00:00Welcome to Bermuda, a small island paradise in the middle of the Atlantic.
00:07Seeing the turquoise waters, it does lift my mood.
00:10Go along the coast, okay? See you up there.
00:14A dedicated police service...
00:17Somebody's going to need to open this door up really quickly.
00:20...is keeping this British Overseas Territory safe.
00:25I think he wears the uniform very well.
00:27Do you want the $20 now?
00:29Officers, including Brits, doing their duty.
00:32It's tough. And it's really humid today.
00:37The reality is that there are challenges.
00:40Crime busting in a place where anything can happen.
00:44I didn't really expect the cows to run out the gate. Uh-oh.
00:49Going to great lengths to catch criminals.
00:54She's gone, gone. She's gone.
00:56Cannot make this up.
00:59With summer tourists arriving in droves.
01:02Woo-hoo!
01:03This is peak season for the police.
01:06Listen, mate.
01:07Calm down.
01:08I love policing. It's in my DNA.
01:12On patrol today, officers Brydon and Shandora are on the trail of motorbike thieves.
01:22My sergeant was behind a motorcycle that he's identified as being stolen.
01:27Officer Gregory White tracks down a suspect who failed to appear in court.
01:31All right. That's good. Not too tight.
01:34Are you burning up as well?
01:35And the police, keeping Bermuda's road safe...
01:37Hey, how are you doing?
01:38...are feeling the heat.
01:39You have your driver's license on you?
01:40I should have melted about £10 off since the time we've been here.
01:43The humidity is high. It's not just the heat you have to deal with, it's the sweat as well.
01:49Today, officers Brydon Pedro and Shandora Burrows are heading out on patrol, hoping to catch motorbike thieves.
01:58With around five motorbikes stolen every day, it's a big problem in Bermuda.
02:03Tackling motorcycle theft is a very important thing for police, just to help reduce continued criminality in the island and to target those who want to use them as a method of escape or method of targeting others.
02:20My partner Shandora I've worked with actually since training school.
02:24We were in the same training course and came out in the same year.
02:28We've definitely had our good times and our more stressful times.
02:32We've always sort of had a friendly camaraderie with each other.
02:37We generally share very similar opinions.
02:42A few minutes into the afternoon shift, they respond to an urgent alert call from their sergeant, who's chasing a suspected stolen motorbike.
02:50Motorcycle theft in Bermuda is actually quite prevalent and it's very important to sort of keep on that task and get those bikes recovered.
03:08Sometimes it can be a bit challenging.
03:14Get it from Peter.
03:15Get it from Peter.
03:19CG-582 turned up here.
03:21And like that random stood.
03:22My sergeant just was behind a motorcycle that he's identified as being stolen, so we're just looking around for it now.
03:33We're currently in the Rambling Lane area, which is sort of a frequented area, this little slip, to get away from police because it's an error pathway.
03:42Bikes can get through, cars can't.
03:45So generally whenever we see a stolen bike, which is what we did, in about 30 seconds cycle turned up here through Rambling Lane and got away from us because our cars can't go through the barriers.
03:56So we were just hoping that maybe he took the bike off somewhere and we can see him again.
04:05They're often used to commit further crimes.
04:08They'll take the plates off, change the plates to hide their identity and to make an easier escape.
04:13It's much easier to cut through someone's yard and hedge on a motorcycle than it is in a car.
04:18The bikes are pretty much stolen every day.
04:20These guys learn the skills and then end up using the cycles to do other things or simply get around.
04:28Sometimes it's just a 15 year old who wants to have a little fun, which can be very dangerous.
04:32It's obviously frustrating for the people who the bikes belong to.
04:35But you know that if these guys are out there doing it every day, karma comes around and one day you'll get them.
04:42With no sign of the stolen bike here, for officers Brydon and Shindora, the search continues.
04:48Afternoon.
05:02Officer Gregory White was born on the island and has been with the police service for 20 years.
05:09As a police officer, I would say that I like to be out on patrols.
05:13I just enjoy the job.
05:14It's an adventure every day when I come to work.
05:16Growing up, my dad was a police officer and I'd hear his stories and it just attracted me.
