During Friday’s ‘Fight Oligarchy’ event in Denver, Colorado, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) discussed the importance of community building in the fight against authoritarianism.

00:00But I'm not curious in telling you that, because you know which Coloradans did vote to gut
00:06Maggie and Jack O'Connor off?
00:09Every single Republican representative from Colorado and U.S.A.
00:17Don't you worry, don't you worry.
00:20I was just at Gabe Evans' district earlier today and a lot of his, 11,000 of his constituents
00:26would like a word with him.
00:30So folks, you know what this means.
00:33We need to come together and spend every day for the next year working to educate our neighbors,
00:41reach out to them, and in order to give these Republicans the boot and replace them with
00:47brawling Democrats who will stand up for Colorado.
00:52But beyond elections, our task is to build community.
01:00Blog associations, volunteer groups, church groups, PTAs.
01:06Because community is the most powerful building block we have against fascism and to defeat
01:15authoritarianism and to root out corruption.
01:22So all of us here, we might all come from different places, but we share many of the
01:31same experiences.
01:33So to all those who came here today unsure of whether or not this is the place where
01:39you belong, I want to say that you do.
01:44You're welcome here in the past, no matter if you know all the right words to say, no
01:52matter your race, religion, gender identity, or status.
01:57No matter even if you disagree with me on a couple things.
02:02If you are willing to fight for someone you don't know, you are welcome here.
02:13If you are willing to fight for the working people of this country, regardless of who
02:18they are, how they identify, or where they come from, you are welcome here.
02:24It is very often what is valued.
02:27But I will say this.
02:30To those leaders on either side of the aisle who are willing to put their fellow Americans
02:37down so that they can get ahead or feel better about themselves, they may best find a home
02:43somewhere else.
02:47And if you're an LGBT kid or in family, we can't throw you under the bus in order to
02:53win an election.
02:59In this house, we stand together because here we know that together, without exception,
03:06is the only way that we can win.
03:10So I hope that you see that this movement is not about partisan labels or purity tests,
03:17but it's about class solidarity.
03:22It's for all of you who came here today to stand together and say our lives deserve dignity
03:28and our work deserves respect.
