This patient came in for a general skin exam and pointed out this bump on her upper back. I told her it was a benign cyst, and she was nice enough to allow us to film the removal during this visit.
These cysts can be removed using a small diameter punch biopsy tool, as seen here. The cyst contents are squeezed out, and care it taken to remove the entire cyst wall, so that there is a low risk of recurrence.
These types of cysts don't need to be removed but they can be a source of concern and embarrassment for patients. They are benign, but if they get inflamed and/or infected they can grow quite large and red and be very painful. Antibiotics and drainage of the area may be necessary and permanent scarring may result.
In this case, the cyst is not inflamed nor infected, and as always, I try to remove the entire cyst in order to diminish risk of recurrence. Sutures were placed which will be removed in 10 days.
Thank you so much for watching!!
