Some much needed good news for the #RedSox ! Sox extend their new ace Garrett Crochet for 6-years, $170M. Thoughts on deal? Win/win?
Transcript
00:00almost like you, I have turned from being bothered by the preparation of the player or the attitude
00:12of the player to a genuine concern that mentally he may never be able to hit a baseball ever again.
00:22I told you I brought up Dontrell Willis and Chuck Knobloch.
00:24I know you brought up Chuck Knobloch who famously when playing for the Yankees
00:29became unable to throw the baseball from second base to first base.
00:34It was a gold glove there at one time.
00:40It is historically bad when you look at his inability to make contact with the baseball
00:48through five games of the Major League Baseball season.
00:52People were laughing about the caller yesterday who said they need to get the best psychologist
00:56in there and fix whatever's going on.
00:58He's spot on.
01:00It is all a mental game when it comes to where we see Raphael Devers right now.
01:06His brain is not computing with his limbs, with his legs, with his arms.
01:12Nothing is computing.
01:17There are so many people who are coming at him pretty hard.
01:21He does not want to look this way.
01:23I do not know how you fix it.
01:28I do not know if you sit him for a reasonable period of time.
01:34Does he like Worcester?
01:35I mean, beautiful area, Curtis.
01:39The Worcester area.
01:43I guess you just keep giving him at-bats and hope he somehow gets himself out of the slump.
01:50It is not looking good for Ralphie Devers.
01:58You keep giving him those at-bats.
02:00Does he get out of the slump?
02:02If he does not get out of the slump, then you have to have the serious conversation of,
02:07what direction are we going in with this player?
02:13Baseball players get in slumps all the time.
02:15But it seems like it is more than just him being in a slump.
02:19It is all the other stuff that is going on with the third base situation that could be
02:24affecting him.
02:25And is it better for him to change his scenery and you as an organization to move on from
02:31this game?
02:33A listener DMed me yesterday and said they ought to just give in and let him play third
02:37base and see if he can then hit the baseball, which I do not believe they are going to do
02:42that.
02:43No, unlikely.
02:44Maybe Dr. Diana could give him a check.
02:46Maybe she could.
02:48I, at this point, whatever it takes.
02:52Honestly, maybe they need to get Mike Greenwell back here and sacrifice some kind of foul
02:59or something.
03:00What was his nickname, Greg?
03:01Greeny.
03:02Nope.
03:03Oh, the Gator.
03:05See, I am right there with you, Curtis.
03:06And what is his theme park called in Florida?
03:10Gator World?
03:11Gator Land.
03:13Kid Rock was at the White House.
03:15Maybe Gator will be there next.
03:16Who knows?
03:17I think that there was some kind of ritualistic, if I remember correctly, sacrifice of a chicken
03:21or something.
03:22Yeah, I believe that was major league, but it was also it was also Mike Greenwell.
03:26So, I mean, there are slump busters and certainly there have been some legendary ones.
03:33So maybe that's what it is.
03:35Or maybe I don't know.
03:36Maybe we need to get as a show.
03:39We need to get Raphael Devers some kind of like a puppy or, you know, somebody in Twitch
03:46suggested maybe some kind of a service dog or something like that.
03:50Something that could could be with him when the fellas are out there playing defense and
03:55he is alone on the bench.
03:57Curtis, somebody to keep in company.
03:58Are you saying Veritek didn't do the job in consoling him properly?
04:01No, maybe an imaginary friend of some.
04:03Maybe Shyam can lend him an imaginary friend.
04:06Right.
04:06Could be a good job for Pudge's pal.
04:08Oh, and today would have been Pudge's 13th birthday.
04:11Love you, buddy.
04:11Oh, happy birthday, Pudge in heaven.
04:14Do we get an adoption from Friday yet?
04:16I have to check.
04:17I will see into that right now.
04:19Look into that right now.
04:20All right.
04:20Well, there is some good news from the Boston Red Sox, and that is a deal with Garrett Crochet.
04:27That is smart for that.
04:28And it is a lengthy deal and a very reasonably when it comes to the Red Sox and to the player,
04:37I think a very reasonable amount of money for both in this deal.
04:42So it works out to about AAV wise, about $28 million a year, something like that for Garrett
04:48Crochet, $175, $170, $170 million.
04:53Yeah, it's a smart move by them.
04:54We had this conversation where if you wait and he has a really good season, that $28
04:59might go up to $35 or $36.
05:00So it's a great move by them.
05:02And he probably wanted to be in a position where when you compare him to a guy similar
05:07age, the guy Yamamoto, he's making a little bit more.
05:11$27 is what Yamamoto makes.
05:13He makes $28.
05:14So I think it's a perfect thing for him.
05:16And then as an out after like, what, four years or something like that.
05:19So it's good money for him and a good job by the Red Sox to not prolong it.
05:23Five year out in 2030.
05:27And so you end up being protected.
05:30I can't, Curtis, anything bad at all in this?
05:33I think it's all really positive for the Red Sox.
05:35A plus.
05:36There's nothing you could say negative about it.
05:38This is a great deal.
05:40And for both sides, now Crochet generationally has set his family up.
05:45And no matter what, it's guaranteed, unlike obviously in football.
05:49And now, even if he plays the deal out, he's 32.
05:53And if he is what we think he is, he could get another $200 to $300 million.
05:57Right.
05:57So win-win on both sides.
06:00Great suggestion on the Subaru of New England text line,
06:04where you can reach us at any point over the next four hours.
06:08And the texter is suggesting that Courtney and her mom
06:13take Raphael Devers to Friendly's.
06:15We would love to.
06:16For a Friendly's moment.
06:19Might cost you a little more than normal.
06:21Yeah, I don't think it has anything to do with his weight.
06:23I'm guessing probably wants a fribble and some kind of a melt.
06:27He needs something bad.
06:29Fribble sounds so good right now.
06:30Cheeseburger melt or tuna melt or maybe both.
06:33Get him something.
06:34He needs something bad.
06:36He does.
06:36He needs help.
06:37Raphael Devers.
06:38And it's on us to try to find a way to help him on this very show this morning.
