00:00welcome to bermuda a small island paradise in the middle of the atlantic
00:07seeing the turquoise waters it does lift my mood we'll go along the coast okay see you up there
00:13a dedicated police service
00:17somebody's gonna need to open this door pretty quickly is keeping this british overseas territory
00:22safe i think he wears the uniform very well you want the 20 now officers including brits doing
00:31their duty it's tough and it's really humid today the reality is there are challenges
00:40crime busting in a place where anything can happen i didn't really expect the cows to run out the gate
00:46uh-oh going to great lengths to catch criminals
00:54oh she's going going she's gone cannot make this up with summer tourists arriving in droves
01:03this is peak season for the police listen calm down i love policing it's in my dna
01:12on police business in bermuda there's a raid to save some puppies hello animal control you need
01:22to come to the door now or we're going to make a fourth entry a hunt for a road tour guide at a
01:28beauty spot the person we're looking for is not her so we we can walk around and just um see if it's
01:34done further and a battle of the sexes at a broken down car it's okay jen let the men work i know
01:41apparently a lot of people assume because i'm female i don't know how to do it
01:52ready so central to the work of the bermuda police service is the canine unit today it's search
02:01practice for police dog roni we'll hide the drugs and then i'll either let the dog off lead and let
02:08them hunt for the drugs or i'll keep them on lead and practice searching the room bermudan officer
02:13robin mcnab's love of dogs led her to become a handler three years ago you have to treat them with
02:20respect you have to treat them with love when i work i'm with my dog every day all day it's just me
02:26and him in the car usually handlers work alone we don't have a human partner so he listens to me
02:32crush people out and stuff come on buddy is he pooping no come on no i take it he didn't poop this
02:47morning no but it's not just drugs that the dogs unit must sniff out we will get called to a prowler
02:55or if there is a breaking in progress if we hear that there's a 10 45 which is a police pursuit
03:01we'll start making our way towards that area we do a lot of pre-planned warrants today there's a
03:07warrant being executed at a house suspected of illegally breeding pit bulls my worst fear going
03:14on a dog warrant finding the dogs hurt or ill or neglected i've been to one where the dogs looked
03:22like skeletons and they were so weak it breaks my heart i've you know been in tears before
03:31there are eight police officers and dog wardens briefed at the location ready to go the issue is
03:38that one illegal litter of six can turn into a hundred dogs pretty quickly and the last thing
03:44you want is feral pit bulls it's a small island and then especially for restricted breeds you can
03:49have these breeds but you have to make sure you're following certain conditions like have an outdoor
03:52kennel have a secure fencing to make sure that restricted breeds especially aren't getting out and
03:58wandering and you know hurting people killing other people's animals you have to apply for a special
04:02license and they will come and inspect your home and make sure that you have the right requirements but if
04:07you can do that then you can absolutely have a restricted dog but getting a license is expensive
04:14without one it risks a raid from the police first the police need to locate with the landlord's help
04:22where the dogs actually are has anybody spoken to you yeah no worries all right cool no worries
04:32just want to make sure you understand what's going on
04:34that was the landlord and his advice is that the dogs in question are located downstairs in a lower
04:40apartment so now they're just trying to make contact with any of the occupants
04:45hello animal control you need to come to the door now or we're going to make a forced entry
04:49somebody's going to need to open this door pretty quickly
04:51inside the house they discover six pitbull puppies kept with their mother
05:13they're probably not eight weeks yet i wouldn't think because they're still here it's super sweet
05:21that's the hard part despite officer robin's worst fears the puppies have been kept in good conditions
05:30the house is fun they're being taken care of um they're clean and they're they look really healthy
05:35um i didn't go through the whole house but where they are they're in like a little fenced in area with their
05:42mom
05:48she's very nervous
05:51charges are being prepared for the illegal dog breeder
05:55it's been a good result for officer robin and the team but they're fighting an uphill battle
06:01there's been an underground dog breeding network here in bermuda for quite a while obviously like
06:05most countries it's much the same as anywhere else but in bermuda you tend to see it a lot more because
