A ‘family robot’ named Jibo is getting ready for its debut. The robot is a multi-functional masterpiece that can read stories to kids, take messages, set reminders, snap family photos and even recite recipes to make life a little easier for mom and dad.

Jibo has a bulbous shape, stands about a foot tall and weighs as much as an old-school laptop but don’t let all that fool you, the robot is actually quite sophisticated.

Jibo is outfitted with three joints that allow it a very flexible range of motion to follow human family members around where it is placed. The robot is also equipped with facial recognition technology, so that means it can recognize individual relatives.

That aspect is pretty handy. Take for example if it’s a child’s birthday party, Jibo can focus more on the lucky kid rather than snapping photos of everyone else around.

Jibo was designed by MIT Media Lab professor Cynthia Breazeal and the promotional video for the Indiegogo campaign shows what she hopes it will do. She commented “Jibo is this helpful presence that helps support your family, your human network, to be more efficient and feel more connected.”

The robot is scheduled to make a debut in the fall of 2015, when it will sell for $500 to consumers or $600 to developers.
