00:00Yes, sir. Ski. What up, man? It's Wild 94.1. Joey Franchise here.
00:04My man. Well, first up, I'm in the presence of two GOATs right now.
00:09We got L.A. the GOAT and we got the GOAT JD. What's poppin'?
00:12What's happening?
00:14Yo, yo.
00:15Yeah.
00:17L.A., what's good, my guy?
00:19What's going on, Joe?
00:22You know the vibes, man. We just out here maintaining.
00:25My man's got the eight bands going up on the radio right now.
00:28I mean, it must be a hell of a feeling now to hear that joint in rotation like that.
00:33In your city.
00:35No cap. No cap. No cap.
00:39So tell me, man, JD, I want to ask you, what did you see in L.A. that made you want to pursue it?
00:44I know it was on your IG Live a while back.
00:48You were feeling the record. You would talk about how you was feeling the record.
00:50So what made you push the button on it?
00:53Well, really, he was freestyling over money and a thing, right?
00:56So a lot of people can't get on that beat, you know what I mean?
01:00Like a lot of new artists ain't really like they can't.
01:03That ain't they flow and they try to make it seem like, you know, it's old or whatever.
01:07And that ain't that ain't our thing.
01:09So to hear a young cat doing that without having my influence or me knowing him or anything,
01:16he started having his people hit me up, like having all his people go to JD Page and hit him up.
01:22So I started looking at my phone like, what's going on?
01:26Who is this? What is this? What's going on?
01:27What is this goat situation?
01:28They was putting all these goats in my chat, right?
01:32So I'm like, what the hell is this?
01:33Right. So I checked it out and he actually was, you know, he was he was flowing to the beat.
01:38So I was like, I was impressed by that.
01:41Just like off the rip, like he he was saying something and he was actually rocking to the beat.
01:46So then I was like, let me just check it out and see what else he got on his page.
01:49I went to his page and I heard the eight bands and I'm like, this sound like a song already like this.
01:55Like, you know what I mean?
01:56Like it sounded so familiar, like one, because of the sample, but it also sounded like it was crafted,
02:01like it was already a record that was out.
02:02So I was just like, this must be out already.
02:06So I checked it out and I just kept, you know, I watched the video and I'm just like, you know, this,
02:10that's how a lot of times this is how I found my talent.
02:13You know what I mean?
02:14I find talent by being on the Internet and really, really listening and checking.
02:18And nobody, nobody told me about him.
02:20It was just basically his and I interaction.
02:24And I went to his page and checked it out.
02:26And I'm like, if this ain't out, it need to be out immediately.
02:30Facts.
02:31You know what I'm saying?
02:31So that's all it was.
02:33That was the gas right there.
02:35And I felt that same energy you did as soon as I heard the record and I saw the video for it.
02:39I'm like, this kid's from Tampa?
02:41So, L.A., I got to ask you real quick, man.
02:44What made you jump on, you know, Money Anything?
02:47You know, being from Tampa, the vibes is different down south.
02:49And, you know, you got that southern hospitality.
02:51And, well, J.D.'s from the south.
02:53He knows the deal.
02:54And, I mean, what made you choose that beat?
02:56Such a classic record.
02:57You got two goats on there with Hov and J.D.
02:59What went through your mind when you was doing that?
03:04I don't know.
03:05Well, basically, it was just like, it was one of the beats on YouTube that you feel me?
03:09Today, everybody's like call themselves freestyling with their little manic little verses on Instagram and stuff.
03:14But I'm more, like, passionate about it.
03:17Like, if you say you're freestyling, you got to really be freestyling.
03:21So, like, I be picking the more difficult beats to rap on.
03:26And, like, when that part of the suggestion thing, I'm like, whoa.
03:32Because I actually heard it during your mix in the afternoon one time.
03:35I was like, boy, that would be crazy, that instrumental on YouTube.
03:38And I went and searched it.
03:39And I was like, man, I'm finna get on it.
03:41But, you know, since it's being J.D. B., I was like, man, I'm gonna have him at J.D.
03:45if he come and repost it or something.
03:47But it was kind of like the domino reaction.
03:50Oh, this was going on now.
03:52So, it was a blessing.
03:54Shout out to L.A. for that, man.
03:56Like, it is, it's crazy how the internet works, man.
04:01And J.D., you know, an artist like of his caliber just landed on your lap like that.
04:05And I know you've seen his work ethic and seeing him on the IG Lives and how busy he gets.
04:10Like, I remember waking up in the morning and this guy's just, you know, he's just flowing.
04:13He's just spinning, like, effortlessly.
04:15I mean, do you feel like that's a lost craft in this generation that we're in right now with music and rap?
04:20Oh, yeah, 100%.
04:21Because, I mean, you know, it's not a lot of artists that come out wanting to show this, right?
04:26You know what I mean?
04:26Like, me and L.A. had a conversation about, like, last month, he wanted to go to Philly and get on with Cosmic Cab.