06:09it's a small community so a pit bull gets loose everybody knows about it everybody sees it and
06:15everything happens in very close proximity so we need to stay on top of it as best we can
06:22it's very difficult i'd stick them all in here but i've already been instructed by my husband
06:28no more dogs i have two at home as well so yeah we're full
06:36obviously i want to take them all home just because i don't know if they're going to find
06:40homes for them if they can find homes for them so that that's difficult
06:57so we are currently on our way to look out for any traffic offenses anything like that
07:22i'm punching in different number plates of different cars and bikes just to see if we've
07:27got any of the past that are unlicensed or uninsured let's see this lady riding this bike it might be
07:35uninsured and unlicensed so we're just going to double check
07:38oh she's gone she's gone with so many alleyways and cut throughs in bermuda that a police car can't
07:48access a rider can often make a quick escape is that her yeah
08:03they're grateful that the rider eventually stops for them great place
08:08although perhaps it's not best on a corner thank you thank you thank you there we go
08:18is it the right one yeah good day how you doing today could you turn off your vehicle for me
08:23the reason why you've been pulled over is because your bike is showing up that is uninsured and
08:27unlicensed i'm writing a ticket for the no license bike she's claiming at the moment that she has got
08:32insurance so we're just checking to see if not she'll get two tickets with a ticket for 250 already
08:39to pay for an unlicensed bike if you don't pay within seven days you will be expected to attend
08:44court the rider needs to provide proof of insurance so she doesn't get another one do you have email on
08:51your phone or if someone can send it to you it's important for people to be insured people get into
08:56collisions and they don't have insurance that's not fair on the other party involved so it's just really
09:01important to manage that otherwise it can become complicated further down the line for people
09:06if you can show us the proof of insurance then you just get the one ticket for today
09:11most of the time people definitely try and make you believe that their insurance is fine and if
09:16they produce it in front of us then obviously we won't issue it how's the insurance coming along
09:24you got it here yeah this is the paperwork
09:27finally officers jen and dashon have had enough waiting and issue a further ticket for no insurance
09:37all right so i'm not saying that we don't believe you however you're just going to get issued a further
09:41ticket for the insurance uh if you're able to prove that the bike is indeed insured you can just bring
09:48that to court on your court date given and then that ticket will be taken away so this one you will have
09:54to attend court for all right with a ticket issued for no insurance the woman should not be riding
09:59her bike on the roads i'll advise you not to ride it because you can get another ticket if seen again
10:07and certainly not in front of the two police officers who just ticketed her can't tell you
10:11what to do but that's just my advice i mean i'm not too far from her she actually lived around the corner
10:18from where we'd stopped her so i guess in her mind she was probably like well let me just get it home
10:23all right well i gave you my advice
10:29you know you can advise someone but whether they actually choose to listen to that or not
10:32if she does get pulled over by another unit they can pull her over and give her another ticket
10:36regardless of whether we have or not we advised her not to ride the bike because she was obviously
10:40uninsured and unlicensed i was surprised i don't know whether she just wanted to get away from the
10:44situation but most of the time people will listen and they will leave their bike but not get straight
10:52on it and ride off but the rider has encountered officers jen and dashawn in a forgiving mood
10:59we were well within our rights to ticket her again however you know when it comes to ticketable
11:03offences down to the officer's discretion and you know we're not here to harass her however if she
11:09is stopped by another unit then she is uh likely to get another ticket for the exact same offence as we
11:15pulled her over for it was a good traffic stop we just have to use our discretion anyway she's already
11:25ticketed you know why why twist the knife
11:39tourism is one of bermuda's biggest industries responsible for creating almost 3 000 local
11:45jobs and bringing in millions in revenue can't even quantify how proud i am to be
11:52a bermudian i'm just i love it officer chris douglas has worked in the police for 11 years
11:59we even have a song called proud to be bermudian i'm not a singer
12:03today he's patrolling blue hole hill with officers krishna singh and james eli
