Breton culture thriving in Polish city of Poznan
This week, we head to the Polish city of Poznan, where Breton culture is thriving. That's thanks to a strong bond created when people in the French region of Brittany set up humanitarian convoys to Poland during the dying days of Communism. Friendships and cultural exchanges continue to this day, as FRANCE 24's Isabelle Romero and Luke Brown report.
The Medieval streets of Poznan in the east of Poland echo to the notes of Celtic music from Brittany.For the past 30 years, the Dom Bretanii (the “House of Brittany”) has become a cultural hub in the city, attracting Breton musicians for concerts, and organising Breton dance classes for locals.The close ties that stretch from one end of Europe to the other date back to the 1980s, when the Breton newspaper Ouest France set up convoys of humanitarian donations for the people of Poznan, impoverished by the slow collapse of the Communist regime.Our reporters Isabelle Romero and Luke Brown went to find out more about these cultural exchanges – and how folk singers from both countries find similarities in their repertoires despite the language barrier.
