00:00Welcome to Bermuda,
00:03a small island paradise in the middle of the Atlantic.
00:07Seeing the turquoise waters, it does lift my mood.
00:10We'll go along the coast, OK? See you up there.
00:13A dedicated police service...
00:17Somebody's gonna need to open this door up really quickly.
00:19..is keeping this British Overseas Territory safe.
00:25I think he wears the uniform very well.
00:27Do you want the $20 now?
00:28Officers, including Brits, doing their duty.
00:32It's tough, and it's really humid today.
00:36The reality is there are challenges.
00:39Crime-busting in a place where anything can happen.
00:43I didn't really expect the cows to run out the gate.
00:46Uh-oh.
00:49Going to great lengths to catch criminals.
00:53Oh, she's gone, gone. She's gone.
00:56Cannot make this up.
00:58With summer tourists arriving in droves...
01:01Whoo!
01:02..whoo!
01:03..this is peak season for the police.
01:05Listen, baby!
01:07Calm down.
01:08I love policing.
01:10It's in my DNA.
01:11In Bermuda today, officers race to deal with an urgent threat.
01:22We're still trying to get some more information as to what the report is.
01:25Weapons get involved.
01:26Kitchen knives, machetes.
01:28They go to great depths in diving rescue practice.
01:32Training today is going to be pretty intense.
01:38And they get hot under the collar when stuck behind bars.
01:42We are magnetically locked inside this gate.
01:45Oh, I cannot make this up.
01:57Officers Moya and Justin are starting a 12-hour shift with a patrol in the east of the island.
02:04Moya?
02:04Yeah?
02:05It's too hot.
02:06It is too hot!
02:07It is too hot!
02:08Hey, can you imagine just wearing this, um, vest in this heat all day long without the A.C.?
02:14No.
02:15That would be a struggle.
02:16It's not just hot, it's humid and hot.
02:19Moya is Jamaican.
02:21She's been policing here for three years.
02:24The reason why I wanted to be a cop, apart from me, just wanted to be, um, a sniper.
02:33I've always wanted to be a sniper, but I can't shoot a gun yet.
02:36I'm alone.
02:38I just always wanted to be a person who makes a difference in the community.
02:44With around 20,000 registered motorbikes and scooters on such a small island,
02:49combating bike theft is a major task for the police.
02:52We're gonna have a look.
02:55In a known spot where Stirling's cycles get dumped, it'll be in the bush right up ahead of us.
03:02In the past, we'll find Stirling's cycles here.
03:05And the persons who dropped the bikes off, they know that police come in this area and I'll check.
03:10So they're probably more mindful and probably changed that spot.
03:13But it never hurts to still check.
03:17Nothing new has changed.
03:18But in making his own escape from the bushes, Officer Justin has found himself caught...
03:24Oh, shoot my hat.
03:25...on a sharp branch.
03:27Yeah, the hat caused him to hit his head. Watch out. Jesus.
03:32All right.
03:33Oh, and it's bleeding.
03:35Yeah.
03:35Jeez.
03:36It's bad. It don't hurt.
03:38It doesn't?
03:39I don't even feel it.
03:40I've been assaulted while working due to just making arrests and dealing with members of the public.
03:47You know, in regards to hitting my head on a branch pretty much the first time.
03:51I thought my hat took most of the hit, but I guess not.
03:55Let's go.
03:56Yeah.
03:57All right.
03:58Please don't get injured for the rest of the day.
03:59If everyone not.
04:00No more injuries.
04:01I guess this is the job you signed up for, right?
04:03Yeah.
04:03Even if it's minor.
04:06Yeah.
04:07Safely in the car, officers Moya and Justin get a call to attend threats being made between neighbours.
04:15You said there's a threatening report.
04:21Over 15 minutes away, the high-risk call requires a high-speed response.
04:26We're still trying to get some more information and some more clarity as to what the report is.
04:32So, threats to harm?
04:33Yeah, so it could be threats to harm, threats to cause damage, kill.
