00:00In today's time, Rajkumar Rao is a very sensible actor, very nice actor. I'd like to work with him.
00:10Vicky Kaushal is a very hardworking actor. I'd like to work with him.
00:15And there are some other good actors who are not that well known but they are very, very good actors.
00:22So I'd like to work with them.
00:24I recently discovered an actor, Hansal Mehta discovered him, Aditya Rawal.
00:31Aditya Rawal is Paresh Rawal's son.
00:33Now according to me, he is the next star.
00:36If you give him good films.
00:40So I had told people about Shahid that he is the next star.
00:46Go for him.
00:48So it's a question of actually seeing the ability of an actor or not the name or the fame or the positioning of an actor.
00:56So these are the names I think I'd like to work with.
01:00The press people, the trade people in particular, some exhibitors also.
01:18I will never forget that.
01:20Because they thought that Shahid has become a threat now to the stars.
01:24Because he dances like Bijli, he is a very good actor, he has everything.
01:29So don't let him go ahead.
01:31So because of that they damaged the film.
01:33So from that time, I felt that antagonism, that professional envy.
01:42At that time, all the people who were reigning, they all felt that
01:46I believe when Hrithik Roshan came, there was a movement that don't let him go ahead, he is a threat.
01:54Here, even as a director, a lot of people feel that I am a threat.
02:00Because they feel that if we allow him, if we give him footage, if we give him publicity,
02:07he will make something which can be better than ours.
02:12You talked about popular cinema.
02:15The so-called pioneers of offbeat cinema, the messiahs here,
02:22they also have a big clique, they also have a big gang
02:26who are busy boycotting people like me.
02:29Because they don't want it.
02:32I am not qualified enough to come for a Wim Wenders press conference.
02:37They won't call me.
02:39Their 5-10 people are filmmakers.
02:42I am not a filmmaker.
02:43Why? You know, everyone knows.
02:46There are only 10 people who are our symbols of filmmaking.
02:52The great kings of filmmaking.
02:54I am nothing.
02:56So don't take this man's films ahead, don't distribute his films.
03:01Don't call this man here.
03:03We have such important things.
03:05I am not asking anyone to call me for a premiere.
03:08I don't go to parties, I don't go to premieres.
03:10When filmmakers like Wim Wenders come,
03:13or there is a retrospective of a great filmmaker,
03:16I am not worthy of being invited.
03:25As a director, I will say that
03:28I have a habit that when I make a film,
03:33when I make the next film,
03:35I deliberately try to make a better film than that film.
03:40Because I want to grow as a director.
03:44I don't need to prove anything.
03:47So after the second film, I want to do a better job than the third film.
03:50I mean, the concept should be better than that.
03:53I have already made 15 films.
03:55And every time I think, what should I do that is better than this?
03:59Better than this? Better than this?
04:01I think the last two films that I have made,
04:04Bitter Sweet, which is about sugarcane workers,
04:09in Beed, the women sugarcane workers,
04:12that is a Marathi film, Kadugol,
04:15they are being tortured.
04:17There is a racket going on.
04:19When they have a menstrual cycle every month,
04:24they are not able to work for four days.
04:26And the sugarcane cutting season is only for six months.
04:30So what will they do for the remaining six months?
04:32They will have to earn enough money to sustain themselves for six months.
04:36So if you go for four days every month,
04:39six into four is twenty-four days,
04:41which is almost a month.
04:43So you lose that much money.
04:45You don't get a salary.
04:47So some doctor from Patna,
04:50I don't know where this racket started from,
04:53he came and sat in Beed,
04:55and told them that there is a very simple solution.
04:59You do a hysterectomy.
05:01Hysterectomy means to remove the uterus.
05:04So all your problems will be solved.
05:07There will be no menstrual cycle.
05:09Even if someone tries to rape you,
05:12nothing will happen to you.
05:14You won't be pregnant.
05:16This is a very heart-wrenching thing.
05:21And a lot of women have done this.
05:24So I made a film on this, Bitter Sweet.
05:27I think I have come somewhere as a filmmaker.
05:35Although I am very unsatisfied with myself.
05:41Because when I watch international films,
05:43when I watch master's films,
05:45and when I watch such good foreign films,
05:48I feel that I have so many shortcomings,
05:51that I have to overcome them.
05:53But people don't allow you to overcome them.
05:56If I take a subject like that,
05:59which they make,
06:01a subject of India, not an old subject,
06:04people don't listen to it.
06:06We are not interested in this kind of thing.
06:09Bring something else.
06:11So it's tough.
06:14But these are the two films,
06:16Bitter Sweet and Storyteller,
06:19which have been extremely satisfying for me.
06:22Although Sindhu Ta Sabkaal gave me four national awards,
06:25or Dr. Rakhma Bhai was a big film.
06:28But as a director, I think I have grown with these two films.
06:31I am never happy with my performances.
06:34They are people with big hearts.
06:37But I am in search of a role,
06:40in which I can turn myself inside out.
06:44And do it.
06:46Purnaya Pandit was a lifetime role.
06:49In that, I got a whole journey of 25-60 years.
06:55That way, I was very satisfied with that.
06:58But otherwise, I am still waiting for the good role.
