Martin Dempster on Masters Day 1
Transcript
00:01Hello, it's Martin Dempster, the Scotsman Golf Correspondent here, coming to you about 9 o'clock American time at the end of the first day of the 89th Masters.
00:17The star of the show today was Englishman Justin Rose, the 2014 Scottish Open champion, carded a 7-under par 65, which equaled his best round at Augusta National.
00:34It's the fifth time Rose has either been in the lead or shared the lead after the opening 18 holes in this event, and it's now nine times that he's been in that position at some stage in the tournament.
00:51He's not won the green jacket yet, finished runner-up in both 2015 and 2017, and while there's a long way to go, there's no doubt that he's a danger man around this golf course.
01:07As is Scott Scheffler, of course, the world number one, who's won this event twice in the last three years.
01:16He's one of three players, three shots behind Rose, the others being Swede Ludwig Eberg, who finished runner-up on his debut 12 months ago,
01:28and Canadian Corey Connors, who's had three top ten finishes in just seven starts here.
01:36Rory McIlroy, who, of course, has been to complete a career Grand Slam, he was going along nicely at four-under par after 14 holes.
01:48However, the Northern Rhinishman took a double bogey seven at the 15th, where he put his third shot in the water, and then had another double at the 17th, which certainly took the shine of his day.
02:06Bob McIntyre, the sole scot in the field, he opened with a three-over par, 75.
02:13Bob was disappointed with that effort.
02:15He three-putted from three feet at the 7th, then skied his drive at the 13th, dropping a shot there.
02:22However, he didn't play badly.
02:26He's lying in a tie for 63rd, and he's aimed tomorrow in the second round,
02:33will be to climb into the top 50 in ties to make the final 36 over the weekend.
