that is not a choice.
01:06:51 That is a very simple choice.
01:06:53 That is Derek White
01:06:54 ten times out of ten.
01:06:55 So, yeah, sign him up.
01:06:57 He's aerodynamic with the bald head.
01:07:00 Oh, yeah, he's going to be the point guard.
01:07:02 We saw that one run
01:07:03 when he was the point guard
01:07:04 when Smart was out
01:07:05 and he outplayed Marcus Smart last year
01:07:08 as the starting point guard.
01:07:09 So I'm excited to see it.
01:07:10 I think he's going to have a monster year.
01:07:11 We're joking about
01:07:12 Hauser borderline all star.
01:07:14 Derek White might actually be a borderline
01:07:16 all star next year.
01:07:17 Yes, let's go.
01:07:20 Let's go.
01:07:21 Yeah.
01:07:22 All right.
01:07:22 Let's let's wrap up on that.
01:07:24 That is going to do it for this one.
01:07:25 Thank you so much for joining us.
01:07:26 We will be back on Thursday night