12:13it's very peaceful honor they're here to look for a local who's already known to the police
12:19he's been making money by acting as a tour guide without the correct qualifications
12:24he's been in the area here
12:26impersonating a tour guide and there's some concerns as to him directing visitors probably
12:34in places that he shouldn't be bermudians rely on the tourism industry so we definitely need to make
12:39sure that our visitors are happy they're safe and they have a good time they come back and tell all
12:44their friends police have encountered the road tour guide before two weeks ago we snuck up on him and oh
12:50boy he looked like a during headlights i said what are you doing here he says oh i'm just talking to
12:54the young lady giving him some history i said you're not supposed to be doing that you know you could
12:58be giving this lady the wrong information i told him to leave the area which he did it's not illegal in
13:04bermuda to impersonate a registered tour guide julie pitt is an official one it's recommended that you do
13:11the uh blue flag course okay and that tells you all about bermuda and stuff like that it's like a little test
13:16you have to do that or you don't have to it's recommended that you do it julie knows how
13:21important it is for guides to give tourists a great experience some people are just bringing it
13:27and then people come back and they're like what was that we want everybody to be on the same path
13:32so that we can tell great stories about our bermuda thank you so much for that you're welcome thank you
13:37it's also a matter of keeping tourists safe so this is one of the actual caves here in bermuda
13:42obviously they've got it fenced off because they don't want to make sure nobody goes down
13:45plus it's dangerous because it's slippery so this is one of the reasons why you should know
13:50the area and know what's protected and what's not as a actual tour guide the main thing is injury
13:56you can run that risk of a person getting injured so you really don't want them to come down here
14:05next they check a local diving spot you know my years of being a bermuda i've never done that
14:11really no never so the person we're looking for is not her so we we can walk around and just um see
14:18if it's done further have fun everyone take care everybody enjoy your time here thank you
14:24i love this area me too actually hello everybody the officers explore the rest of the park in the
14:31sunshine i'm sorry you can never take the beauty from this island while also keeping an eye out for the
14:37suspect of course the troublemakers are that way oh that's not you oh i'm innocent i'm dry oh the guilty
14:45ones say that yeah man he's not on this side you are oh that lady just pointed you out she said dirty
14:57troublemakers it's been a good day for the officers patrolling this piece of paradise
15:04as this holiday in new york city cop has observed i might transfer over why not why not hey hey we're
15:11looking we're looking what's the salaries uh 70k started 70k start wow that's more than nypd first
15:20but a loaf of bread here in bermuda is seven dollars
15:26the police may not have found the rogue tour guide today but officer krishna is pretty confident that
15:32they've done their job i think word travels quite quickly in bermuda very quickly so i know he knows
15:41that we are looking for him and these things go the long way in a small community and i think that
15:47has made a big impact
16:00it's one month since the pitbull puppies were rescued from the home of an illegal breeder
16:06high time that officer robin checked up on them i haven't seen them since they were seized so i'm
16:12excited to see how big they've gotten and how well they're doing i'm a dog person so i've been thinking
16:18about them since they've been gone wondering how they're doing and you just you know you want to
16:22cuddle them you want to make sure they're okay so i'm really really excited to see them okay dog
16:28warden sean pedro and taeej butler have brought the puppies to a local nature reserve from the pound hey
16:35robin how are you i'm good how are you doing oh i'm so excited to see the puppies yeah look how big
16:39they've gotten bigger they're so big hi hardly recognizable now there's so much calmer now oh they
16:46look fantastic mr butler i've been taking good care of them yeah do you remember this lady is this a
16:51female hello oh no oh no you might just have to come in my car this is a nice police lady that came to save
16:57you hello probably just over two months now so they're really all starting to come into their own
17:03individual personalities individual colors and you're really starting to get to see what you got
17:07you are very calm you can see you're getting very big with space in the pound at a premium
17:13there is pressure to move them on has there been any interest in homes for them all of our foster
17:18homes are currently full it's hard finding foster care for restricted breed dogs a lot of people want
