Who need a racetrack when you can speed along a runway? Recently, Miami International Airport’s south runway became the spot for zooming Lamborghini Aventador Roadster sports cars.

A dozen of the new cars drove across the strip. During the warm up, the vehicles reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

The next spectacle was quite unique as five Lamborghinis tried to surpass the airport's 150 miles per hour maximum take-off speed for planes. An airport official stated “The high-speed test runs exceeded 180 mph, so the cars beat the speed of any aircraft currently taking off from our runways.”

The event was part of the automotive brand’s 50th anniversary and for the unveiling of the new sports car. The upscale car model sells for $445,300. The Roadster features 700 horsepower, allowing it to get from 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds.

Last year, Lamborghini announced production of their $2.6 million model concept vehicle, dubbed the Sesto Elemento. Only 20 of them were slated to be built. Sesto Elemento can go from 0 to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds, however it cannot be driven in the streets. According to Lamborghini’s press release, this vehicle is destined for the track.
