London, Oct 15 : In the late 1970s and early 1980s, India's Punjab state witnessed violence by the separatists who wanted Khalistan, a separate sovereign Sikh state. However, the people of the state rejected them and their demand, and today Punjab is a peaceful and prosperous state. But, the Khalistani separatists settled abroad continue with their efforts to revive militancy and create unrest in Punjab. Recently, they made an attempt to assassinate Lt. Gen. (retd.) Kuldeep Singh Brar, who led the "Operation Bluestar" to flush out terrorists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, in 1984.
