This is a helpful hint in determining the size that the foot ring should be. And you can use the inside of your bowl and a set of calipers. These are adjustable calipers. I can use them to position from the inside about where I would like the foot ring to be supporting the bowl and generally that point is where the bowl turns into the floor, sometimes a little narrower, sometimes a little wider. So this gives you a sort of starting point, so that when you turn the bowl over for trimming, you can mark that on the underside and then trim away.