04:33And just, like, then when Cosmic Cab hit everybody at Def Jam, like, yo, the boy really can rap, right?
04:41Then, then, then L.A. hit me, like, J.D. call flex, call up, you know what I'm saying?
04:47He start, you know, he want that smoke, right?
04:50That ain't usual in this time period that we in right now.
04:54There's a lot of artists that's scared to get up on that mic and, you know what I'm saying, when they get that pressure like that.
04:59So, that's, like I said, that's something that I didn't know he had in him.
05:04So, to see it in him now, it just feels like, damn, I really found something special, you know?
05:10Facts.
05:11And, you know, with Florida being, like, a melting pot for a lot of artists, he sticks out like a sore thumb because I don't, I've never, and respectfully, I've never seen anybody with that type of energy that he brings to the mic.
05:22Like, in L.A., I got to ask you, man, where does that all stem from, man?
05:24What were you, you know, what were these records, or who have you been watching, you know, growing up and coming up that, you know, you actually were influenced by in that style and embracing the freestyle?
05:38I don't know, because it's, like, it's a lot of people that freestyle that you would never, like, think that they really do freestyle.
05:44And, like, like, growing up, me and my granddad used to listen to the Michael Jackson, like, vinyls on the record player and stuff.
05:52And then, like, as I got older, I seen, like, Michael Jackson was punching in when he was making songs.
05:57Like, he ain't sitting down there writing, he just saying what comes to his heart and mind.
06:01So, like, Michael Jackson, you got the Drake, because Drake's, like, crazy when it comes to, like, writing something down because the tension and shit is just ridiculous.
06:08And then, like, as far as, like, the freestyling, it's just always something I like to do in my spare time and then, like, watching them smack DVDs, not being from up to, not being able to know, like, how they actually do it.
06:18I didn't know back then that they were writing.
06:20So, I'm trying to do what they doing, like, amongst my friends, but all the time for here, because that's how I think they're coming.
06:25So, that's what kind of, like, triggered it.
06:27And then, like, once Lil Snoop, like, kind of got big off of it, I was like, man, I could do that, too.
06:33So, I started, like, really pushing that more than the music.
06:36But I could always make good music, it's just it wasn't time for me to make music at the time, I think.
06:43That's what's up.
06:44And, L.A., I got to ask, too, you know, what was it like getting that phone call, getting that co-sign from J.D., and, you know, you being on board and, you know, him getting behind what you got going on?
06:55I ain't gonna lie.
06:56It was the same because it was like I grew up watching them, and you feel me, all the artists he done put out and the artists he done work with.
07:03So, it is dope.
07:06But it's like, I'm excited, but I'm also eager, like, I'm ready to go ahead and get it, let's go tennis, like, master gas.
07:14But we be working, we be working.
07:17He's telling me we got to face it, we got to face it, we can't just see them as fast.
07:21No, it's definitely a good look for the city, man.
07:23We're definitely proud of you over here.
07:24And J.D., man, like, you know, it's really rare sometimes to see you kind of, you know, work with, like, the younger guys.
07:33Because, you know, I feel like a lot of the guys is just kind of hard to work with, and they kind of move at their own pace.
07:37Because, you know, a lot of them may feel like they know it all.
07:40Well, that's the kind of perception I get.
07:41So, tell me, what is it that you look for when you're pursuing artists?
07:48I mean, you know, you got to be honest, you know, I wasn't even actually looking for, I wasn't looking for him.
07:55You know what I mean, like, they hit me, like, you know what I mean?
07:59I'm always looking for talent, though, but I wasn't looking for him at the time.
08:03And, you know, like I said, I had to tread water because I ain't really, I was excited about it, but I didn't know if he was signed.
08:10I didn't want to play me like, dog, you're a dollar short, you know what I mean?
08:14You know what I mean?
08:15A day late.
08:15Right.
08:16So, I was just like, I was just trying to see how it was going to go.
08:19And, you know, he hit me like, what we going to do with it?
08:22And I'm like, oh, what you talking about?
08:23You ain't signing?
08:24He's like, nah.
08:24So, then it was like, you know what I mean?
08:26I start just having a conversation with him.
08:28I realized, like, yeah, he a student of the game.
08:31That's one of the things I think that, you know, more or less than anything that these younger artists that you're talking about, I don't think they really studied the game.
08:39Like he just said right now, he be watching Smack DVDs.
08:42And he from Tampa, right?
08:44So, a lot of people don't probably even understand what he's talking about, but that's like, that's a training.
08:50That's like a school, you know what I mean?
08:51And he thought they was freestyling.
08:54So, he tried to start his skills up.
08:56Like, I'm listening to him say that right now.
08:57This is the first time I ever heard him say that.
08:59That's making me realize this guy's a different type of animal.
09:04Because in his mind, what he doing, ain't nobody else even doing that.
09:09You know what I'm saying?
09:09Because he done pushed himself to a space that ain't even a real space.