04:39Disputes can get really bad.
04:41They can get to the point where people are assaulted.
04:45Weapons get involved.
04:46Kitchen knives, machetes, vats, and all kind of different things.
04:50Yeah, I could do to Oscar.
04:52Confirm the suspects doing scene.
04:5410-4.
04:56The tensions are so high and they resort to violence.
05:00Are there any weapons involved at this time?
05:03In that moment, you have to assume the worst.
05:15Working hard to ensure that Bermuda's neighbourhoods remain safe are almost 400
05:20officers that make up the police service.
05:22Top cop is Commissioner Darren Simons.
05:25So, this is where I stay.
05:27This is where I live.
05:27I've been living here for probably about 25 years.
05:33His family has been on the island for generations.
05:37I'd like to show you the view.
05:39That's just incredibly relaxing.
05:44On the weekend when you're having a barbecue or something like that, kicking back your feet,
05:48enjoying a beverage.
05:50I'm really grateful to have, you know, raised my kids in this area, in this neighbourhood.
05:55This is home.
05:58I think about what I do in the context of my neighbourhood, so I deliver policing services
06:03for a community that is very near and dear to my heart.
06:18The Bermuda is also dear to Officer Eddie Smith, who is enjoying the pleasures of an idyllic
06:24lunch break with his colleague, Jen.
06:26It's a little warm, but, I mean, we're under the shade.
06:31You're not taking on the blistering heat.
06:33Yeah, I definitely feel lucky, you know, blessed to live in an island like this, you know.
06:38How do you put a value to this?
06:41This is stunning.
06:43Their job on patrol today is to show a reassuring police presence for those out in the sun.
06:49It's a Saturday weekend, so I'm just going to pay heightened attention to the area beaches,
06:55height of summer, so got a lot of tourists in town.
06:59Do our best to stay safe and keep cool.
07:05Enjoying the Bermudan great outdoors is one of the finest parts of the job for Officer Eddie.
07:11I need to be outdoors. I need to enjoy the ocean, the breeze, the trees, the people.
07:16It's beautiful. That's what Bermuda is. The ocean is always exceptional. I can listen to it. I love it.
07:24They've arrived at Cooper's Island Nature Reserve, an area that contains some of the country's best beaches.
07:33Should we do a foot patrol all the way in?
07:35Yeah, we can do that.
07:36Oh, you're not feeling it?
07:37No, no.
07:37I'm all back. We can do that.
07:39It's a closed-off area. You cannot take motor vehicles there.
07:42It's a nature reserve, and it's important to protect what's down here.
07:45You know, you have to be concerned about the fumes if the car breaks down and the oil leaks all over the place.
07:50And we should all respect that.
07:52Access for beachgoers should only be through a pedestrian entrance.
07:57So it's a bit of a walk.
07:58It's warm, but it's gorgeous, and it's just a great spot to be able to patrol.
08:04Immediately, they find an illegally parked car right next to one of the main beaches.
08:10It's shocking to find a vehicle in there.
08:12Officer Eddie calls in to identify the owner.
08:15With no driver details available, officers Eddie and Jen must trudge through the sand
08:32in search of the car's owner in 35-degree heat.
08:36Good afternoon, ladies. How is everyone?
08:40Good, good. You wouldn't happen to know who's operating this car, do you?
08:43No, I don't.
08:43No?
08:44I have a strong feeling it's going by the time we come back.
08:47We can somehow miss it.
08:49They might be over on the other beach.
08:51There's another little path over to us there.
08:54Yeah, and they walk right past us, not them.
08:56Yeah.
08:57Oh, I want to get in that water so bad.
09:01I won't tell.
09:02You're lazy enough to drive your car.
09:04I don't know.
09:05Fear the heat.
09:07Brutal direct sun.
09:09Hey, how you doing?
09:09Afternoon.
09:10Another three feet and that'd be perfect.
09:14How do you all come out to us during the day without shades on?
09:17Your eyes just adjust.
