Better chance Sox make playoffs, or finish last in A.L. East? Was this season a success? If Sox don't make playoffs, will there be more moves in off-season?
Transcript
00:00So, if you would have bet $100, would you bet that the Red Sox are going to make the
00:05playoffs or finish last place again?
00:07The latter.
00:08Yeah, unfortunately, the latter.
00:11I will say baseball, Brett was talking to me yesterday about the Sox, wanted me to ask
00:16you a question, Curtis.
00:19Would you prefer that this season the Sox finish in last place and that somehow compels
00:25ownership to do something or that they somehow, they're four and a half back on that last
00:31wild card spot, that they get it and they feel complacent?
00:33Yeah, I would rather the first thing you mentioned.
00:36I feel like...
00:37Will ownership finally react though if they finish in last?
00:40I think they have to.
00:42But we've said that, Wiggy, last offseason, you said it's show hay time because they had
00:46to act.
00:47You said it over and over again and I agreed.
00:50They are not.
00:51This is just...
00:52What it was, Curtis, I think, was this year of being a...
00:58Not a year...
00:59And I know they say, oh, they always get high expectations in the building.
01:02I don't always believe that, but I think they looked at it like, we don't have great high
01:06expectations.
01:08The chances of us getting show hay might be slim.
01:11We made a little bit of a run for Yamamoto, but this offseason, when you re-sign Cora
01:18after three years, you're telling us that you expect to win between now and the time
01:24he leaves.
01:25So I almost feel like the re-signing of Cora was a great thing because now it puts their
01:30feet to the fire to do something this offseason to really put a competitive...
01:34Oh, I disagree, Wiggy.
01:35I feel like if Cora left, they would have to spend because they couldn't lean on the
01:40manager as the face of the organization.
01:41Yeah, but Cora's got to get to the point where he's like, if I'm going to come back and do
01:46this job, I got to do it with a team that can realistically compete for a World Series.
01:53He's not coming back here to just...
01:55You could make promises though and not fulfill them.
01:57Like the front office could tell Alex Cora all that he wants to hear to make sure that
02:01he signs on a dotted line.
02:03But you don't have to do that much.
02:05Like you look, we talked about it earlier, but you look at last night, it's the bullpen
02:09over and over and over again.
02:12You get a starting pitcher, you get a righty bat.
02:15I am bullpen guy.
02:17And you're like, you're right there.
02:20And don't you think with Breslau, do you believe him when he says that the only way that you
02:24have a successful season is a World Series?
02:26Like when he comes on this show and says that, I think in their minds, this was a successful
02:30season because they did play better than most people thought they were going to for most
02:34of the season.
02:35But they're going to finish up in the exact same spot.
02:36I know, but I think for most of the season, they were able to kind of take victory laps
02:41around criticizers.
02:43I think they are, they are resting on the laurels of the prospects and that they are,
02:49they locked down Cora and they are, the future is bright.
02:54And so they are going to hope that that's enough to get you there.
02:56But see, do you think Cora's a smart guy?
02:58Yeah.
02:59Right.
03:00So there's no way that Cora is signing on the dotted dotted line.
03:04Wiggia texter says he got $21 million.
03:06He doesn't care.
03:07No, I don't buy that.
03:08I think Cora, you could tell it, even though I might criticize him, you could tell that
03:14it hurts, that his team is irrelevant and there's no way he comes back, especially with
03:21his resume because we all, you guys always talked about it.
03:23Cora could have landed, you know, 10 other places and got that money.
03:28So there's no way he's coming back under, you know, them going, well, we're just kind
03:34of like building off the young guys.
03:36And no, I think they, Cora said, I'll come back, but we really have to be a significant
03:41player when it comes to this off season with adding guys that we know are proven in this
03:47league and high end talent to go with some of these young kids.
03:50I just sit here and I see them standing on the prospects that other people brought in
03:55as a reason to buy into Craig Breslow.
03:57And I laugh at it because Craig Breslow, I sadly won't be joining us tomorrow.
04:03Has not?
04:04No.
04:05Must've had a conflicting event at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
04:08Busy.
04:09Busy.
04:10I mean, you know, somehow I think if the team was on a seven game winning streak, they might
04:13be free.
04:14But, you know, what do I know?
04:17There's been no evidence that he has any clue what the hell he's doing.
04:20And so you enter this off season based on the top.
04:23They're going to sell baseball.
04:24America.
04:25Greg mentioned it.
04:26They have all these prospects in the top 100.
04:28None of them were brought in by the people that are currently running the baseball team.
04:32So I just, it's, I want to believe you, Wiggy.
04:35I want to think that they're going to invest, but I have no, nothing to base that on.
04:40Well, you know why they're sitting on all those prospects?
04:42We talked about it a little bit.
04:44Really making big moves this off season.
04:46You asked for a right handed bat.
04:48I mean, maybe you go after a guy like Vlad Guerrero.
04:51You know, there are, there are some of those things.
04:54What did, um, didn't Juan Soto from the Yankees, isn't he only on a one year deal with them?
05:02So there's another possible guy that could be hitting free agency that maybe you make
05:07a run at.
05:08So I think maybe they said, we got some of these young prospects and if we need to trade
05:12them, we're able to do that in the off season to go out and get your high end starting pitcher
05:18that you want, Greg, or your high end bullpen guy.
05:21And maybe they use some of those prospects to dangle.
05:23Just reminded me question for you, which I was asked yesterday by William, my, my very
05:29good friend that Ashlawn, the, uh, uh, the, uh, works on the weekdays at Ashlawn.
05:34Great guy.
05:35Loves the show.
05:36What up Willie?
05:37Fantastic.
05:38Unbelievable guy.
05:39I call him Liam.
05:40Uh, uh, do you think he does not believe it is, uh, right in the universe that Shohei
05:48is going to, you know, that every, everybody thinks he should be MVP, uh, when he's only
05:54DH-ing this season, do you have an issue with that?
05:58Oh, I don't have an issue with that.
06:02I it's, I think it's, I don't really, cause isn't it really about what you could do?
06:08I mean, it, he's the first guy to go, what does he have 45 stolen bases and 40 plus home
06:13runs.
06:14You could join the 50, 50 club.
06:15Right.
06:16So, I mean, and you look at his career and thinking he could be, obviously he'll be probably
06:21pitching on next year, but I could see Shohei, it's probably going to go to Aaron judge,
06:27but I could see Shohei, you know, getting MVP.
06:29I don't really care if it's a DH he's, he's a big part of in the world of the baseball
06:34guys.
06:35I know Curtis is the baseball guy.
06:36What's the one?
06:37Is it the war stat?
06:38Yeah.
06:39Winnebago replacement.
06:40Yeah.
06:41So I bet that's pretty high for a guy like Sean will be judge will be American league
06:44MVP.
06:45Uh, you show.
06:46Oh yeah.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Yeah.
06:49Yeah.
06:50I'm sorry about that.
06:51Yeah.
06:52So I would have no problem with that at all.
06:53Why does he need to play the field?
06:54You know, you have others who are, you know, in contention who do both.
06:58Right.
06:59But in baseball, it's like, all right, if you don't play the field.
07:01So what?
07:02I mean, like Aaron judge, do we ever talk about his fielding abilities?
07:08I know he's got a pretty good arm from right field, but it's not like, that's not, what's
07:12going to win him the MVP it's his, what he does at the plate, not more like the biggest
07:19thing in baseball.
07:20Yeah.
07:21So.
