Flooding on the Mississippi River Longest in Nearly a Century The National Weather Service says
the flooding hasn't been this bad since 1927. That was the year of the "Great Flood," which the most destructive occurrence
of its kind in U.S. history. Due to record amounts of rain and snow melting in the spring, current flooding
has affected eight states. Because of climate change, downpours have jumped nearly 40% in the Midwest since the 1990s. In the central part of the country,
water levels are above flood stages
in almost 400 river gauges. Over 70 of them report major flooding
while another 105 report moderate flooding. So far, there have been no official fatalities
due to the Mississippi River's overflow.
