When you see an apple, whether it be green or red, you expect to find light colored fruit underneath its skin.

Those who bite into a Mountain Rose apple, however, get an unusual surprise. The inside of the apples are hot pink.

Tyler Gray is the owner of specialty foods retailer Mikuni Wild Harvest, which sells the apples. According to Gray, the fruit is a major hit at parties and the apples are steadfastly increasing in popularity.

He sold one thousand apples in the first year alone. This year, Gray expects to sell ten thousand Mountain Rose apples.

The company describes the flavor as, "slightly sweet and mildly tart." The apples are said to have an aroma of strawberries and cotton candy. They can be cooked, and afterwards will still maintain their vibrant color.

This type of apple originates from Japan, and they are now grown in the Mount Hood River Valley of Oregon by a few family farms. The season for the apples is short, with them only being available for retail for six weeks.

Three pounds sell for $28.95, which averages out to about 3 dollars per apple.