09:19I don't want this beauty to be filtered.
09:23I mean, they've got helmets.
09:25I'm thinking, uh, so I'm going to say no.
09:27Hello.
09:28Hello, myself.
09:29Shorts would be nice.
09:31Well, you have to wear Bermuda shorts.
09:33So you have the shorts and the socks.
09:35Good afternoon, sir.
09:36Good afternoon.
09:36How you doing, Jay?
09:37Good afternoon.
09:38Tell me, you wouldn't know that Kia Sully is out there, would you?
09:40No.
09:41No?
09:41No.
09:41All right.
09:43Yeah, unfortunately, nobody's really forthcoming with information.
09:47Nobody really knows who the vehicle belongs to.
09:50So we do have some options.
09:52We could call a tow truck or just leave a ticket on the vehicle.
09:57Offended by the offense, officer Eddie is keen to tow, not ticket.
10:01We had the concern of whether or not we were going to just ticket the person.
10:06And that's fine.
10:07But it didn't move the vehicle.
10:09That was the most important thing to me.
10:10The car needed to get out of there.
10:12But he checks with his boss to ask which would be appropriate.
10:16Boss, it's Eddie calling.
10:18We're down at Cooper's Island and there's a car in here.
10:21Trying to figure out the next course of action to deal with this.
10:24Can you tell me to get it?
10:26Yeah, that's going to require me walking back to the car and coming back.
10:29But ticketing it doesn't...
10:31I mean, yeah, we can't ticket it.
10:33I would have towed it, but it just means going back to the car.
10:37Their inspector's decision to ticket means they must make the hot walk back up the hill
10:43to retrieve their ticket book from the car.
10:47Yeah, we're just little chamois cloth things and pop it in there.
10:50Yeah, we do.
10:58Bleeding.
11:01I don't think I'm walking back here.
11:03Nine hours into his shift, the heat's finally gotten to Officer Eddie.
11:07So he's taking the cooler option to drive back to the illegally parked car.
11:12Put the booty on it. Look at that.
11:14You have to learn to use your brain.
11:17Put the booty on it.
11:19Because I'm not walking back down there.
11:22Luckily, there's an important operational reason why Officer Eddie needs his car.
11:27Once I have to do the execution of my duty, which could have gone in any direction,
11:31it might have resulted in an arrest.
11:33I still need my vehicle, so that was part of the reason I actually drove in
11:37to execute that part of the duty.
11:39Because you just don't know where it's going to go.
11:41So you should be prepared.
11:43But Officer Eddie's plan comes with a catch.
11:46I noticed when I was closing the gate, as it closed completely,
11:51that there was some type of sealing mechanism.
11:54I just didn't put it together in that moment.
11:58Unbeknownst to the officers, the gate has an automatic locking mechanism
12:02that slammed shut behind them.
12:06Why did I close it all a bit?
12:07It doesn't even make sense.
12:08The police service, along with the Coast Guard,
12:23help to make sure those on the water are safe.
12:26And that includes policing above and below the water.
12:37The scuba team could be called to drug trafficking incidents and even murder.
12:42Today, the team is doing vital monthly training.
12:49Training today is going to be pretty intense.
12:52We're going to do our 500-meter swim.
12:55I know everyone is dreading it, but you're definitely not getting out of it.
12:58It's only going to take, what, 16 to 20 minutes to do that.
13:00Once we get back after that, you guys can dip off and do your refresher stuff.
13:04That'll get you your dive for the morning.
13:0719-year-old Gabby is a potential new reservist.
13:12I'm really excited mostly about going for the dive.
13:14I haven't been diving in over a year, so just to be able to dive with people who are experienced,
13:20I kind of feel like I'm being mentored in the best way possible.
13:24Brit officer Hugo Benzinga has worked for the Bermudan police for two years.
13:30I'm 53, and I've got to be as good as the 25-year-olds.
13:33Over three decades, Gabby Sr., he's proving he's still got what it takes for a 500-meter swim.
