Peru: Protests Resume against Tía María Mine

Protests have resumed against the Tia Maria project of the Southern Copper Corporation in the Arequipa iregion n southern Peru. Earlier this year confrontations with the police turned the issue into the largest social conflict of 2015 with at least five casualties. Residents and farm workers marched through different towns of the Islay province on Tuesday night demanding a definite end to the project. The protests stopped temporarily in June and July when the government declared a state of emergency and called in thousands of police and soldiers. Protesters may now adopt new measures.
