New South Korean Leader
South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk Yeol said on Thursday, March 10, 2022 that he will solidify an alliance with the US, build a powerful military and sternly cope with North Korean provocations, hours after he won a hard-fought election to become the country’s next leader. He also stressed the need to repair ties with Japan despite a bitter dispute over wartime history. Yoon, who ran on the ticket of the main opposition People Power Party, sparked controversy when he promised to abolish the country’s Gender Equality and Family Ministry, which he accused of pushing policies unfair toward men.
