Building Infested With Over 100 Million Spiders

Experts estimate that about 107 million spiders occupied Baltimore’s Black River Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Ask the average person what the creepiest thing on Earth is, and many will tell you it’s a spider.

If just one has the power to send a grown human running, and possibly even crying, just imagine how coming face to face with about 107 million would end up.

That’s how many spiders experts estimate occupied Baltimore’s Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant.

With their combined efforts, the arachnid population was able to build a network of webs that covered approximately 4 acres of the building.

It’s unclear how long the spiders had been an issue, but a group of scientists were finally called to assess the situation in 2009.

The team reported that in some places the webs were so dense that they managed to pull 8-foot long fluorescent lighting fixtures out of position.

Heaps of thick, silky ropes were found on the plant’s floor, and the report mentions those resulted from workers pushing webs aside to get to the equipment.

For those who are still having a difficult time wrapping their heads around what over 107 million spiders looks like, thankfully the researchers broke it down.

They estimated that the density of the population came out to just over 35 thousand per cubic meter.
