00:00I'm not sure that it would be physically possible to come up with a worse public statement
00:04if you tried.
00:05Here's what Trump's Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, said on the All In podcast.
00:09Let's say Social Security didn't send out their checks this month.
00:15My mother-in-law, who's 94, she wouldn't call and complain.
00:20She just wouldn't.
00:21She thinks something got messed up and she'll get it next month.
00:25A fraudster always makes the loudest noise, screaming, yelling, and complaining.
00:33That seniors shouldn't call and complain if they stop getting their Social Security checks
00:37because it's the, quote, fraudsters who always make the loudest noise, screaming, and complaining.
00:41In other words, if you don't get your Social Security check because the Trump administration
00:45has made the conscious decision to gut the Social Security administration, then you better
00:50just shut your mouth because if you raise a stink about it, then clearly you're committing
00:54fraud.
00:55Let me ask everyone in my audience right now who receives Social Security benefits.
00:59If you stopped receiving your checks, what would you say if I told you that any complaints
01:03mean that you're a fraudster?
01:05Elizabeth Warren made that exact point as well, posting, Donald Trump's billionaire
01:09Commerce Secretary has financial advice for Americans.
01:11One, please buy Tesla stocks to help poor Elon Musk.
01:15Two, shut up and don't complain when you don't get your Social Security check.
01:19And to that exact point, it sure is easy for someone like Howard Lutnick to shame Social
01:24Security recipients when that guy is worth north of $2 billion.
01:28Don't you all see what's happening?
01:30Trump has assembled a cabinet with more billionaires than any other administration in the history
01:35of the United States of America, and these people instantly began attacking lifelines
01:40that working class Americans rely on.
01:43It was this administration that passed a budget blueprint that cut $880 billion from Medicaid,
01:48that cut $230 billion from food stamps, and now, which is seeking to cut 7,000 jobs to
01:55stay in compliance with Trump's executive order as far as the Social Security administration
01:59is concerned.
02:00And I want to be clear about what the goal is.
02:02It's not to outright eliminate Social Security, at least not right away.
02:06They're trying to cripple the agency from the inside so that they can do to Social Security
02:10what they do to every other government agency that they want to destroy, which is to ensure
02:15that it can't work, and then use that dysfunction that they created as a pretense to gut the
02:20agency.
02:21They're going to destroy the Social Security administration and then say, look, we told
02:24you that Social Security doesn't work.
02:26What choice do we have but to privatize it, meaning they don't even have to eliminate
02:30the Social Security administration.
02:32All they have to do is hobble it enough to give Republicans an excuse, a pretense to
02:37go all the way later on.
02:39It is a plan as insidious as it is transparent.
02:42And clearly, this plan is not working, considering even Republican voters in these town halls
02:47are showing that the issue is becoming more and more potent.
02:50This is at Chuck Grassley's town hall in that liberal bastion of Iowa.
02:54We're now seeing that we don't want people to call on the phone to change their direct
03:00deposit, go to a local office, try to get an appointment at a local office.
03:06Right now you're waiting a month and we're going to cut more staff?
03:10This is not right, if any, and we do not want to see Social Security privatized.
03:16I know.
03:17And I want to be clear about something here.
03:20The way that you know you can't trust Republicans as far as Social Security is concerned is
03:23because they are already doing the thing that they swore up and down they would never do,
03:28and that is to touch Medicaid.
03:29Again, the budget blueprint they all unanimously voted for prescribed $880 billion in cuts
03:35to the committee that funds that program.
03:37And of course, they're all saying that they didn't outright cut Medicaid, but that's actually
03:41a clever little ploy, because while they didn't cut Medicaid specifically, while they didn't
03:45cut it outright, they did prescribe cuts to the committee that funds Medicaid.
03:50And the only mathematical way to cut $880 billion to the Energy and Commerce Committee
03:55is to cut Medicaid.
03:57See how they're perfectly content to play games thinking that you're too stupid to know
04:00any better?
04:01If they'll do that to Medicaid, which is a crucial lifeline for over 70 million Americans,
04:07do you really think that they hold any earned benefit program sacred?
04:10Clearly not.
04:11And that's a point that AOC drove home in our recent interview.
04:15What Republicans say is, oh, these big budget cuts don't actually say the word Medicaid
04:20in it, so they aren't Medicaid cuts.
04:23But if I tell you 10 minus, what's 10 minus 4, and you say 6, I can just tell you I didn't
04:30say 6.
04:31Right.
04:32But they put the 10 minus 4 into the bill.