13:41It's hard. I will never admit that to the people in my team.
13:49But it's good fun, and once a month, I'm out there and giving it my best.
13:59Next, the real task in hand, to gain experience in underwater recovery diving at depths of 20 meters.
14:06You're recovering an unresponsive diver from the bottom,
14:10bringing them up to the surface, so that is going to be your mission.
14:16Which is pretty heavy.
14:17The weighted dummy officer Hugo has saved many times before.
14:22Let's see. It's just a very life-like version.
14:26She's about 170 pounds normally.
14:30When she's wet, she's a bit more. So, yeah.
14:32That's what we use, part of our equipment.
14:35As much as the water in Bermuda is beautiful and is often crystal clear,
14:43we don't necessarily dive those places to find things.
14:45We have to dive the places that aren't as beautiful.
14:50The most serious crime I've had to deal with on water is murder.
14:54The water can be a way for some people to try and get rid of the body.
15:01That's why we have that capacity and capability to search, whether it's for a weapon or a knife,
15:07hand or a body.
15:08Trainee reserve Gabby is tasked with the tough job of locating the body for the more experienced divers to recover.
15:23She's wearing a blackout mask to replicate the zero visibility of a murky night search
15:28that police divers get thrown into.
15:30It really put me out of my comfort zone because when you first go in, I get a little overwhelmed.
15:40Probably the most challenging part would be putting on the blackout mask just because
15:47you feel more at ease when you can see what's around you instead of depending on your sense of touch.
15:53With no visibility, trainee Gabby has managed to deploy the simple device called a peanut
16:01to guide those on the surface to where the body is, a task in real life that Hugo has known.
16:08Finding a body, covering a body in itself can be traumatic, absolutely.
16:14It does and absolutely can hit you sideways when you're not expecting it.
16:18We're talking about somebody's life and trying to give them closure, so
16:21it's important to do in a very professional and respectful way.
16:29Rookie Gabby has completed the training and risen to the task.
16:34So Gabby, we just saw her first time today.
16:36In that first few 30 seconds, first minute, I just noticed a little bit of just trepidation about her.
16:42Yep, everything was good.
16:44I didn't enjoy today. I was getting very nervous, but I would say that it's just been a really good
16:50experience.
17:03Officers Moya and Justin are responding to a call about threats made between neighbours.
17:08They've received an update that no weapons are involved, but Officer Moya has some useful intel
17:14about the alleged aggressor.
17:16When that call came in and they mentioned the name, I'm like, I know this guy.
17:22Bermuda is a very small island. Everybody knows everybody. And when you know a person and they
17:28feel comfortable with you, it makes your job a lot easier in getting that situation calm and being able
17:36to say, hey, walk with me, talk with me.
17:40The gentleman here is making complaint that another gentleman in the building, another occupant who
17:44resides here as well, is making threats, wanting to fight him as well as some offensive words.
17:49You have the option to have him prosecuted and you have your next option where he'll be spoken to and
17:55warned. Everything is going to be documented regardless. You can also go another avenue of
17:59getting a protection order.
18:01Basically, his complaint was that this guy had threatened him. Pretty much,
18:06he said, meet him outside, which he took as a threat.
18:08I'm just trying to attack my family right now.
18:11Right, and you guys both live on the same property.
18:13And we stay very close, yeah.
18:15Like I said, I could vote for it.
18:16Is that him?
18:17Yeah, that's him there.
18:17All right.
18:18All right, so we'll speak to him. Hopefully we can come to some sort of agreement.
18:22I would say just go to the side, just stay separate from him.
18:25I realized it was indeed the person I was thinking it to be, which assisted me in being able to speak to him.
18:34I haven't done nothing, so there's no need for me to hire Fanny there.
18:37You know how I am. I try avoiding the whole confrontation. I try, I try avoiding it.
18:41I'm not that type of person.
18:42The only reason why I did it is because you keep going to my wife.
18:45Stop saying something to my wife. Come to me.
