Malaysia and Asean countries need to come together and form an agreement on the tariffs announced by the United States to ensure that upcoming negotiations and discussions have a solid foundation, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said that although the tariff announcement by US President Donald Trump was made on questionable grounds, Asean countries should not take the matter lightly, especially in the current uncertain global economic and political climate.

00:00Yesterday, I explained in detail the decision to hold a special meeting to discuss the tariff announcement by President Donald Trump,
00:15which was also presented by the entire Cabinet.
00:19We cannot take it lightly.
00:22Although we know that this is a bit strange, because among the strongest countries that support free trade,
00:33the WTO and GATT were the richest countries, including and mainly the United States.
00:46However, the situation has changed.
00:49That is why I said that since the post-normal times, we have seen some unexpected political and economic policies.
01:03This includes the tariff announcement on a very weak basis.
01:11The decision-making mechanism of the tariff was broken down on a very weak basis.
01:22Because some of the countries mentioned include the islands that are only inhabited by penguins.
01:33That means that it has not yet been thoroughly investigated.
01:36But as a country, of course, we want to make a decision that is a bit too tough.
01:42But the policy of the Cabinet is, first, to determine what has been decided in detail.
01:54Because this is a general statement, and there is still room for discussion.
02:00Secondly, there are also some exceptions that we want to make sure of first.
02:07So maybe we take a simple path.
02:10Then it is my duty as a foreign minister and related ministers to encourage our ASEAN colleagues
02:21so that there is the establishment of each country.
02:25And besides that, we stand firm as a large group.
02:32Because ASEAN has a population of 40 million, and the economy is one of the most powerful in the world.
02:39If we combine all of them, it is considered one of the most secure regions in the world.
02:47And it is a region that promotes rapid growth and confidence in the world.
02:55So we benefit from it.
02:57Yesterday, President Prabowo came for dinner,
03:07Syed Latuf Rahim and Semangat Aidilfitri.
03:12And we had a chance to discuss this issue.
03:15President Ghazal, Myanmar.
03:18This is an international relationship.
03:23I also had a long discussion with the Vietnamese Prime Minister.
03:27And before that, I contacted all of them.
03:30The Philippines, Brunei, Laos, Thailand.
03:36To state that we have our own values,
03:40but we use the strength of the relationship to strengthen it
03:45so that ASEAN, as a group,
03:49stands firm and shows an agreement.
03:55So the basis for the negotiation is stronger.
