00:00For the first time in 15 years, Matthew Parovic had to get a housemate.
00:07Mainly because rent was going up, a much bigger jump than I'm used to.
00:11He says despite now having a higher salary, he's got less money left over at the end of a pay cycle.
00:18And not really being able to explain why when the increase of activities or food hasn't changed.
00:25Matthew Parovic lives within the South Australian electorate of Boothby in Adelaide's southern suburbs.
00:32It's one of the state's two swing seats, stretching from the beaches in the west to the foothills in the east.
00:39According to the 2021 census, about 175,000 people live in the electorate.
00:46Another of those residents is David Schilling.
00:49I'm actually really excited to be in such an electorate which is so close.
00:55He's worried the high cost of housing means his kids won't have the same opportunities he did.
01:01When I bought my first house I was 21 and it was in Hobart and I bought it for $73,000 which today sounds ridiculous.
01:12These days it's completely unaffordable for most kids.
01:16And he doesn't feel too impressed by the two major party candidates for Boothby.
01:21Nicole Flint for the Liberals and Labor's Louise Miller-Frost.
01:25So it's really about the more macroeconomic and social policies that they put forward.
01:32It's really nothing about the local politics.
01:35Concerns over the cost of living and housing are shared by others in the electorate.
01:40You see so many people going around with calculators these days and working out exactly what they've put in.
01:47Because I'm away for such long periods of time and they come back, I do notice it a bit more dramatically I guess when I come back.
01:53The federal election will be held on May 3rd.
