Here are 10 prominent personalities we lost this year.

While they may not be known personally, the passing of celebrities and other prominent individuals is felt by many.

Here are 10 we lost this year.

Number 10. Mike Nichols. The late director is among the few to win a Grammy, an Academy Award, a Tony, and an Emmy. His legendary films include The Graduate and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf. Among his major theatrical projects were Barefoot in the Park and The Odd Couple.

Number 9. Oscar de la Renta. His name has long been synonymous with red carpet glamour and the upper echelons of fashion. De la Renta’s career began when he moved from his home in the Dominican Republic to Spain, where he served as an apprentice to couturier Cristobal Balenciaga.

Number 8. Shirley Temple Black. While known by most as a childhood star, Black spent the bulk of her professional life working as a US diplomat. From 1989 to 1992 she served as the country’s ambassador to Czechoslovakia.

Number 7. Tom Magliozzi. Perhaps you knew him better as one half of the ‘Car Talk’ team. In the 25 years the show was recorded for broadcast on NPR he gave advice on everything from getting the smell of a dead mouse out of a car to loving somebody who drives a junk heap.

Number 6. Joan Rivers. Her life was filled with a lot of laughs, both her own and the ones she induced in others. She got into comedy to pay the rent, she said, because it was “better than typing all day”.

Number 5. Philip Seymour Hoffman. Among the most respected actors of his generation, Hoffman lent his talents to stories told on both screen and stage. He received an Academy Award for his portrayal of the titular character in the film ‘Capote’.

Number 4. Casey Kasem. After spending much of his early career acting, Kasem found his niche when he started doing voiceovers. In 1970 he began hosting his own countdown show, which quickly became a national success.

Number 3. James Garner. The actor’s memorable roles span generations and genres. In the 1950s he starred in the television series ‘Maverick’ and 20 years later played the lead role in ‘The Rockford Files’. More recently he appeared in the very successful film ‘The Notebook’.

Number 2. Sid Caesar. He was doing live televised sketch comedy before that was even a thing. ‘Your Show of Shows’ has since been heralded as one of television’s defining programs.

Number 1. Robin Williams. The inspiring roles he played in films such as ‘Good Will Hunting’ and ‘Dead Poets Society’ will be long remembered, as will his gift for making others smile.

Which prominent personality do you most fondly remember?
