00:00Yesterday on the Pat McAfee show formerly of the Sports Grid Network was
00:04kind of making a joke about all the April Fool's jokes that he saw his name
00:08involved in, teams he was traded to, contracts he had signed and when he saw
00:13that quote from Blackburn the EVP of the Bengals he said he hoped it was April
00:18Fool's as well. When it wasn't he realized it was rather disappointing. The
00:24Bengals take maybe a small step forward and many steps back. Here we are once
00:29again. I believe I can't remember what draft it was but I want to say Alabama
00:32do you remember the name Ben Andre Smith one of the you know better young left
00:36tackles yes college football he got drafted to the Bengals he slipped down
00:40the board just a little bit till he got to the Bengals so when the Bengals
00:43drafted him there like you said okay we're the which are over excuse me
00:47overdrafted him a little bit I should say you know whatever it was a top 10
00:50pick I can't remember exactly what it was but the negotiation between the
00:53Bengals and him was no no no no no we think you should have been like 15 or 16
00:57you went like 7 or 8 or whatever it was we want to pay you like the 16th slot
01:01and the agent goes it's not the way it works like you drafted me at this spot
01:04here we're supposed to get paid a certain amount of money just to give a
01:07little bit of backtrack on how the Bengals actually think but over the
01:10years the Cincinnati Bengals been the cheapest organization of football by a
01:13wide margin charging anywhere from meals that you get at the facility to extra
01:17socks or game pants that you wanted to wear they did it all at this point so I
01:20just want to set the table for the negotiating skills and also for the
01:24Bengals always getting that bargain hey you got three or four felonies and
01:26nobody else will sign you good you're worth really 20 million a year we'll pay
01:30you three million dollars a year welcome to Cincinnati they've done that with
01:32multiple players over the year so now it sets the table for you're really good
01:36football players and deserve the pay grades and upgrades now granted you
01:40might say Donnie they did pay Joe Barrow they did that quarterback to what you're
01:43supposed to do number one overall pick keep him in your franchise then the wide
01:47receiver is that you could have signed two or three years earlier and saved a
01:50ton of money didn't do that but I do give you credit for getting those
01:52players signed but here's where it comes down to it is a lot of fun if you
01:55remember also Carson Palmer 20 years ago I hate this team I hate this
02:00organization just trade me out here and they go yeah we'll trade you at our
02:04price to first-round draft picks he sat and rotted on the bench and the Bengals
02:08were worse for the wear at that point but finally find a dumber organization
02:11in the the Raiders Oakland Raiders to make a trade for him at the two
02:14first-rounders and away you went so now we get to Trey Hendrickson who they're
02:18gambling in bad faith with him saying oh you want to trade yeah of course we'll
02:23shop it around we want to number ones back and if we don't get it you'll
02:27gladly come back here and you will play under the salary we deem is effective
02:31for you well it's not necessarily how it works around the NFL with one-way
02:34contracts where hey good player wants a new contract either trade him or pay him
02:38and keep everybody happy so if you're Trey Hendricks gone look at all of these
02:42defensive ends I led the league in sacks you don't want to pay me you said you
02:46trade me but now when teams probably go we'll give you a high second round you
02:50go no it's two ones or he stays right here I could see the anger and the angst
02:54at knowing my big payday is here and my organization have done nothing but sack
02:59the quarterback and do what you tell me that you're not gonna let me actually
03:02get a trade or pay me what I'm worth I understand