05:25It's a rewarding career.
05:27I've had some people come up to me that I dealt with as juveniles years later and be like, you know, thank you for putting me back on the straight path.
05:36It's good to have that sort of feeling.
05:38Makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
05:42Officer Gregory is on patrol in the capital, Hamilton.
05:47Yeah, requesting 36 check. So right now there's a gentleman in a red shirt and, um, and gray sweatspants.
05:55So the gentleman right here is sitting on the bucket.
05:58He might have outstanding warrants, court warrants.
06:02So I'm going to stop and engage him.
06:04He is a bit of a homeless man.
06:05He sleeps in a, in a car, in other local car parks.
06:08And, and I was aware of that he had missed a court date.
06:12Afternoon, mate.
06:13How are you?
06:14Good, good.
06:15Um, it might be outstanding warrants for you, all right?
06:18So we're just getting them checked at the station.
06:20And if there is, then you're going to have to come with me.
06:27Take a seat.
06:29No, just hold on.
06:31Just hold on.
06:33Just give me a minute, all right?
06:39No?
06:40OK, well, we're getting it checked, so we'll see.
06:42We'll see.
06:47All right.
06:49So you're going to be arrested?
06:53I'm explaining it to you.
06:54So I'm arresting you on the warrant for failing to appear in court for trespassing.
07:01OK.
07:03There is times when it does pull on your heartstrings to have to, you know, arrest somebody.
07:09Once you've checked and if there's a warrant out for somebody, then your hands are kind of bound that you have to execute that warrant.
07:18I'll put it over there.
07:19I've got all my stuff right here, man.
07:22Please.
07:23All right.
07:24So we're letting him get rid of his stuff that he doesn't want to take with him into the station.
07:36He lives rough, so this is all of his stuff here.
07:39Um, and then he's going to be arrested for, uh, the warrant failing to appear in court for trespassing on private property.
07:47Your role as, uh, is to get them before the magistrates in court so that matters can be dealt with and justice can be served.
07:58I still have a job to do, and I had to arrest him and take him into custody.
08:02No, you can't.
08:03Nope.
08:04You've been arrested now, so I can't allow you to do that.
08:09I don't know why I'm being arrested.
08:11I've explained to you, you failed to appear in court for trespassing.
08:15I was in hospital.
08:17OK, so if you can...
08:18I can prove.
08:19OK, well, if you can prove that, then...
08:22All right.
08:23Anything on you I need to know about, I'm going to give you a quick search, OK?
08:26Stand still. Stand still.
08:31All right.
08:32That's good?
08:33Not too tight?
08:34Yeah, good.
08:35You're good? OK.
08:36Let's go back this way.
08:39Right. OK, well, we'll bring the food with us.
08:42The officer here will put it in the car with us, OK?
08:47I do have some sympathy for him, um, but it's...
08:52I've got a job that I swore to do, and I've got to be able to execute that,
08:57and I can't let sympathy dictate how I perform my duties.
09:02You're not about to say anything, we should do so.
09:04Whatever you say, maybe taking down the writing and giving evidence.
09:06Do you understand?
09:08Nothing to say?
09:10OK.
09:11He is well known to police for various offenses,
09:15so when you see him, you still have to have your grounds
09:18in order to check him, um, for stopping and searching
09:21and that sort of stuff.
09:23Uh, but for...
09:25If you know that there's outstanding matters for it,
09:26then it's worth the check.
09:28And today, it proved that it was worth the check.
09:30Find somewhere to sit off after you.
09:42Officers Brydon and Shindora are in the far east of Bermuda.
09:46Peaceful.
09:47Grabbing a quick lunch break
09:49when the temperature's hitting 35 degrees.
09:51Take a moment to have a darn time doing my work.
09:55I like to come and sit off and just sit by the water,
09:58looking at the view.
09:59There's many views like this in Bermuda,
10:00so it's really, it's really great.
10:03Bermuda has its own natural beauty.
10:05We don't get a lot of lunch breaks,
10:06so when we do have a moment,
10:07it really is nice to come and sit down
10:09and appreciate the view.
