00:00How about getting paid in
00:03Cincinnati? Something that
00:04we didn't think was going
00:04to happen. How about both
00:06wide receivers, Jamar
00:07Chase and also T. Higgins
00:10record breaking contract
00:11extensions. Chase four
00:14years, one hundred and
00:15sixty one million dollars,
00:17which includes one hundred
00:17and twelve million dollars
00:19guaranteed. Higgins four
00:20years, one hundred and
00:22fifteen million dollars and
00:23guaranteed for the first
00:24two years. So now we have
00:27Joe Burrow, high paid
00:27quarterback, double wide
00:29receiver at this point.
00:30But the questions always
00:32settle in for us. Yes, we
00:33love the signings of the
00:34two wideouts. Yes, we love
00:35the quarterback being in
00:37town. No, we don't love a
00:38defense that can't stop
00:40anybody. And if there's
00:40money left over. So, Ben,
00:43we look at this deal and
00:43say, yeah, on the bet. But
00:46if we did it last year,
00:47maybe we could afford a
00:48defense in Cincinnati.
00:49The Bengals were a big
00:50time over team a season
00:51ago. That seems to be the
00:53recipe this time around.
00:54Al Golden, new defensive
00:56coordinator in Cincy, who
00:57was last year, the D.C.
00:59for a Notre Dame team that
01:00finished national runner up
01:02in collegiate football. He
01:03was probably like, so what
01:05did that Trey Hendrickson
01:05guy we traded him or we
01:06try to get him back? How
01:08about Jermaine Pratt, one
01:09of our defensive leaders as
01:12well? That is the story.
01:12DRS for the overall
01:14outlook. I'm glad the
01:15Bengals came through on
01:17their promise to at least
01:17pay two of their three guys
01:20of this young core and
01:21trio where everybody
01:24deserved to be paid. But
01:24again, we said this early
01:25in the off season. If we
01:28even take Cincinnati at
01:29that point, and for a
01:30while, that felt a little
01:32bit dicey. It does not
01:33mean we should compliment
01:34them outside of all right.
01:36You got the deal done
01:36because this could have
01:38happened a long time ago
01:39with T Higgins after the
01:40end of his rookie deal, not
01:42being tagged twice, although
01:43the extension now it could
01:44have happened last off
01:45season for Jamar Chase,
01:47resetting the market, then
01:48not having to pay catch up
01:51play catch up in terms of
01:51what he had to be paid.
01:54Justin Jefferson last off
01:54season was the highest paid
01:57non quarterback in NFL
01:58history. The Bengals had
01:58to pay a ton of headlines
02:02getting $35 million. Per
02:04year, but the Bengals then
02:05promised Jamar Chase he
02:06would be the highest paid
02:08non QB ever. Max Crosby
02:10and the Raiders outdid
02:11Justin Jefferson and
02:13Minnesota, Miles Garrett
02:14and the Browns outdid even
02:15Max Crosby at $40 million
02:18per year. The Bengals had
02:20to pay an extra $5 million
02:22per season just to be good
02:24on their word that Jamar
02:24Chase would be the highest
02:27paid non QB ever. The
02:28Bengals missed the
02:28flexibility, the foresight,
02:31not there for the Bengals,
02:32although Jamar Chase and
02:33T. Higgins happy raking in
02:35all the millions of dollars
02:36they just signed last night.
02:37Let's understand this point
02:38because here's what matters
02:39most. Look at the team last
02:42year. They had Joe Burrow,
02:43they had Jamar Chase, they
02:44had T. Higgins, they had
02:46Trey Hendrickson. They also
02:47had a record that didn't get
02:48them in the playoffs at nine
02:49and eight overall. So now
02:50what did you do this year?
02:53Record breaking extension
02:54for Higgins, record breaking
02:56extension for Trey Hendrickson.
02:57And now you're saying like,
02:58you know what? I think we
02:59might be able to sign Trey
03:00Hendrickson. Let's see if we
03:01can put it together. So all
03:02three players, massive raises,
03:04which hurts your ability to
03:05bring in other talent. And
03:07once again, this isn't the
03:08preservation mode of boy, we
03:10won a Super Bowl last year.
03:11Let's stay in this window.
03:13The window has never even
03:14opened just yet for the
03:15Cincinnati Bengals who made a
03:16Super Bowl just a few years
03:17previous on a much
03:19quarterback friendly deal
03:20because just got a rookie
03:21contract there. Same thing
03:22with the wide receivers on
03:23the team. Now you're looking
03:24at them saying, boy, I think
03:25a hill to climb is just that
03:26much harder because, again,
03:27the beating point is if all
03:29three of these were signed
03:30and last year you'd have more
03:31money in your cap to go out
03:32and get after everybody
03:33else. I know it's easy to
03:34look at the Philadelphia
03:35Eagles and say, well, they
03:36have the same wide receivers
03:37and quarterback here. A
03:38hundred million dollars
03:40cheaper by signing sooner
03:42than then later.
