A body found inside a burnt-out vehicle in Sydney's south west is believed to be that of a mother, brutally assaulted and kidnapped by a group of armed men overnight. The woman was allegedly dragged out of her home and into a car while her 8-year-old son was attacked. It's an incident New South Wales police are describing as "horrendous" with an "unheard of level of violence".

00:00A quiet suburban street woken by sirens. Firefighters extinguish a car found a blaze inside a heartbreaking discovery.
00:12Unfortunately last night firefighters did discover the remains of a person in the cabin of the vehicle.
00:19The vehicle was found on Welfare Avenue in the southwest Sydney suburb of Beverly Hills around 11.30 last night.
00:26About an hour earlier police had responded to an armed kidnapping at an Edwards Street home in Bankstown approximately six kilometres away.
00:34A group of up to five men all dressed in black with their faces covered had arrived at the location in a number of vehicles.
00:43Inside the home was a 45 year old woman and her two children aged 15 and 8.
00:49The 45 year old female was forcibly removed from the home.
00:54She was kidnapped and forced into the back seat of the dark coloured SUV.
01:00We just hear the shouting of the neighbour and then three or four loud banging like that.
01:08Police strongly believe the body found in the burnt car is that of the kidnapped mother.
01:13During this assault the eight year old child was also severely assaulted and hit in the head by one of the males who was armed with a baseball bat.
01:22A firearm was also produced.
01:25Both children were taken to hospital where the eight year old had emergency surgery and was placed into an induced coma.
01:31The family isn't well known to police but detectives have said the level of violence and planning shown by the men indicate it was likely a targeted attack.
01:51Police don't yet know what motivated it or whether it's gang related.
01:55That will all form part of the investigation to try and identify who has done this and why it's happened.
02:01The children's father was interstate at the time of the assault and is returning to Sydney.
02:06This level of violence is horrendous, it is confronting but we are going to do our best day in day out to bring these people to justice.
