Back in the 1970s, Deutsche Bahn had a sterling reputation that summed up much of what West Germany stood for. The country's trains were reliable, safe and so punctual you could set your watch by them. Today, that reputation is in tatters. Years of cutbacks, aimed at turning a heavily subsidized service into a profit-making enterprise, have quite literally put the brakes on the country's trains - particularly in Berlin.