09:13You understand what I'm saying?
09:14Right.
09:15That's a training, you know what I mean?
09:16And that's what I'm saying.
09:17And it was like little things like that.
09:19That's what I found.
09:19Like, when I started talking to him, even before we even got the deal going, we was just talking, conversating, trying to figure out how he was going to work it out.
09:26And I just started hearing, like, little stuff that he was doing.
09:29I'm like, oh, Holmes really, really, he on a whole different bag.
09:33So, I mean, you know, I like that.
09:35You know what I'm saying?
09:36He pushed me to go harder.
09:38You know what I'm saying?
09:39Like, you see he got a little bait on today.
09:41You know what I'm saying?
09:42Oh, yeah, I see that.
09:43I see.
09:43Y'all both styling over there.
09:45I see y'all.
09:46He tried to come out on me.
09:48You know what I'm saying?
09:48So, I just, you know what I mean?
09:50I got to step it up on him because he trying to come out on me.
09:53Oh, my God.
09:55It's so dope that, like, he put that battery in your back, man.
09:59Being a legend already, bro.
10:00I mean, shoot.
10:01I mean, bro, it's like, you're JD.
10:04You know what I mean?
10:04Like, in hip-hop, we look at you, you're an icon.
10:07That's the first thing we think of.
10:09No, no doubt.
10:09And it's a pleasure to have you here.
10:11And it's a pleasure that, you know, you got Tampa on board with you.
10:14This is amazing.
10:15Have you guys connected yet to, like, in person with all the COVID stuff going on?
10:20Have y'all worked in the studio together yet?
10:22No, we ain't got a chance to work in the studio yet.
10:24But that's coming real, real soon.
10:26You know what I mean?
10:26We just want – I really, like I said, once I put my mind on getting this done,
10:32I just really wanted to make sure the deal was right.
10:34You know what I'm saying?
10:34And, like, I was telling him, like, I know a couple of times he probably didn't even
10:38believe that I was going to even make it happen.
10:41But I kept – you know what I mean?
10:42I knew what I wanted to do.
10:44And I knew that – I know it's a space for this.
10:46And the one thing that I love about this that I could always, like, pat myself on the back
10:54is that everybody else that I hear talk about him, they had the same comments to make.
10:59You – we did an interview earlier today.
11:02Like I said, Cosmic Kevin, everybody that's done coming to acquaintance with him,
11:05they all had the same conversation.
11:07So I'm like, okay, JD, you, you know, you know, as I'm talking to myself, I'm like,
11:12boy, you done found one, you know what I'm saying?
11:15But – so I feel real good about it.
11:17So I can't – by the time we get in the studio with each other, you know, this shit
11:21going to be wild.
11:22It's going to be crazy because he got the energy.
11:25He got the energy that's going to feed me to make me go crazy.
11:28And then hopefully that energy go back his way.
11:31You know what I'm saying?
11:32You know, and the cool thing, man, is he's calm, cool, collected, and he's just eager to work.
11:36And, you know, let alone, you know, being signed with you in Dev Jam, it's like, you know,
11:41he knows he's got to hit the pedal and, you know, put that foot on the gas.
11:45In L.A., man, I got to ask you, brother, you know, JD's got the – you know,
11:48his contact list is crazy in that phone.
11:50That phone is a crazy phone.
11:52Is there anybody you need him to push the button on, bro?
11:55Are you looking forward to pushing the button as you – as y'all keep building this relationship?
12:00Oh, we already did, Jack.
12:02Like, we already done push the button on something.
12:05He ain't going to really keep talking.
12:06We going to push the P button, you feel me?
12:09So, we already done did that, you know what I mean?
12:13Like I said, he – L.A., L.A., the one thing I will say is that, you know,
12:17he know he got it.
12:18He know he got a deal.
12:20You know, like I said, I wanted to do this, these calls with the radio station,
12:23let the city know because I had seen some messages where people was like,
12:26they acting like they ain't never heard him or they was like, who is this dude?
12:30J.D. done came out here and signed, and almost like I just rolled up on somebody
12:36that wasn't even popping like that.
12:37So, I just want to make sure – I make sure everybody in the city,
12:40they got their mind right and understand.
12:42I'm in the city, and I see what's happening,
12:45and my dude is the one that's happening right now.
12:47So, let's surround him.
12:50Everybody in Tampa, let's make it go where it's got to go.
12:53Let's believe, man.
12:54We are tapped in for sure, man.
12:56We got that joint running in the mix show right now.
12:58So, man, we're going to keep running that eight bands.
13:00It's all up, baby.
13:01We got it.
13:01Yo, J.D., yo, L.A., I appreciate y'all taking the time.
13:04I mean, I'm looking forward to what y'all got going on in the future for real.
13:07No doubt.
13:07No doubt.
13:08Great look for the city.
13:09Yes, sir.
13:09Bye-bye.
13:10Bye-bye.