10:14The two officers have received a report
10:17that some stolen bikes have been spotted
10:20at a municipal dump on the outskirts of Hamilton.
10:24So we're heading down to Perimeter Lane,
10:26which is just off the Glebe Road,
10:29in search for some stolen cycles.
10:33One of our off-duty police officers stated that
10:37likely those cycles are being placed down there
10:40or possibly stripped.
10:42Motorbike thefts are so prevalent
10:44due to the fact that a lot of parts coming in
10:48are sometimes hard to resource
10:49and people can't either afford them
10:51or get them on island.
10:53Cycle theft in Bermuda is sort of an ongoing crime,
10:57and in order to reduce continued offences
11:00like crimes against people or antisocial behaviour
11:04from happening,
11:06we try and remove the cycles that have been stolen
11:10and return the property back to the rightful owner,
11:12as well as help reduce the antisocial behaviour
11:17that goes on when they use the bikes
11:20to commit further offences.
11:22Huh.
11:23There's a bike there.
11:25There's no bike?
11:26Yeah, right in the bush.
11:28Looked like a GT.
11:31There's some popular bikes right there.
11:33Ah.
11:34Stolen motorcycles are typically either hidden or dumped.
11:38They don't want to be associated with the cycle,
11:39so they won't leave them on their properties.
11:42You don't want something that can go straight back to you.
11:46So they're usually stashed away.
11:48Officer Mark Lewis has joined them.
11:51Hopefully the bikes are rideable.
11:52To help with recovering any stolen bikes.
11:55The bike in the trees.
11:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:57So we're currently at a Marsh Folly dump.
12:01And about 200 metres as we drove in,
12:05we saw some cycles in the tree line.
12:07And we're hoping to be able to recover the cycles.
12:10The police gain access to the giant dump.
12:15All of our plant foliage and everything that is cut comes here.
12:18And search for the bike that Officer Brydon spotted from the road.
12:28That looks brand new.
12:30This is business, Brydon.
12:31Yeah, this is new now.
12:33This is the one that we saw driving past from the road.
12:34You're going to report on one?
12:35Right.
12:36Yeah, a brand new cycle that someone's put a lot of money and love into,
12:40and it's now here in the trees.
12:43We need to verify that all of the numbers associated with cycle,
12:48engine number and chassis number,
12:51actually match back that it is a confirmed stolen bike.
12:54But generally when we see a bike with no plate on it,
12:57it would mean that it is stolen.
13:04It is very worn.
13:07One, zero.
13:08One, zero.
13:10Eight, one.
13:11Two, one, six.
13:13When they pop the lock, it pops the ignition over.
13:16So they could have popped the lock and rolled it here.
13:22I definitely think that every single person
13:24who's more of a law-abiding citizen who has their cycle removed
13:28definitely are getting frustrated.
13:30For the police, it's an ongoing effort
13:33to just locate them and try and identify who's stealing these cycles
13:36and returning them back to their owners.
13:39We'll have to wheel it out somehow.
13:42You got it?
13:43It's definitely satisfying when you can recover someone's property,
13:47recover someone's stolen cycle,
13:49either get it back to them,
13:50or know that it's not going to be used to cause anyone further harm.
13:53It's not just the thick undergrowth that makes the recovery tricky.
13:58The summer heat makes this hard work.
14:03Especially on a hot day like this, you can't not sweat.
14:09But fortunately enough, there's a little bit of a path this time.
14:12There definitely could be more here.
14:21It's quite a large property.
14:23Lots of hiding spots in these trees.
14:26The next step would be to put the bike on our transport vehicle.
14:30The bike, registered as stolen, will be stored at the police impound,
14:34ready for the rightful owner to collect.
14:36I definitely enjoy recovering cycles in the wintertime,
14:41but it's always an enjoyment being able to get someone's property back to them.
15:00It's a sultry Wednesday afternoon in Hamilton.
15:03Sergeant Helen McHugh and Officer Peter Paul Taylor are taking a well-earned break from the heat.
15:10It's very hot this time of day, so we're just going to go and get a quick iced coffee.
