Spain has joined Canada and Sweden in proclaiming its government to be "feminist." But what does that mean?
Transcript
00:00I am a feminist.
00:02This government is part of the philosophy of equality
00:06that the feminist movement claims at a global level.
00:09Maybe in the longer run we will not have to call the governments feminists
00:12because we will have achieved the objective.
00:30The three principles are guiding principles in this world
00:46and we call it the famous three R's.
00:48R for Rights, Equal Opportunity and Gender Issues
00:52is an issue of rights, human rights.
00:53We are born equal, women and men have the same rights.
00:56We have to see that women's rights are pursued and supported and defended
01:01wherever, in every context, be it at national level, European level, international level.
01:06The second R is the Representation.
01:09Representation implies that in every forum,
01:12be it in the private sector, be it in the public sector,
01:15if a decision is taken that concerns a woman,
01:18a woman should be sitting at the table,
01:20developing the policy, addressing the decision,
01:23influencing it with her own views and thoughts
01:26so that we see that the best decisions are taken
01:29and they incorporate already in the policy formulation
01:32the needs of women at every level.
01:35And the third R, the three R's,
01:37Rights, Representation and Resources.
01:40Women have different needs, girls have different needs,
01:44so it actually is important to see that resources are adequate
01:49to also meet the needs identified for young girls
01:53or for women.
02:23RIGHTS, REPRESENTATION AND RESOURCES
02:54RIGHTS, REPRESENTATION AND RESOURCES
03:05Mr. President, if I didn't know you, Mrs. President,
03:08start with transforming yourself.
03:12Take the bold decision, if you are the leader,
03:15half of your population are women,
03:18are girls, are young women, are women, are elder women,
03:22and they have to be integrated into the policies, into the economics of your country.
03:28Otherwise, you will be losing out that portion of the population that will contribute constructively.
03:34Women's rights are human rights. We are born equal,
03:38and that those rights have to be promoted throughout any policy area.