17:24to help but not a lot of people want to go and spend the four or eight thousand dollars for fencing
17:28yeah or a couple thousand dollars for a kennel so it does limit our ability to sort of rehome them
17:35and shelter them we're gonna go play they give the puppies a chance to stretch their legs
17:41and chase the wild chickens it's a puppy tea party okay don't eat the chicken don't eat the chicken
17:59oh my goodness playing in the park is being appreciated by the puppies and officers alike
18:06we've just had a really really busy week within the police service so it's very nice for me
18:12to have a distraction like this that's for sure i didn't realize how much i needed this
18:17i know you deal with dogs every day but you probably don't get to just kind of roll around
18:20and play with them you know we never do they play with puppies i think maybe that should be like
18:24a weekly thing for police officers puppy therapy i've always loved dogs we had boxers when i was
18:31growing up you really create a bond with them so i don't know i i sometimes dogs are better than
18:38people honestly and your dogs are always happy to see you your dogs just want love and attention and
18:45care and if you give that to them then they're gonna be happy to see you and make you happy as well
18:51my dogs at home i think they can sense it when you're down and they'll come and give you a cuddle
18:55or you know just kind of give you that peace that you might need and a distraction from what might
19:01be going on during the day they may be struggling to rehome the pups but they're still optimistic
19:08so we're obviously very hopeful that all of them are going to get homes and as cute as they are
19:12there's absolutely no reason why they shouldn't yeah especially so young they have such a great
19:18personality oh they're so fantastic all of them are just heavenly even the temperament the camels as
19:24far as eating together you know what i'm saying no resource garden at all oh that's perfect very
19:29nice to each other they're not they're not just not going to be aggressive dogs no guarding of food
19:34none of that stuff just getting attached can be difficult i'm sure well that's the thing is it's
19:39very easy to get attached to them there's a fine line between you know caring and loving and feeling
19:44and then you know winding up with compassion fatigue for sure because compassion fatigue can be a real
19:48killer especially in this job oh for sure
19:53okay puppy it's time to go back into your little crate playtime's over if there is no new owner found
20:02and they do not have the capacity to keep the dogs they will euthanize them i don't blame the wardens i
20:08completely understand what they have to do and i support them but it's still for a dog lover it's like
20:14it breaks my heart yeah the wardens will be working overtime to make sure the puppies do find homes
20:31back in the west officers jen and deshawn have been on the eye out for more traffic infringements
20:37when an elderly local finds himself in need of some help so we were sitting static because we
20:43were doing some more traffic control as we were sitting there this gentleman came up to us and
20:48informed us that unfortunately his tire is gone and asked for assistance that tire blew that's all
20:54i could tell you that the tire blew and i was right here and i pulled over and i checked this and
20:59this is what he came up with i'm glad i'm got a spirit tire in the back officer jen joined the
21:05police service more than two years ago i wanted to help people so obviously being in the place is a
21:12good way of being able to do that i never thought that i could be a police officer because of being
21:17female everyone sees a police and they want to be the big burly you know but there's a different
21:21sides of policing so to be able to just help people in that circumstance makes you feel good i
21:26appreciate the police more and more now bermuda police is not that's about arresting people
21:33exactly getting the flat tire off is proving tricky but jen can do the burly work when she needs to
21:41let me see if i can't scrape now no i'm definitely happy to get stuck in it's never been an issue i was
21:47always a bit of a tomboy growing up so getting my hands dirty and whatnot is it's not really a big
21:52deal i'm just gonna move the whole time that's the problem you sweat through any job that you're
21:58attending you know any anything that you do you just sweat through it and you kind of i just think to
22:03myself if i'm sweating everyone else is sweating so it's not like just one of us okay let me it's all
22:09let me grab it i think we'll get it they're doing a good job sister however jen's burly work isn't
22:16being appreciated by everyone you're a female but you got a chance to try everything
22:24the gentleman with the tire we were changing slowly started to usher me out of the way i didn't mind