18:47It's just giving him the opportunity to say his piece.
18:53See, you've got to give people the opportunity to say what they want to say.
18:57He felt offended because you have said some words.
19:02He did say you said that, but you...
19:04But I wasn't saying meet me outside as in my head or threatening matters.
19:06My daughter is right there in the kitchen.
19:08I'm not going to sit down and I'll give somebody in front of my daughter.
19:10So in his case, he's saying he didn't mean it as a threat.
19:14He just wanted to take it outside, so it's away from his child.
19:18So it's obvious that you two have had some miscommunication, misunderstanding.
19:23Honestly, I don't speak to him. I don't talk to him.
19:26Have you guys ever tried mediation?
19:28Honestly, no. We were graduates before.
19:30At that point, I thought of mediation because if you guys were friends,
19:35there's something you probably need to talk about that you haven't spoke about
19:39that is causing you guys to no longer be friends.
19:43With officers Moya and Justin's calm approach,
19:47the alleged aggressor and complainant agreed to take up mediation.
19:51Just take our advice. If you need anything else, you can always call us.
19:55Uh, you have my...
19:56I have your number.
19:57...so you can reach out to me.
20:00It's good that you had to report to speak with your assumption.
20:02With their shift coming to an end...
20:04I think we turned team very well.
20:07It's been a successful day on the road for Justin and Moya.
20:21Back at the nature reserve, officers Eddie and Jen are returning to an illegally parked
20:26beachgoer's car with retrieved ticket book ready in hand.
20:31Um...
20:32Ha, ha, ha.
20:32Wow.
20:35Waited for us to leave, did you?
20:36They were waiting.
20:38The mystery beachgoer is back at their car.
20:42They're still going to get a ticket.
20:45Good day and good afternoon.
20:47Did you have a reason for bringing your car in here?
20:51Well, there's massive signs all along that fencing that say this is a nature reserve.
20:56You're not supposed to have motorized vehicles.
20:57Yeah.
20:58There's a $75 ticket.
21:00If you do not pay it, they will issue a warrant for your arrest, which you do not want.
21:06All right, have a good day.
21:11She knew exactly what she was doing.
21:13Mm-hmm.
21:16Part as officers Eddie and Jen and the ticketed driver attempt to exit the nature reserve,
21:22they hit a bit of a barrier.
21:25Oh, my God.
21:26That is stuck.
21:29Oh, it ain't opening now.
21:32Let's hope we're not stuck in here.
21:34It's really not open.
21:40It's, it's, it's latched.
21:44Oh, you know what it is?
21:45It's magnetic lock.
21:46So we're locked in here?
21:47Pretty much.
21:49The gate that officer Eddie had pulled across behind them earlier is now very firmly locked shut.
21:56Us coming in and shifting the gate, put the mantle to the magnet, and now it is sealed.
22:04Which means we'll be camping tonight.
22:08Cannot make this up.
22:09In that moment, yeah, there was definitely a realisation that it's locked.
22:15I can't find a mechanism to open it.
22:17We're going to have to call for help, which kind of causes the hair to drop.
22:21The shoulders are rising.
22:23Body temperature comes up as well, yeah.
22:26You get a little warm thinking about that.
22:31But finding out who might have a key at a weekend is no easy thing.
22:36We're stuck.
22:38I don't know who we're supposed to call.
22:40I think the fire department has access.
22:42I'm going to call, come up, and see what direction they can give us for getting out.
22:49Help us, we're trapped inside of Cooper's Island.
22:52Should we call them or can you guys call them?
22:54It was hot and it probably felt the heat because I was the one that got stuck there.
22:58I'm guessing that's the code machine.
23:02So Marshall said she's going to call dispatch and just see what they say.
23:08It's most likely going to have to be fire or parks.
23:12I was definitely taking on the responsibility of that one.
23:15Apparently, the fire service does not have a key.
23:20And in the meantime, I got to sweat it up, literally.
23:22Yeah, that's going to walk that way.
