In June of 1592, just as Yi Sun-sin is going into action against the Japanese navy, a small militia of Korean civilians under Gwak Jae-u wins Korea’s first victory against Hideyoshi’s forces on land. It marks the beginning of a Korean guerrilla movement known as the uibyeong, the “Righteous Armies.”
