Europe Gorbachev Tear Down This Wall
Crowds of people gathered under a rainy Berlin sky at the Bornholmer Strasse bridge on Monday to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The bridge was the first crossing to open on November 9, 1989 following a pivotal moment in the collapse of communism in Europe. As part of the anniversary celebrations, German Chancellor Angela Merkel walked across the bridge with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, former Polish leader Lech Walesa and Berlin's mayor Klaus Wowereit. As the first leader of the reunited Germany, Merkel grew up in the communist east, she retraced her steps on the night the wall fell when she was one of thousands of people who crossed into capitalist West Berlin for the first time. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated Germans on the 20-year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. visit ebrunews.com for more info!
