New $100 Bill on the Way

A new $100 bill is on the way.

Ben Franklin is getting a makeover. The Federal Reserve Board announced that a new 100 dollar bill will begin circulating on October 8th.

It’s loaded with new security features like raised print, detailed watermarks, and, believe it or not, multiple colors.

Vivid orange, shiny gold, and a big blue security strip make it easy to identify and along with the other additions, difficult to counterfeit.

The replacement strategy being implemented by the Federal Reserve will follow the natural lifecycle of paper money.

Bank orders for 100 dollar bills will be filled with the new stuff, old and damaged money will continue to be removed from circulation as usual. No notes will be recalled, devalued, or demonetized.

The average lifespan of a Benjamin is just under 9 years. When it can no longer perform its duties it’s returned home to the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing and shredded.

In 2010 almost 6 billion notes of all denominations were destroyed.
