Hi, Im Jason Serious and this is my band the Flea Market Poets.
I come from Baltimore, USA, the land of pleasant living, or so it says on the can of beer, and home to such great freaks as Edgar Allen Poe, Frank Zappa and Jonathan Waters. I was lucky enough to get a good education, but chose ultimately to use it in a less than conventional way. Well, perhaps chose is not the word. I was taken in by the power of songs to connect people. I emigrated to Ireland in 2002 and started to write songs, play in bands around Dublin and travel through Europe. I spent the next few years on the hunt for musicians with similar backgrounds and dispositions, musically or otherwise, because good bands tend to be made up of people who come from the same place, musically or otherwise, right?
So what do I, an art teacher from Donegal, a rockabilly drummer from Texas, a German metal guitarist, and a guy from Surrey (sorry Hazel I don't know who you are yet) all have in common, musically or otherwise?
Well, heres where flea markets come in: we are all of us what you might find digging in a flea market bin random dislocated items, well travelled oddities from all over. Pick out a few things you like, bring them back to your flat, and on a good day: voila they make the room. And so it goes with the Flea Market Poets an ongoing experiment of trying to make original popular music out of the sundry material around us, a sometimes dubious alchemy of hugely dissimilar backgrounds, tastes and influences that, on a good day, makes it better.
The result so far has been a melodic brand of rock occasionally crossing over into punk and roots rock. We have been loosely compared to bands like the Strokes or Wilco, but we mostly try to let each song dictate how it wants to sound, be it rock, punk, country or soul. You could say our music caters to an eclectic palate.
An early break for us came in 2007 when I met Pete Briquette. He was the original bass player in the Boomtown Rats and later became an award-winning producer (Bob Geldof, the Frames, Tricky). I sent him a demo, he liked it and agreed to produce our first single - "Captain Nate".
One and a half years after starting the band we released our debut album Dirty Days in April 2009 in Germany and Austria with Rough Trade. We will release the album in Ireland just prior to a concert tour in the first half of October.
What people are saying about Dirty Days:
Superbly textured stadium rock (Dirty Days), classy indie country (Annie Superstar) and sleek speed-punk (Black Heart)
- Hot Press
Great mix of rock, indie and punk sounds
- Helmet Löwe, koeln.de
Awesome music! Sentimental and beautiful
Tanja Prade, Cool & Fresh
I like it
- Bob Geldof
...and some kind words from people that have tuned in to the album so far...
"it's actually some pretty damn good music... "
Vic, Puerto Rico
"This CD is an awesome mix of what happens when talented artists push themselves in all directions at once"
