00:00Okay, so you're driving in your car, and it catches fire.
00:10What do you do?
00:12What did you do?
00:12Yeah, what did you do?
00:14I pulled over.
00:15That's all I would do, too.
00:15Ran on someone's lawn and tried to borrow their phone to call 911.
00:20That's all I would do, I guess.
00:21This dude in Kentucky decided to drive the car right into the river.
00:25Well, I mean...
00:26To extinguish the flames.
00:27I guess if there's no car wash nearer or...
00:31Didn't quite work out for him, though.
00:32Here's the story of this.
00:34This is from Louisville, Kentucky now, from WAVE-TV.
00:38Crews we talked to were surprised the situation ended as well as it did.
00:42Not only did that man survive a burning car,
00:44but he also drifted about a mile and a half down the Ohio River before he was rescued.
00:49Now that man and his car are both safely back on land.
00:54This blew me out of the water, man, okay?
00:57Blown out of the water while the car was pulled from the water.
01:01Darryl Miles was just passing by when he saw the flashing emergency lights near the Cox Park boat ramp,
01:06and he had to stop and watch.
01:08And then I saw everybody standing, and I saw the people down there with the camera.
01:12This can't be good, you know what I'm saying?
01:14He was just one of the people standing around watching the rescue.
01:18The car looked like it had water damage, but just six hours earlier, it was on fire.
01:23Now you know what saved him, right?
01:27Nothing but the man upstairs, bro.
01:31He's cool.
01:32Yeah, he is cool.
01:34Since we've been out here this evening, people have been walking up to us asking the same questions.
01:38We're wondering, why did that man drive into the Ohio River,
01:41and why was the car on fire in the first place?
01:44So far, officials haven't been able to give us those answers, but we'll keep you updated.
01:48What did you see on the scene?
01:49His ass was on fire, so he had to drive into that river real quick.
01:55Was he actually on flames, Darryl?
01:57He was on flames, if that's how you want to put it.
02:00I would say he was on fire, but you want to say on flames, you say on flames, whatever you got to say.
02:06Sorry, I'm trying to piece it all together here, so there was actual flames on him.
02:10He got burned.
02:11There was flames on him, I guess, if that's how you want to describe it.
02:15The flames was on him.
02:16Sorry, you're so cool.
02:17You're intimidating me.
02:18I can't put the words together, Craig.
02:20You got all those gold teeth.
02:21I do have some gold teeth and a crazy hat.
02:24Did you think of going in the water after him?
02:28Hell no.
02:29No, you just don't.
02:30There's no reason to go in the water, baby.
02:31He was floating his ass away.
02:34You didn't think of saving him?
02:35No, no.
02:36I looked at him.
02:38Right.
02:38He gave me a look.
02:39I was like, see you later.
02:41It's up there.
02:43And then, you know whose hands it's in.
02:46So you believe that is a true higher power.
02:49That's right.
02:50Made this all work out.
02:50That's the only way he's alive right now.
02:53With your car, it was the engine, right?
02:56Yeah, the engine caught fire.
02:57So the smoke started coming out through the vents.
03:01Yeah.
03:01That's how I, first all the electrical shut down.
03:04And then smoke started coming out through the vents.
03:06And I realized, oh, hell.
03:07That's scary.
03:08And you're here.
03:09Why?
03:12Nothing but the man upstairs.
03:14I'm done with it.
03:15I'm done.
03:15I'm sorry.
03:16That's it.
03:16I'm done.
03:17I'm overusing it.
03:19That's it.
03:20Why are you here, Dave?
03:21You know why.
03:22It's enough.
03:25Killing it.
03:26Nothing but the man upstairs.
03:31That's it.
03:32Oh, well.
03:33Nothing but the man upstairs.
03:34When you ran to the house, like, how long did you then turn back and look?
03:39And you were like, oh, my God.
03:40Now it's burning.
03:41Yes, because I ran back and pulled my books out.
03:44Okay.
03:44It was my first day at university.
03:46I was on my way to my very first day at university.
03:50Yeah, yeah.
03:51God, this is going to be killer.
03:54I'm going to slay all the bitches.
04:01Oh, man.
04:02I got my own car.
04:04I got my own place to stay.
04:06Stay.
04:09Oh, man.
04:12Here we go.
04:14Thanks, Dad.
04:17Thanks for letting me use the tempo.
04:19Woo!
04:21It's going to be the next Peter Jennings, right?
04:24Yeah.
04:25Time to party.
04:26Woo!
04:27Yeah.
04:28Oh, man.
04:31Crank this up.
04:35This is him cruising down the road.
04:38How close were you to actually getting to the school?
04:41Oh, my God.
04:42No.
04:42I was five minutes away from our house.
04:45That was one song into his road trip.
04:48First song.
04:50Got his shades on.
04:53Oh, yeah.
04:55Got my books.
04:59Yeah, yeah.
05:00Got my shades and my books.
05:04I bought this 25-pack of condoms.
05:08I am ready.
05:11Help!
05:12Help!
05:13My help, my God, help!
05:17Oh, man.
05:18They don't build them like that anymore, do they?
05:20No, they don't.
05:21They really don't.
05:21They really don't.
05:23I own that Ford Tempo.
05:25No joke.
05:25My dad gave it to me the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Yeah, I was like, boy.
05:30This was Tuesday.
05:31Yes.
05:32I had that Ford Tempo for two days, officially in my name.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Yep.
05:37Two days.
05:37How did you get to school?
05:39I took the bus.
05:41My future was not that.
05:43It's not so cool when I'm on the bus listening to this.
05:45What's the bus song?
05:46We have a bus song.
05:47I don't know.
05:49But we over on the bus song.
05:50He smelled like smoke.
05:51I bet he smelled incredibly like smoke.
05:53See, the bus smelled like smoke.
05:57Oh, yeah, everything.
05:59All of his stuff.
06:00All my books, everything.
06:01University stuff.
06:02Well, more like the horrible smell of a burning tempo.
06:05Oh, yeah.
06:06It's like it's.
06:06Plastic.
06:07Oh, deadly chemical fire.
06:09That's a car that looks like it would set fire.
06:11Oh, yes.
06:12Oh, my God.
06:12Yeah.
06:13I think I one time Googled Ford Tempo fires, and there was a shocking amount of them.
06:17Oh, well.
06:19Yeah.
06:20Look.
06:21Oh, recall over fire danger.
06:24Largest voluntary recall ever by a single one.
06:27Oh, yeah.
06:28Yep.
06:28There we go.
06:29Oh, there's Dave's.
06:30There's Dave's car.
06:31That's it.
06:32Oh, my God.
06:32The shell of Dave's car.
06:34Oh, there's a blue one.
06:37That was very upsetting.
06:38Yeah.
06:39Very upsetting.
06:39Oh, man.
06:41It was.
06:41I was like, woo-hoo, fifth day of school.
06:44Freedom.
06:45The open road.
06:47What's that smell?
06:49Help!
06:49Ah, my blinker's not working.
06:51I don't know.
06:52Keep going.
06:52Windchill wiper stopped because it was raining.
06:54Windchill wiper stopped.
06:55Oh, man.
06:55Radio fades away.
06:57Oh, God.
06:58I better pull over.
06:58What the hell?
06:59I didn't know what to do with a car then.
07:01I couldn't tell you.
07:01No.
07:02I just thought I'd drive on the side road to be safer, and then that's when it all ended.
07:06Yeah.