04:35By virtue of ascribing $880 billion in cuts to Energy and Commerce, and the only mathematical
04:40way for them to cut $880 billion is to focus on Medicaid.
04:43That's right.
04:44They're saying cut $880 billion from Energy and Commerce Committee.
04:46I sit on that committee.
04:49And Energy and Commerce, almost the entire budget that Energy and Commerce really explores
04:54is Medicaid and Medicare.
04:56There is no way that they can make their math square without enormous and devastating cuts
05:03to Medicaid.
05:04The sad reality is that to the GOP and to Trump's billionaire cabinet, this is all a
05:08game.
05:09These lifelines that Americans rely on, whether it's Medicaid, food stamps, Social Security,
05:13education funding, veterans programs, cancer research funding, and on and on, are dispensable
05:19to these billionaires because they don't need them.
05:21They don't rely on Social Security checks every month.
05:24They don't rely on Medicaid every month.
05:26In fact, the most insidious part is that they know full well that the people that they're
05:30targeting are the folks with the least amount of political power.
05:33Take Medicaid, for example.
05:34The folks on Medicaid are low income and children.
05:37Those are people who don't have a lot of political power.
05:39In other words, they are the easiest target.
05:42Republicans know that they want to cut health care, but they want to do so with minimal
05:45political consequences.
05:46And so in the same way that they target gay people and trans people and minorities and
05:51any other marginalized community, here they've decided that their easiest target is Medicaid
05:56recipients.
05:57And that's a point that I made during an interview on Zoteo.
05:59And I think what's even more depraved about this is they went after Medicaid but not Medicare.
06:05And that's because they made a political calculation that because the folks who are recipients
06:10of Medicare, those are seniors, are a more powerful voting block, that they wouldn't
06:15touch that.
06:16But that because Medicaid is composed of low income folks and children, that these are
06:22people who don't have political power.
06:25So their goal was to strip away health care from Americans, but they only wanted to do
06:29it when they can suffer the least amount of political consequence for that.
06:33And I think that that's the most depraved part because they pick and they decided to
06:40cherry pick where it would hurt them the least while they were purposefully searching out
06:44for the people who would have the least political power while they were looking to take their
06:47health care away in this country.
06:49The truth is that these people are already previewing what their priorities are.
06:53At best, they just have a fundamental disdain for working class Americans.
06:57But at worst, they're acting in a way that suggests that they aren't even vying for your
07:00votes at any point in the future.
07:02I mean, think about it.
07:03Touching earned benefits like Social Security is the third rail of American politics.
07:07You don't do it unless you want to get decimated at the ballot box in the upcoming election.
07:11The fact that Republicans are barreling ahead with a sense of full impunity right now suggests
07:16that perhaps they're not worried at all about the prospect of ever facing voters again.
07:20Now, I don't want to sound alarmist, but I really don't want to sound naive.
07:24We are in a constitutional crisis right now, and we ignore the risks that are staring us
07:28in the face at our own peril.
07:29I don't say this as a Democrat.
07:31I say this as an American.
07:33I say this as someone who has paid into earned benefit programs my whole life and who fully
07:37expects to take advantage of them when I'm older.
07:39I say this as someone whose parents and grandma get Social Security checks and certainly want
07:43to continue getting them.
07:45I say this as somebody who has enough empathy and compassion that I don't want to see anybody
07:49lose their lifelines, all because some billionaire like Elon Musk or Howard Lutnick or anybody
07:54else in Trump's cabinet has decided that federal money would be better spent on their own businesses.
07:59The fight of our time is not left-wing versus right-wing, it is the haves versus the have-nots.
08:05I will spend every day on this planet fighting, not for the people who already have everything
08:09they could ever need, but expressly for the people who don't.
08:12If that's a fight that you're willing to have, then I hope you'll all subscribe to this channel
08:16and fight alongside me.
08:19Before you go, first, if you enjoyed this content and you want to see more and support
08:23independent media, please subscribe to this channel.
08:26The subscribe button will be right here on the screen.
08:28But second, the reality is that we're now in a political environment where this administration
08:32can lean on any of the social media platforms to suppress certain voices if they don't like
08:36critical coverage.
08:37That means my longevity here is in the hands of a few tech billionaires who are already
08:41making it clear that they're willing to cater to this White House.
08:44To that end, signing up for my newsletter is a great way for me to be able to reach
08:48you directly if that ever becomes necessary.
08:50I'll put the link on the screen as well, so please sign up.
08:53It's completely free, but there's also an option to do a paid subscription if you'd
08:56like to support my work.
08:57I really appreciate it.
08:59Thanks so much for watching.