23:43Bermuda is made up of nine parishes.
23:46Going east to west, the western end of the island forms a bit of a fish hook.
23:53The dockyard is effectively the tip of the fish hook and it sort of swings around.
23:58You've got Somerset, Southampton, and then comes into this land mass.
24:03The main city of Hamilton, fairly densely populated, and carries up.
24:07You've got St. George's, St. David's, towards the eastern end of the island.
24:16Also in the east of the island is Tucker's Town, a gated peninsula dubbed Billionaire's Row.
24:23This is normally the richer part of the island.
24:29Fresh from resulting the dispute between neighbours, officers Moya and Justin are back on patrol.
24:37I know at some point it was said, I can confirm it, that even Oprah was interested on a piece of property.
24:44I've heard that too.
24:45Yeah.
24:47It's crazy, the amount of money that is really here and very dope.
24:52Yeah.
24:54It's a chance to see how the other half live.
24:57Every single house in this area has the most amazing views.
25:02And everybody has access to a private page, which I would love.
25:07Houses here can go for as much as $25 million.
25:10Work every day, you know, do a lot of overtime.
25:14Even then, you cannot afford one of these houses.
25:17You know, you get a group of, like, maybe five offices together and you have shingles.
25:22Oh, sure.
25:23See, or the other way you're going to own one of these houses,
25:27you're going to have to get a shingle ball.
25:29Yes.
25:36Careful, watch the little chickies.
25:38It's been almost one hour since officers Eddie and Jen got stuck behind the gate of the nature reserve.
25:57We are magnetically locked inside this gate.
26:00And we will be waiting until fire service or parks, whoever has access to this code,
26:06can come and give us free.
26:10I've actually been stuck in Cooper's Island behind this gate before.
26:16My sister's wedding.
26:17When we got to the gate, it was locked and we couldn't get out.
26:20So we were waiting, like, an hour and a half.
26:23Ended up missing, like, the beginning of the reception.
26:27This has never happened to me because I've never been in her inside a vehicle.
26:30So this is my first time and I am not annoyed by this at all.
26:33Not one little bit.
26:37Even for an officer of Eddie's experience, every shift can still contain a life lesson.
26:43This is definitely a moment to remember.
26:48I will not forget that.
26:50Magnetic gate.
26:51Do not close it all the way.
26:54This is rookie move.
26:56Yeah.
26:57This is new boy, school boy, baby boy move.
27:02And I got nobody else to blame but myself.
27:05Finally, after a long wait in the afternoon sun, the man with the key arrives
27:13to release the sheepish officers from their self-enforced captivity.
27:19You all right, man?
27:20Yes, sir.
27:20I always say, if you go in, you should know your way out.
27:23Thank you. I do appreciate you.
27:25No problem.
27:25We're finally free.
27:27It's been a relaxing evening, for sure.
27:33Stuck behind the gate in this beautiful paradise.
27:37It's a little stressful for me being a dumb dude one who closed the gate and
27:42put us on restrictive duties.
27:46But I am happy it's open.
27:48It was hot.
27:49Yeah.
27:49Moral of the story, I don't like being locked behind bars.
27:52So it's a good thing I'm not this side of the law.
27:55Next time, officers Brydon and Shandora are on the trail of motorbike thieves.
28:04My sergeant was behind a motorcycle that's being stolen.
28:07Are you burning up as well?
28:08And the police keeping Bermuda's road safe are feeling the heat.
28:11I should have melted about 10 pounds off since the time we've been here.
28:21There are no place.
28:23I'm not a church.
28:23I'm not, I must have a picture of the way up as well.
28:24I'm on the trail of motorbike.
28:25I'm brown and I'll be burning up as well.
28:26And the and the snow would be on the trail of motorbike.
28:31I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
28:33But I can't believe so.
28:34What are your circumstances?
28:36If you're still there, you're still there, you can't believe so.
28:42You're still there.
28:43So I can't believe so.
28:45I can't believe so.
28:47I'm sorry.