15:14Oh my God, it's so cool in here.
15:17Hello. Afternoon. How are you doing?
15:21Can I get an iced coffee, please?
15:23Are you getting a protein shake?
15:25Lovely. Thank you very much.
15:27It's not a bad part of the day.
15:28It's a nice little break in between, just to come out.
15:31And you get to meet the community as well, so, yeah, it's good.
15:36Try not to look at these.
15:40Bermuda is a long way from where Officer Helen began her police career,
15:45the somewhat cooler North Wales.
15:48I used to hate the British weather.
15:50I would have about five layers on when I was patrolling.
15:52I'd have the heating on, my colleague would be taking the mick out of me.
15:55And here it's, I complain about the heat all the time, but...
15:59But I love it.
16:00Unfortunate thing is there's only one cup holder.
16:03Our plan today is we're going to do a traffic initiative in the Harbour Road area.
16:08It's sometimes an area that traffic users will use to avoid the main roads,
16:12and do some traffic stops, just general traffic stops,
16:15make sure that people have their driving licences on them,
16:18that the bike or the car that they're in is theirs,
16:20or they have permission to use it.
16:22Oh, my word, I'm melting.
16:23I'm melting.
16:40In Hamilton Police Station, Officer Gregory White is with a man
16:44he's arrested on a warrant for trespassing.
16:47So now the custody sergeant is going to book him in and give him his rights,
16:53and make sure he understands what the process is and why he's being booked in.
16:57He has various offences that he's known for by us.
17:02I wouldn't be surprised if I come into contact with him again for another warrant or some sort of offence.
17:09Would you like to inform someone that you're here at the station?
17:12I don't think anybody.
17:15Is that a yes or no?
17:17We let go.
17:19Unfortunately, we do have people that are kind of just stuck in the system,
17:22and, you know, they'll get caught, and they'll get put into prison,
17:26and then come back out, and it's just a matter of time before so-and-so's at it again.
17:32Come here, I got to search you again.
17:35I got to search you. I got to take all this stuff off.
17:39All right.
17:40Can you take that off? All right.
17:42You got to take all those off.
17:46Put it right in the tray there.
17:49Empty out your pockets.
17:54Can the drawstring come out of those pants?
17:56No.
18:04All right. Give me another pat down.
18:05It's important to search people when they're in custody because they can have things in there that would harm themselves or harm an officer when they go in to attend to them.
18:23Bermuda is one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
18:30On the flip side of things, you know, Bermuda isn't without its challenges as far as, you know, the underprivileged.
18:35So you do have the people that are struggling to find housing and sleeping on the side of the streets.
18:44They have a right to food and water, so right now I'm just getting him a couple of cups of water that he's asked for.
18:49It's hot out there, so.
18:50Here you go.
19:00I guess you can say there was a bit of sense of relief when you hand that person over.
19:04You've done your job and you've done it satisfactorily.
19:07They're going to be safe and that your colleagues are safe if you've done your job correctly.
19:11You do have times where you feel sorry for them, you know, seeing all his stuff there and seeing how he's living rough.
19:18But unfortunately, it's, you know, you can only do so much to help him out and he's got to try and do what he can to help himself as well.
19:27There is agencies like Salvation Army that are willing to help out these guys.
19:31As the saying goes, you can only lead a horse to water. You can't make a drink.
19:34On a steaming hot day, even by Bermuda's standards, officers Helen and Peter Paul are on their way to set up a traffic initiative with the aim of reducing the island's high accident rate.
19:57The majority are good drivers, but there is some bad habits that leak in and unfortunately there is, there is quite a few collisions on the island and this is why we are engaging motorists on a daily basis.
20:12Yes, we have 13 fatals last year, which is, one is way too much, but 13 is just way, way too much.
20:18For a small island.
20:19Yeah.
20:20That's a lot.
20:22So that's what we're going to do now.
20:23As long as we don't die of heat exhaustion.
20:27How are you doing today? Do you have your driver's license on you I can look at?
20:34Yeah, just for your information, myself and ARV3 are doing traffic initiatives on Harbour Road, Red Hole area.
20:41Melting.