22:29you know i sometimes you've got to let people do their thing a lot of people assume because i'm
22:33female i don't know how to do it however i do have a vehicle of my own um so i've had to do it myself
22:39at times and also this is not the first time i've asked for us been asked for assistance to change tires
22:46say you think it okay there you go there you go say what i loosened it for you okay let's pull this
22:53thing off you see what the women have loosened you i'll let them do their thing it's i wasn't upset
23:00about it sometimes they just need to feel that they can handle it and i don't want to make them feel
23:05any sort of way so in that circumstance i was like do you know what let me just take a step back you want
23:10me to do some i'm on my moves there jen oh there you go it's okay it's okay it's okay jen let the
23:16men work i know apparently jen's hands-on approach may not be fully appreciated here but she knows that
23:24in many policing situations she always has the edge dealing with children dealing with domestics things
23:32like that sometimes people respond better so in that sense obviously it's sometimes it's just
23:37nice having the balance of both male and female so i'm going to put your tire in the back of the car
23:42okay yeah just leave it there sweetheart sometimes you've got to learn to step back and you know so
23:49i'm going to just step back and let them do their to let them do their thing
23:52it was a macho moment for them for sure well enjoy your dinner rest of your day have a good
23:59dinner all right all right you take care okay thank you guys have a good one see you
24:06yeah it's safe to go take care guys enjoy your evening
24:22it's six weeks since the pit bull puppies were rescued and finally officer robin has some good
24:29news about them we've been trying really really hard lots of people have been working on it to try
24:34and get homes for the puppies and luckily one's going to their new home which is just excellent
24:42so right now we are going to meet a lady who is fostering one of the new puppies for their new home
24:49the new owner just has to get some of the fencing and things like that in place so she's going to
24:53foster them and just keep them for two or three weeks until that's all in place so she's really excited
25:01this puppy has not been named yet i think robin would be a perfect name
25:05oh look at you oh you're such a lucky girl well we've got the new owner so let's take her up and see
25:24you can tell that she's just like people she's like trust people that's awesome hi shelby
25:30and she's a snuggler oh big time my heart as a restricted breed the pit bull can only be kept in
25:55an area with a kennel and secure fencing come on in let me show you our fenced-in area
26:02look oh wow this is nice this is nice you got a nice little area to run around you've never had so
26:09much space i know look at that we also have shade and shelter this is perfect this is perfect nice
26:15area for the dog to run around toys in the yard this is perfect there's no point of exit for the for
26:20the dogs to get loose this is this is great fencing nice high fencing i don't know if you'll get that
26:26big but just in case hey she might be a jumper right yeah you never know so i found out the dog was up for
26:34fostering about two weeks ago and my thought process was like okay i have to do something have to be able
26:41to like foster a dog even if i can't adopt one i need to be able to help in some sort of way
26:47so we already have two dogs they're both rescues and i truthfully i think she's going to fit in
26:52perfectly fine they love other dogs so she does not have a name as of yet but she is a beautiful
26:59color so hopefully i don't know maybe she's like she looks like a bit of a hazel
27:02she's like am i really the puppy may not have been named after officer robin just yet
27:17but to see a puppy home has been a boost we just assist the wardens with some of the warrants that
27:22they do with them we've come across some pretty bad situations so it's so heartening to see a good
27:28ending to this to see healthy puppies happy puppies it kind of makes all the other stuff
27:34you do worth it you know and all the the other heartbreak you see so i'm blown away by how amazing
27:40this setup is let's go oh good girl we develop as police officers a thick skin as i'm sure the wardens
27:47do with what they deal with because we have to you know protect ourselves so when we do get a chance to
27:53have a happy ending and to you know a home for puppies or or be able to help a family that you
27:58got to really you know soak that in i just i love it this is great oh it's a girl nice to meet you girl
28:11next time the police target dangerous driving just as the bike went past it looked like it had
28:17something in in his hand have you got your driving license with you i'm just going to check that out
28:20while here and raw recruits tackle a tough training regime
28:47you
