Peru: Longshoremen Take to the Streets to Demand Workers' Rights

As the conflict over the Tia Maria mining project enters its second month in Peru, even more mass uprisings are gripping the Andean nation. Now it’s the longshoremen who have taken to the streets, demanding full health care coverage and wage increases in line with profits raked in by the transnational APM. In 2014, APM obtained almost US$17 billion in profits in Peru alone. This is one of 175 active conflicts in the country today, in which President Ollanta Humala has sided with the companies and not with the movements demanding justice. Instead of recognizing the legitimate demands of the longshoremen, for example, he has sent in the Navy to replace the striking workers and perform their duties. Rael Mora reports from Lima for teleSUR.