20:43Have a good one.
20:47In this vest, in summertime, it is hot.
20:50Just have to do my best to be professional and bear with the heat.
20:53Oh, oh my lord.
20:55Despite the heat.
20:57Thank you so much.
20:58The officers and the drivers remain friendly.
21:02All right, it's all in order. Have a good one, all right?
21:04Go, go, all ready.
21:06Local Bermudians are very traditional.
21:07If you don't say good morning or good afternoon to someone, you can hurt their feelings.
21:11So you have to adapt to the traditions.
21:13Do you have your driver's license on you?
21:16It's your expiry date.
21:18His vehicle's in order, but his license expired in January.
21:22So it's going to be ticketed for driving without a driver's license.
21:25Unfortunately, I have ticketed many people without a driver's license.
21:31They just forget or just can't be bothered to get a license renewed.
21:34You all right? How are you doing?
21:36We're just doing some vehicle checks to make sure people have their driver's licenses on them
21:40and that the vehicle's all correct.
21:42Yep.
21:43Can I just see the expiry on that?
21:45And you just passed your test?
21:47Yeah, because it's a youth license.
21:49You look slightly old. I thought you were coming up 18, to be honest.
21:52Oh, no.
21:54Okay, cool. Just keep your speed down a little bit, okay?
21:57Don't want to be coming off especially in your shorts and bare skin
21:59because you're going to end up with a lot of road rash.
22:00Yeah.
22:01So keep your speed down.
22:04Drive safe.
22:06The setup on the roads, it's showing a police presence.
22:08It's showing we're out there.
22:10Social media groups that will tell people that we're out there.
22:14That in itself is a good deterrent because it gets people to slow down.
22:18People need to be licensed on the road.
22:19They need to be insured and that's as simple as.
22:22Hey, how are you doing? You all right?
22:27Thank you so much.
22:29Travel safe.
22:32How are you doing? Can you turn your vehicle off for me?
22:33Yes.
22:34You have your driver's license on you?
22:36So I see your sticker says February 2024.
22:39Now expiry for...
22:43He says his...
22:45It's an old one.
22:46Yeah.
22:47So I'm just going to check.
22:4810-4, thank you.
22:50All right.
22:51So yeah, I confirmed this all in eight.
22:53But get it changed as soon as possible, all right?
22:56You're free to go.
22:57All right?
22:58I've been a police officer for about two and a half years.
23:00If I can help at least one person a day, that should be on.
23:03Whether it be giving someone advice or even stopping someone issuing them a ticket.
23:08It's not just for me of giving them a ticket.
23:10It's, you've did this wrong, so let's prevent getting more tickets.
23:14Are you burning up as well?
23:15Yeah.
23:16I am melting.
23:17Yeah.
23:18I should have melted about 10 pounds off since the time we've been here.
23:23But this is the kind of worst time of the year.
23:25The humidity is high.
23:27It's up to like 80, between the 80s and 90s.
23:30So it's not just the heat you have to deal with.
23:32It's the sweat as well.
23:34So usually like this time of day, it's in the high heat.
23:38So we will only usually get out of here for about an hour at tops.
23:42And then we'll need to go in for a little bit of a water break and rehydrate.
23:45Get cool again and then go back out.
23:47And especially with all this on, it's a lot.
23:50You can feel your body temperature getting high.
23:53Hot, hot, hot.
23:54Go back to the office, have a bit of a break,
23:57and then go for a patrol.
24:00Half three now, so.
24:01It's a job well done for officers Helen and Peter Paul,
24:05with no major incidents.
24:07To be honest, if I have no calls for service,
24:10then that means everything is going good.
24:12And they're still being out patrolling.
24:15But no one calls 911 for help, then it's been a good day.
24:19Oh, God.
24:21So we're currently at the police impound,
24:24where we store all of our impounded cycles that have been stolen.
24:28With about five being stolen a day, about three to five being recovered a day.
24:35This is a cycle that we recovered from Marsh Folly,
24:37and the owners have already received payout from the insurance company.
24:40So it's going to stay here with the hundreds of other bikes that rest here.
