When cities want to upgrade their transportation infrastructure, most of them focus on improving roads for cars.

Copenhagen, on the other hand, is building a superhighway for bicycles.

According to NPR, locals in Copenhagen ride about 750,000 miles on bicycles every day. There are plans to build and expand the system of bicycle paths with 26 new bike only highways that will connect the city with the outlying suburbs.

Many practical innovations are also in store for such highways. For example, if riders maintain a certain consistent speed, they could go all the way into the city without stopping at traffic lights. Another one is placement of pumps along the paths for stranded bikers.

Nearly one third of the city’s population bikes to work or school, and the government wants to encourage more people to ride their bicycles.

But not every city is in favor of bike lanes. Local business owners in Collingwood, Australia have expressed concern over parking issues for customers and employees alike, along with potential loading and unloading problems due to the placement of new bike lanes.

What do you think? Should your city's infrastructure support more cars or bicycles?
