In a new study, an international team of scientists led by Queen’s University Belfast has determined that Hannibal likely took the Col de Traversette route through the Alps to invade Italy during the Second Punic War.

A debate that has gone on for more than two thousand years could be settled by a new study.
According to a press release, an international team of scientists led by Queen’s University Belfast believe they have figured out the route that Hannibal took through the Alps to invade Italy.
Using a variety of scientific and environmental analyses, they have determined that the Col de Traversette was the likely path. 
The main source of their evidence is terrain dated to around 218 B.C. which retains evidence of a mass passage of humans and animals.