24:45The police service has a dedicated bike impound manager, Officer Mark Lewis,
24:50and he's kept very busy.
24:51We practically get stolen bikes in here daily.
24:55Just taking a picture because I'm old
24:56I'm old and my nice name,
24:58I'm old and my back.
25:00I'm old and I'm old.
25:01I'm old and I'm old and I am old.
25:02I'm old and I'm old.
25:03But I'm old and I'm old.
25:04I'm old and I'm old.
25:05I'm old and I'm old and I'm old and I'm old.
25:07And I'm old.
25:08We're old.
25:09And I'm old.
25:10So, I'm old.
25:11Now, this is a cycle that we recovered from Marsh Folly.
25:12And, uh,
25:13the owners have already received payout from the insurance company.
25:15So it's going to stay here,
25:17with the hundreds of other bikes that rest here.
25:19daily. Just taking a picture because I'm old and my eyesight's gone. And then I'll run it through
25:28our transport control department's database, because we have access to that, to verify that
25:34this frame and engine number match the plates. The impound houses more than 200 bikes.
25:42Stolen bikes are used in various other crimes, not just joyriding. You know, this is people's
25:48property. And I know a lot of people, you know, spend good money, hard-earned money, to get their
25:53bikes. So it's kind of that, you know, I want to help these people get their vehicles back.
26:01Yeah, it's in good condition since it's been here for a year.
26:04Today, Officer Mark is reuniting one owner with his bike, which was stolen more than a year ago.
26:12All right, well, your bike is in my little impound here. It's in fairly good condition.
26:17Um, it's not stripped.
26:20That's exciting.
26:21Uh, I'm sure you're happy to get your property back.
26:25Back on the road.
26:26Yep. There she is.
26:29Yeah.
26:30She does have some, um, damage. They pop the seat for any valuables. This is normally broken off.
26:37So this will probably just need to be bent back into shape.
26:41Still my U-lock.
26:42Yeah.
26:43Not a very good place for it. Should have been on the bike.
26:45My charger. That's cool. That's exciting.
26:48She has to be sitting, so she's a little...
26:50Seized up. That's all right.
26:51A little seized up.
26:52That's okay.
26:53Probably had a little salt water spray on her.
26:55Yeah.
26:59Sharks are still moving.
27:01So you're going to need a minimum of ignition replaced.
27:04That's okay. Much cheaper than a new bike.
27:07Both me and my brother, we've always lived on the water in the summer and stuff.
27:10And, uh, sleeping on the boat. We came back in at 6.30, 7 o'clock to go to work and the bike was gone.
27:18And so I called my brother. I was like, hey, where'd you park the bike?
27:22Called the police, dealt with that. And, uh, been without a bike for a year.
27:26Now I ain't got it back.
27:27It was found within a mile or two of, um, where it was stolen. Um, just on the roadside.
27:34Guys are stuck in town. I need a ride home. They'll steal a bike and they'll just run the bike so it runs out of gas.
27:42Because they're not going to take a stolen bike into a gas station where they can be identified.
27:47Well, I'm happy you're happy.
27:48Yes.
27:49Glad you got it back.
27:49Yeah, man. This is like Christmas.
27:54Cycle thefts could be a downhill battle, trying to chase a pebble down a mountain.
27:59It's definitely an ongoing problem that we're trying to tackle.
28:03I mean, it increases your insurance premiums for even people who aren't involved.
28:06We're hoping to help reassure Bermuda that we can make it a safer place.
28:12Next time, a serious road traffic collision.
28:15He's in a lot of pain. Um, I think he has a broken arm and maybe some crack ribs.
28:19And a drug busting first at the airport.
28:21You're under arrest on suspicion of imputation of a controlled drug.
28:45That's not right.
28:50It's horrible.
28:53Yeah?
28:54Yeah.
28:57Yeah?
28:59Yeah.
29:01Yeah, yeah.
29:02Yeah.
29:03Right.
29:05Yeah?
29:06Yeah.
29:07Yeah.
29:09Yeah.
29:10Yeah.
29:11Yeah.
29:11Yeah.
29:11Yeah.
29:13Yeah.
