Auto Talk 101 - Why is the Engine Light On?

When you say engine light, there are actually potentially three different lights we could be talking about. It depends on if it's a red light that says the word “engine.” That usually indicates overheating. And again, when a car's overheating you want to turn it off right away. If it's the yellow “check engine” or it's a little picture of an engine, that indicates that there's a problem with your on board computer system. And that you need to have it checked as soon as possible. It does not mean you need to pull over immediately. I kind of suggest that it's sort of like a traffic light. Red means stop right away. Yellow lights mean something is not right. You better get it checked soon, and of course, green is go. Right? But yes, if your yellow check engine light is on, it means there's a problem in your on board computer system. As long as the car is still running properly, it's totally fine to drive it into your mechanic and have it checked.
