A tragic incident took place at early hours of Tuesday in Thane district after a girder launching machine fell on the bridge causing death of around 17 people, and injuries to several. Apart from the deceased, there is fear that several are trapped beneath the debris.

This tragic incident occurred in Sarlambe Village of Shahpur Tehsil of Thane district of Maharashtra.

According to a police statement, all those who died in the accidents were mostly those who were engaged in the construction of the third phase of the Samruddhi Expressway.

The girder launching machine was used in the phase III of construction of Samruddhi Express Highway. This equipment is used in highway and high-speed rail bridge building projects to install precast box girders.

Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by NDRF personnels. The NDRF team got information about the incident around 1:30 am in the morning. The first team of NDRF started their rescue operation around 5:30 am in the morning. The search and rescue operation by NDRF is still underway. The sniff dogs are also used at the location for the rescue.

The chief minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Sindhe in a tweet expressed his pain over the Thane incident. He has announced an ex-gratia of Rupee five lakh for each kin of the deceased. He has further instructed proper treatment of those injured at the state government's expense.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident of Thane. The PM has further announced an ex-gratia of Rs Two lakh for each kin of the deceased and Rs fifty thousand for those injured.

The Samruddhi Express Highway, is also known as Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, which spans 701 kilometers. The incident today occurred during the third phase of the construction. While the first-phase was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the preceding year.
