00:00In a world constantly evolving with the latest technology, it's easy to forget the charms
00:07of the past. But recently, something unexpected has been happening. Retro media, things like
00:13vinyl records, cassette tapes and VHS cassettes are making a stunning comeback. What's driving
00:19this resurgence though? It's not just nostalgia, though it does play a role. People are rediscovering
00:25the beauty of analogue experiences. Recently, industry body the British Phonographic Institute
00:31announced that the volume of physical sales showed vinyl records to be up by 9%. This
00:37tracks a progressive increase in vinyl sales across the last few years. Photography has
00:42joined this movement too. With the rise of digital photography, it's easy to forget
00:47the art of film. UK-based retailer Film Camera Store says the spike in film and film camera
00:53sales is down to Millennials and Gen Z. Then there's the humble VHS. But for many, it's
00:59not just about the movie, it's about the experience itself. The excitement of rewinding,
01:03the quirky quality of the picture, and the personal connection with those old family
01:07videos and forgotten favourites. In fact, recent research has even suggested that CD
01:12sales are growing, with CD sales increasing year on year. Sales of CDs rose 2% in 2023,
01:19the first revenue in two decades. Key Production found that Gen Z is listening to more vinyl,
01:25CDs and cassettes than any other age group in the UK. It's thought that the appeal
01:29for analogue is deeply rooted in a desire for authenticity, for a slower, more deliberate
01:34connection to the media we consume. Young and old alike are reportedly embracing these
01:40nostalgic treasures. In our ever-connected world, perhaps it's the moments of disconnect,
01:45the pause button, the rewind, the tactile, that help us really truly connect to our present.
01:51Recently, Phil Halliday, Managing Director of HMV, also said that more shoppers are buying
01:56Blu-ray and DVDs of movies and TV shows, even despite the rise in streaming platforms.
02:02Halliday attributed this trend to several factors, which included collectors' interests
02:07and the growing number of streaming services leading to confusion about content availability
02:13and rising subscription costs. He said that people are willing to pay for physical copies
02:18of shows or films they know they will re-watch. Physical media reportedly continues to be popular,
02:24items to buy amongst many collectors.
