Serbian long jumper Ivana Španović has a fair claim to being the athlete of the year so far after her phenomenal performance at the European Athletics Indoor Championships earlier this month.

Now a firm date in her diary is the inaugural multi-sport European Championships in August 2018, which will bring together the existing championships of seven of Europe’s leading sports into one coordinated, exciting multi-sport event.

Glasgow and Berlin are the co-host cities next year. Aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, golf, rowing and triathlon will be held in Scotland, with the German capital staging the athletics.

In Berlin, the now two-time European indoor champion will be looking to also defend the European outdoor title which she won in Amsterdam last summer and Španović has also become a confirmed cheerleader for the championships.

“I think the idea is really great, anything similar to the Olympic Games will be good for the sports and the audiences love it,” commented Španović after acquiring the latest addition to her gold medal collection.

“For me, after athletics, I think my favourite sport of all the others in the European Championships will be the gymnastics. When I was young I tried gymnastics but I was too tall and just too big!

“I’m definitely going to be there [in Berlin], trying to get the gold again. I take each championship one-by-one but it’s less than two years away, so that’s close. Yes, next year’s European Championships are definitely on my horizon.”
